Qualifying sets the field and its starting positions; eliminations are the head-to-head tournament that determines the event winner. A strong qualifying position can shape an opening matchup and, in NHRA’s published 16-car professional bracket example, gives the higher qualifier first-round lane choice. It does not guarantee a win: racers must advance through eliminations to take the event.
What’s the difference between qualifying and eliminations in NHRA?
Qualifying consists of timed passes used to establish the competitors’ positions in the elimination field. Eliminations are the knockout rounds: racers compete head-to-head, the loser is out, and the winner advances until one racer remains.

NHRA describes the format in its NHRA 101 explainer as “a series of such two-vehicle, tournament-style eliminations.” The two stages therefore serve different purposes: qualifying helps determine where a racer enters the ladder, while elimination-round results decide who keeps racing.
How does NHRA qualifying work?
Racers make timed passes during qualifying sessions. The resulting qualifying positions are used to arrange the elimination field under the applicable category’s rules. NHRA’s sources do not establish one universal number of qualifying sessions or identical qualification rules for every class, so check the rules and schedule for the category and event you are following.

A pass is a standing-start run down a measured track. NHRA says the racer stages at the starting line and that elapsed time (E.T.) is measured from leaving the staging beams to reaching the finish. That time is distinct from a qualifying position: the position reflects how the racer stands in the field under the applicable event format.
How are NHRA elimination pairings determined?
NHRA’s 2026 NHRA Elimination Brackets guide illustrates a 16-car professional bracket. In its opening round, the highest qualifier faces the lowest qualifier, with the remaining racers paired inward:

| 1 | No. 1 vs. No. 16 |
| 2 | No. 2 vs. No. 15 |
| 3 | No. 3 vs. No. 14 |
| Continuing pattern | Next-highest remaining qualifier vs. next-lowest remaining qualifier |
This is the guide’s 16-car example, not a rule to assume for every NHRA category or series. A racer’s qualifying position determines the opening slot in this example; performance in each elimination round determines whether that racer advances.

In the same published 16-car bracket guide, the higher qualifiers—Nos. 1 through 8—choose their lane in the first round. After that, lane choice goes to the racer who recorded the quicker elapsed time in the previous round. Treat this as the lane-choice procedure described for that bracket example, rather than a universal rule for every class.

What happens during an elimination round?
Two racers stage in adjacent lanes and race to the finish. NHRA’s NHRA 101 explainer says, “When the racer rolls into the stage beam, the front tires are exactly on the starting line.” The staging lights show when vehicles are ready; the starter activates the Christmas Tree, the electronic starting device. Its lights provide the start sequence, which differs between Pro Tree and Sportsman Tree formats.
The elapsed time runs from leaving the staging beams to reaching the finish line. A foul start can also decide a round: NHRA’s glossary says a racer who foul-starts in eliminations is eliminated unless the opponent commits a worse infraction.

Do all NHRA classes race eliminations on Sunday?
No. The weekend schedule varies by event and category, and qualifying and eliminations can be interleaved. NHRA’s 2026 In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals Event Guide is one specific example, not a standard schedule for every event:

The schedule shows why “qualifying weekend” and “elimination Sunday” are not reliable descriptions of every category’s timetable. Consult the current event schedule for the specific class and date. NHRA notes that weather can delay, postpone, or reschedule an event.
