A bank’s climate pledge can shape its lending and investment policies, sector targets and engagement with business customers. It does not, by itself, mean your ordinary deposits are earmarked for climate projects, that you will be refused a loan, or that investments in your own account are greener. The effect depends on the bank, product, jurisdiction and details of the commitment.
What a bank climate pledge covers
“Net zero” can refer to a bank’s own operations, the emissions associated with its financing, or both. These are different boundaries, and a target for one does not automatically cover the other.

Operational emissions
These come from the bank’s own activities, such as its buildings, energy use and business travel. A reduction in operational emissions says something about the institution’s footprint, not necessarily about the companies it finances.

Financed emissions
These are emissions associated with a bank’s lending and investment activities and the counterparties they finance. The Bank of England’s 2025 climate-related financial disclosure describes lending-related emissions as banks’ Scope 3 financed emissions and warns that disclosure quality, coverage and comparability remain limited.

For a bank-specific example, HSBC reports operational and financed emissions separately and says it revised its transition plan in November 2025. Its sustainability FAQ says HSBC provided and facilitated $102 billion in sustainable finance and investment in 2025, bringing its cumulative total to $496 billion since January 2020; the bank says it remains on track for its stated 2030 targets of $750 billion and $1 trillion. What it can mean for your deposits
A general net-zero pledge does not establish that money in a standard current or savings account is ring-fenced for renewable energy or another named project. Do not assume your particular deposit has been used for a particular purpose unless the account’s terms and reporting say so.
A bank may offer a distinct green deposit product with specific allocation and reporting rules. Check the named product’s documentation and the rules that apply where you live. What it can mean for loans
A climate plan may influence which sectors a bank is willing to finance, how it assesses borrowers, what engagement it expects from business customers, or whether it offers a labelled green or transition loan. But a broad pledge alone cannot tell you whether you qualify for a mortgage or other personal loan, what rate you will be offered, or whether the bank will stop serving an entire industry. Those answers depend on the lender’s current policy and product terms in your jurisdiction.
Climate commitments do not necessarily mean withdrawing finance from every emissions-intensive company. A bank may instead finance a credible effort to reduce emissions, such as investment in cleaner technology. The European Commission describes transition finance as supporting investments that reduce current greenhouse-gas emissions or other environmental impacts as an economy changes over time. Why a bank’s emissions figure can rise while it finances a transition
Financing a high-emitting customer’s transition can increase a bank’s measured financed emissions in the short term, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors. The Bank for International Settlements explains that this can happen even when financing supports cleaner technology and a borrower’s effort to change. A falling portfolio emissions metric and real-world decarbonisation are therefore not always the same thing. BIS speech on transition finance

That is why targets need context: the bank’s methods, sector coverage, customer transition plans and reported progress all matter. The BIS discussion explains the challenge; it is not evidence that every bank’s approach is effective.

A bank’s own lending or investment targets do not establish the climate characteristics of a fund, bond or managed portfolio you own. If you are assessing a specific investment product, examine its mandate, underlying holdings, benchmark, exclusions, stewardship approach, emissions measures and reporting period.
ISO 32212:2026 treats transition planning as part of a financial institution’s wider strategy, including lending and investment policies and engagement with clients. It addresses institutional planning and support for real-economy emissions reduction and adaptation; it does not certify the climate characteristics of a particular customer’s holdings. How to compare a bank’s pledge with a product you might use
Compare the implementation, not just the net-zero slogan. For the account, loan or investment that matters to you, check the relevant product documents as well as the bank’s dated climate disclosures.
- Boundary: Does the target cover the bank’s operations, lending, investments, underwriting or other activities?
- Target design: What are the baseline and target years? Does the bank use absolute emissions, emissions intensity or another metric, and are there intermediate targets?
- Sector policy: Which sectors are covered? What does the policy say about new finance, existing customers, exceptions and phase-outs?
- Transition approach: Does the bank describe how it engages customers and evaluates measurable transition plans, including in hard-to-abate sectors?
- Evidence and progress: Are activity and emissions figures dated, with disclosed methods, coverage, revisions and independent assurance where available? Scope 3 disclosure quality, coverage and comparability can be limited, so two banks’ headline numbers may not be directly comparable.
- Product terms: For a deposit, look for allocation and reporting rules; for a loan, eligibility, rate and covenants; for an investment, the mandate and holdings.
A historical example of a framework is the voluntary Net-Zero Banking Alliance examined in an ECB working paper: the paper describes member banks as required to set financed-emissions targets for credit and investment portfolios, initially in priority sectors and then across all or a substantial majority of specified sectors. That description is not proof of any named bank’s current membership or performance. ECB working paper on bank climate targets

HSBC, for example, reported that as of the end of 2024 its financed emissions were down 38% for oil and gas, 18% for power and utilities, and 94% for thermal-coal mining versus the respective baselines. HSBC also reported a reduction of more than 80% in its operational emissions—Scope 1, Scope 2 and business travel—since 2019, and said around 4,000 corporate customers’ transition plans informed its 2025 plan update.
