To protect equipment when power returns, use a correctly sized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for essential devices that need temporary battery power, a suitable surge protective device for electronics that need spike protection only, and ask a qualified electrician about whole-home protection for broader coverage. A surge protector alone will not keep a router or computer running during an outage.
Why power restoration can put equipment at risk
Power returning after an outage can be associated with a voltage surge. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) warns that a surge when power returns can damage TVs, appliances, and heating and air-conditioning systems. That is a reason to plan protection in advance, not a guarantee that every outage will produce a damaging spike.

Surge protection and backup power address different problems: a surge protective device (SPD) helps protect compatible equipment from voltage spikes, while a UPS also supplies temporary battery power to the equipment connected to its battery-backed outlets.

| Option | What it does | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| UPS with surge protection | Provides temporary battery power to selected devices and can protect them from surges. | Choose by connected load, UPS watt and VA ratings, desired runtime, and outlet configuration. Runtime decreases as the connected load increases. |
| Plug-in surge protective device | Helps protect compatible plug-in electronics from voltage spikes. | Does not provide battery runtime. Follow the device’s instructions and use it only with compatible equipment. |
| Whole-home SPD | Can provide broader surge protection at the electrical service or distribution system, covering more circuits and appliances. | Requires assessment and installation by a qualified electrician; it should not be treated as protection against every electrical failure. |
| Home energy storage | May provide backup power to selected home loads, depending on system design. | This is a larger system than a small electronics UPS; capacity, transfer equipment, and installation depend on the system. |
How to choose and set up a UPS for a router and computer
- Decide what must stay on. List the router, modem, computer, and other essential equipment that need brief continuity or time for a controlled shutdown. Keeping the load focused helps reserve battery capacity for those devices.
- Check the load and ratings. Add the connected devices’ wattage, then select a UPS whose watt and VA ratings support that load. Schneider Electric advises choosing a VA rating higher than the total device watt load and leaving capacity for peaks. Check the exact model’s runtime information for the load you expect; do not assume a generic number of minutes.
- Use the right outlets. Connect equipment that needs backup to the UPS’s battery-backed outlets. Some units also have surge-only outlets, which do not provide battery power during an outage; confirm outlet labels and the manual.
- Follow the exact model’s connection instructions. Check whether the manufacturer permits a power strip or other distribution accessory. For APC Back-UPS and Smart-UPS families, Schneider Electric Canada advises plugging the UPS directly into a wall receptacle and not placing a surge protector, power strip, or extension cord at its input or output. That guidance is specific to those product families; check the instructions for your own UPS rather than assuming the rule applies universally.
Understand UPS power-conditioning differences
UPS designs vary in how they respond to power fluctuations. ENERGY STAR classifies them as voltage and frequency dependent (VFD, commonly standby or offline), voltage independent (VI, commonly line-interactive), and voltage and frequency independent (VFI, commonly online or double-conversion).
#1 Best Overall
- 【4+4 Outlets Power Strip with 4 USB Ports】- The 3-side power strip with 8AC widely outlets and 4 USB charging ports, each USB A port features 5V/2.4A Max output. USB C charging port features 5V/3A MAX. can power up to 12 devices simultaneously.
- 【Surge Protector Power Strip with 3 Side Design & Wide Space】- 3-side design that makes it easier to make the plugs not covering any outlet, and the 8 AC outlets with 1.8 inches long space in between, larger than standard 1.5-inch socket. Larger spacing makes it easier to use for all kinds of equipment. The compact design saves more space, suitable for the home, office, and college dorm room.
- 【Multi Safety Protection】- ETL Certificates. This power strip has overload protection, short-circuit protection, over current protection, over-voltage protection and overheating protection. The surge protector with overload protection protects your electrical appliances from lighting, surges or spikes. The minimum energy-absorbing capacity of 900 Joules. It will automatically cut power to protect connected devices when voltage surge is overwhelming.
- 【6 Ft extension cord with Flat Plug】- The 45° flat plug design prevents the bottom plug from clogging and allows for easy installation in tight spaces; the 6-foot power cord allows for flexibility, and two mounting holes on the back allow for secure installation of this power outlet in a variety of applications.
- 【 Our After Sale Service 】- ETL Certificates. Our friendly and reliable customer service will respond to you within 24 hours. You can purchase with confidence, with our 30-day return and 12-month warranty.
- VFD / standby: Provides outage backup but does not correct voltage fluctuations.
- VI / line-interactive: Adds voltage-correction functions.
- VFI / online: Continuously conditions power, isolating connected loads from voltage and frequency variations.
These categories describe design differences, not a requirement that every home use an online UPS. Choose based on the equipment, its power needs, and the exact product specifications.
What to do before, during, and after an outage
Before an outage
- Identify essential devices and check their power draw.
- Confirm the UPS has enough watt and VA capacity for the connected load and the runtime you need.
- Keep battery-backed outlets for devices that truly need to remain powered.
- Consider a suitable plug-in SPD for other electronics that do not need battery runtime.
- Ask a qualified electrician whether whole-home protection is appropriate for your home and local requirements.
During an outage
A UPS can keep connected critical equipment running temporarily. Save work and shut down safely rather than treating the battery as an unlimited power source.

When power returns
Remember that battery backup and surge protection are separate functions. If equipment shows signs of electrical damage, power remains abnormal, or you suspect a wiring fault, stop using affected equipment and consult a qualified professional or your utility as appropriate. Appliance and electrical-system reset procedures vary, so use the appliance’s instructions rather than relying on a universal reset sequence.

A plug-in strip protects only compatible equipment connected to it; it should not be assumed to protect hardwired appliances or every circuit. A whole-home SPD is a separate installation option for broader coverage. ESFI describes whole-home surge protection in its power-outage guidance and refers to the 2020 National Electrical Code; code adoption and requirements vary by jurisdiction, so ask a qualified electrician or local authority having jurisdiction what applies where you live.
