1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGAA measures goals allowed per 60 minutes, save percentage measures the share of shots a goalie stops, and a shutout records a game in which the opponent scores no goals. Each describes a different part of a result; none is a complete measure of a goalie’s individual ability on its own.
What does GAA mean in hockey?
Goals-against average (GAA) expresses how many goals a goalie allows per 60 minutes of playing time. The NHL formula is goals allowed multiplied by 60, divided by minutes played: GAA = GA × 60 ÷ MIN. The NHL defines it as: “Multiply goals allowed (GA) by 60 and divide by minutes played (MIN).” National Hockey League, “Goals-Against Average”.

For example, a goalie who allows two goals in 60 minutes has a 2.00 GAA. If the goalie allows two goals in 30 minutes, the calculation is 2 × 60 ÷ 30, or 4.00. The rate adjusts for playing time, but it does not adjust for how many shots the goalie faced or how dangerous those chances were.
How is goalie save percentage calculated?
Save percentage (SV%) is saves divided by shots faced: SV% = saves ÷ shots faced. The NHL’s glossary states: “Save percentage is determined by dividing saves by shots faced.” National Hockey League, “Save Percentage”.

It is usually displayed as a decimal. A .900 SV% means the goalie stopped 90% of recorded shots on goal. Unlike GAA, SV% uses shots faced as its denominator, rather than minutes played. It still does not show the difficulty or circumstances of those shots.
What counts as a shutout in the NHL?
A shutout means the opposing club scores no goals. The team earns the shutout result, but individual credit follows a specific rule: if two goalies combine for a shutout, neither receives an individual shutout. The NHL records a club shutout instead. National Hockey League, “Shutout”.

That makes shutouts different from GAA and SV%: they are a discrete game outcome, not a rate. A goalie’s shutout total can depend on the team allowing zero goals and on whether one goalie or multiple goalies played.

How should you compare GAA, SV%, and shutouts?
Use the same season and competition, and check how much each goalie played and whether their role was primarily starter or relief. Then read GAA and SV% together: GAA puts goals allowed in relation to time, while SV% puts saves in relation to shots faced. Neither isolates goalie skill from the team and the circumstances of play. NHL coverage of traditional measures notes that shot circumstances matter when interpreting performance. Seattle Kraken, Alison Lukan, 2021.

- Shutouts: games in which the opponent scores zero; this total depends partly on team outcomes and the NHL’s individual-credit rule.
Where available, shot-context measures can add information about the chances faced. In Colorado’s 2025-26 regular season, Scott Wedgewood recorded a .921 SV%, a 2.02 GAA, and four shutouts among goalies with at least 25 games played, according to the Colorado Avalanche’s June 25, 2026 recap. Colorado Avalanche, June 25, 2026. These figures illustrate how the three statistics can describe one season from different angles; they are not universal thresholds for a good or poor goalie season.
