A black screen does not point to one definite cause. Find where the picture disappears: check the encoder’s source, the video entering and leaving the NGINX RTMP relay, then YouTube’s Live Control Room. After locating the failing stage, verify the destination URL and stream key, outgoing path, video codec, keyframe interval and bitrate. A connected stream is not proof that YouTube is receiving visible video.
Trace the picture from source to YouTube
Check each stage in order before changing settings. A visible picture before the relay but not after it narrows the problem to the relay or its forwarding path; a black picture at the source means the cause is upstream of NGINX. This is a diagnostic approach, not a guarantee that any one stage is at fault.

- Check the encoder’s local preview or source monitor. Confirm it shows moving video. If it is black, check the camera, screen-capture source, selected scene or encoder input first.
- Inspect the relay input and output separately if your setup allows it. Compare what reaches NGINX with what it forwards toward YouTube. If the input is visible but the output is black, investigate the relay configuration, forwarding path or any encoding step between them. The appropriate inspection method depends on your deployment.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room while publishing. Check stream health and any displayed errors. A successful connection alone does not establish that valid video is reaching YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube encoder settings and live-streaming guidance).
Verify the YouTube destination and relay path
Check that the relay is targeting the current YouTube ingest URL and the intended stream key, and that the NGINX RTMP application and path forward the publisher’s stream to that destination. YouTube’s ingestion configuration distinguishes stream URLs and keys (YouTube Live Streams API documentation).

Check the video format and encoder settings
Confirm what the encoder actually sends; do not assume that an RTMP connection means the video is encoded in a format YouTube can use. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs, and AAC or MP3 as supported audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. See its current encoder guidance for applicable settings.
Match bitrate to the actual stream
Use YouTube’s published bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate rather than applying a single target to every stream. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 10 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. Its table also lists 14 Mbps as a recommended value for that combination under a separate setting; consult the current table and its labels before choosing a value. These figures are not a diagnosis of a black screen and should not be generalized to other codecs or video modes.

Test before going live
YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room. If the test picture is black, repeat the source-to-relay-to-YouTube checks and change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell what affected the result.
What the NGINX documentation does—and does not—establish
NGINX documents its RTMP dynamic module as enabling RTMP, HLS and DASH streaming formats. Its cited guide covers NGINX Plus package installation; it does not provide universal configuration instructions for every third-party RTMP module or deployment (NGINX Plus RTMP dynamic module guide). The exact module, version, operating system and configuration matter, so a directive or command that works for one setup may not apply to another.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
A black screen by itself does not establish a copyright problem. Separately, make sure you have the rights to stream the video, music and other material in your broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and encoder guidance and applicable platform rules before broadcasting. Technical troubleshooting cannot determine whether content is permitted or eligible for monetization; follow YouTube’s own notices and policies for those questions.
