Nifty 50 and the BSE SENSEX are Indian stock-market benchmarks, but they track different baskets on different exchanges. Nifty 50 contains 50 NSE-listed stocks; SENSEX selects 30 companies from an eligible BSE 100 universe. Both weight constituents by float-adjusted market value, so larger public floats can have more influence. The higher stock count does not, by itself, make Nifty 50 a more complete or better representation of the market.
What are Nifty 50 and Sensex?
Nifty 50 is an index maintained by NSE Indices that tracks 50 stocks listed on the National Stock Exchange of India. NSE Indices describes it as a diversified index representing important sectors of the economy. Its base period is the close on November 3, 1995, with a base value of 1,000.

The BSE SENSEX is a benchmark of 30 companies selected from an eligible BSE 100 universe, according to the BSE index methodology. The index names are often used as shorthand for the performance of their respective markets, but neither index contains every listed company.

| Feature | Nifty 50 | BSE SENSEX |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange universe | Stocks listed on NSE | Eligible companies from the BSE 100 universe |
| Number of constituents | 50 stocks | 30 companies |
| Market-cap coverage figure available here | 53.73% of the free-float market capitalization of NSE-listed stocks, as of March 30, 2026 (NSE Indices) | A comparable current percentage is not stated in the BSE methodology source |
| Weighting basis | Free-float market capitalization | Float-adjusted market capitalization |
The Nifty 50 coverage figure is specific to NSE-listed stocks and its stated date; it should not be treated as a current share of all Indian market capitalization. No comparable current SENSEX coverage percentage is established by the cited material. A 50-constituent index has 20 more constituents than a 30-constituent index, but constituent count alone does not show which better represents the market.
How are companies selected and weighted?
Weighting by eligible public float
Both indices use a float-adjusted approach rather than giving every company the same weight. In practical terms, companies with larger eligible public floats can exert more influence on index movements, subject to each index’s rules. NSE Indices says Nifty 50 has used free-float market-capitalization weighting since June 26, 2009; BSE’s methodology says SENSEX constituents are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization.
Because the methods are related but governed by separate index rules, the same company need not have the same weight in both benchmarks. For Nifty 50, NSE Indices’ investible weight factors explain the float factor applied in index calculations.

Different review and eligibility rules
BSE’s SENSEX methodology describes eligibility screens, six-month average float-adjusted and total market-cap rankings, trading-value screens, a minimum 0.5% weight screen, and rules covering both incumbent companies and new additions. Nifty 50 has its own review criteria; consult the applicable NSE Indices equity-index methodology for the rules in force at the time of a review. These separate screening processes mean that index membership is not simply a ranking of the 30 or 50 largest companies by headline market value.
Can you compare Nifty and Sensex returns directly?
Only compare like with like. The commonly quoted Nifty 50 is a price index, which reflects price changes but excludes dividends. NSE Indices also publishes the Nifty 50 Total Returns (TR) index, which includes dividends; it identifies the TR index as the appropriate benchmark for mutual funds that earn dividends. Ensure both sides of a return comparison are price indices or both are total-return indices.
Rank #3
The difference can matter over time. As a historical illustration—not a current performance comparison—the NSE Indices FAQ lists values on December 31, 2001 of 1,059.05 for Nifty 50 and 1,150.28 for Nifty 50 TR. Those figures show the effect of including dividends in that example, not how either index has performed recently.

- Exchange: Nifty 50 draws from NSE-listed stocks; SENSEX draws from an eligible BSE universe.
- Breadth by count: Nifty 50 includes 50 constituents, versus 30 for SENSEX, but more names do not automatically mean better market representation.
- Weighting: Both use float-adjusted market capitalization, so constituents do not contribute equally.
- Coverage: Nifty 50’s stated NSE free-float coverage was 53.73% on March 30, 2026; the cited material does not establish a comparable current SENSEX percentage.
- Overlap: The current number of companies shared by both indices is not established here, so it should not be guessed from older constituent lists.
For current membership or a current overlap calculation, use the latest official constituent files from NSE Indices and BSE and note their effective dates. Membership changes over time, so older third-party lists may not reflect the present baskets.
