Those readings are not interchangeable. A wattage is meaningful only when you know what it measures and how it was collected.
What does a GPU power reading actually measure?
“GPU power” can mean power at the chip, power across the graphics card’s board inputs, or power reported for a PSU or whole system. A software metric is defined by the GPU, driver, and API; it is not automatically a direct measurement of every watt entering the card. An inline setup can measure power delivered through the paths it instruments. PSU telemetry usually describes the supply or platform unless the system explicitly provides GPU-specific attribution.

This distinction matters when comparing numbers. Two tools can both display watts yet cover different components, use different definitions, or report values with different timing and aggregation. Avoid treating the largest or most convenient reading as the definitive board-power figure.
Which approach fits your goal?
| Goal | Best-fitting approach | What to report |
|---|---|---|
| Quick live view while using a supported GPU | Vendor software telemetry | GPU model, vendor API or tool, metric name, and whether the value is chip, board, or another vendor-defined measure. |
| Compare GPU board input under a repeatable workload | Compatible inline interposer or measurement kit | Which PSU-cable and PCIe-slot paths are included, the setup, sampling and logging method, and workload. |
| Monitor a datacenter chassis or supply | Platform PSU or system-management telemetry | Platform, PSU identity, reported boundary, and whether GPU attribution is exposed. |
| Observe short-duration power dynamics | External instrumentation with documented sampling behavior | Instrument model and documented sampling limits; sampling capability alone does not establish accuracy. |
Software telemetry: easiest for routine monitoring
Software reads values exposed by the GPU and its driver stack. NVIDIA’s AIPerf documentation describes a local pynvml route that queries NVIDIA GPUs through the driver using the nvidia-ml-py library, and an AMD route using amdsmi. NVIDIA metrics appear in an nvidia_* namespace and AMD metrics in an amd_* namespace. A local NVIDIA setup using pynvml does not require a DCGM endpoint; DCGM infrastructure is a separate deployment choice. These implementation details do not make either route universally preferable.

AIPerf cautions that metric semantics are platform-specific. For NVIDIA-versus-AMD comparisons, identify the metric from each platform and validate its definition, workload, and collector behavior before comparing values. Do not assume two similarly named wattage metrics represent the same measurement.
AMD readings may be instantaneous or averaged
AMD ROCm SMI distinguishes current socket power, an instantaneous reading, from average power, and also documents an energy accumulator. The interface may return an unsupported status if the installed hardware or software does not support a requested function. For compatibility, its current-power interface attempts an instantaneous reading first and falls back to average power. Where the tool exposes which value it returned, report that distinction rather than describing every result as instantaneous power.

Vendor definitions and older documentation
NVIDIA’s GeForce GPU Power Primer distinguishes chip power from total-board power in its discussion of FrameView. Its account of the AMD value available through FrameView is dated and should not be treated as a verified description of the current release. The practical point remains: check the metric definition for the specific GPU and software version, especially before making a cross-vendor comparison.

An inline interposer sits in the power-delivery paths feeding a graphics card. NVIDIA’s primer explains that GPU power comes mostly from the PSU and partly through the PCIe slot; measuring only a PSU connector or only the slot can therefore omit part of the board’s input. A suitable measurement arrangement must cover the paths relevant to the card and state exactly which ones it includes.

NVIDIA names Cybenetics Powenetics as an example of an interposer used to measure power going to a GPU. The primer also notes that such setups can be complicated and expensive. That description is not a current price check, compatibility guarantee, or independent product test.
PowerSensor3 is a separate, open-hardware research system. Its authors’ 2025 paper describes a modular baseboard and sensor modules for real-time measurement of PCIe cards, including GPUs, and reports sampling rates up to 20 kHz for that toolkit. This is a sampling capability, not an accuracy guarantee and not a rate that should be attributed to other meters.

PSU telemetry: useful for supply and system operations
NVIDIA’s System Management User Guide, Release 24.03, documents a chassis power-monitoring policy and PSU identifiers for datacenter systems. That establishes PSU monitoring as a system-management function, but it does not establish that a particular PSU reading isolates the power consumed by one GPU.
Recommended Free Tools
Use PSU telemetry when the operational question concerns the supply or system. Treat it as GPU-specific only when the platform documentation explicitly defines and exposes a GPU-attributed value. A generic wall meter likewise measures at a different boundary and is not a substitute for GPU-only board-input measurement.

How to make a useful comparison
- Define the quantity. Decide whether you need chip telemetry, board input, energy over a workload, or PSU/system power.
- Confirm support and metric meaning. Record the GPU model, vendor, driver/tool stack, API metric name, and whether the function is supported on that configuration.
- Match the measurement boundary. For an interposer, document whether both PSU cabling and PCIe slot power are included. For PSU telemetry, establish whether the reported value is supply-level or GPU-attributed.
- Document timing and collection. State the sampling interval or aggregation behavior, logging/export method, and any relevant fallback from instantaneous to average values.
- Repeat the workload consistently. Use the same workload and collection procedure for each run, and describe them so readers can interpret the numbers.
There is no robust, comparable accuracy percentage established across current consumer GPU software telemetry, inline meters, and PSU telemetry. The available documentation therefore does not support a universal accuracy ranking across those categories. Compare their measurement boundary, hardware support, metric definition, sampling and aggregation, logging, deployment complexity, and intended use instead.
