To send a stream through an Nginx RTMP relay to YouTube, get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Create > Go Live > Stream settings, then configure your encoder to publish to Nginx and configure Nginx to relay to YouTube. Treat the key like a password. Before using the setup for an event, verify that your particular Nginx RTMP build can connect to YouTube over RTMPS: YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingest, and support for RTMPS output is not established for every Nginx RTMP installation.
Before you configure Nginx
Confirm that the channel is eligible to stream and that the server and encoder can use compatible protocols. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its getting-started guidance sets the minimum age at 16. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before an event. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance.

- Identify which Nginx variant and RTMP module are installed. The third-party nginx-rtmp-module and the NGINX Plus RTMP module have different installation and module-loading instructions.
- Check the documentation for the exact deployed module version for its application and push-relay directives. Do not assume a configuration copied from another build will work unchanged.
- Plan for RTMPS output to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the cited nginx-rtmp-module project documentation describes RTMP relay and does not establish that all builds can make RTMPS client connections.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS and provides an RTMPS ingest URL in Live Control Room. If your Nginx build cannot connect to that endpoint securely, use a compatible TLS-capable relay path rather than silently downgrading to plain RTMP. Find the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, click Create > Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab. Create a stream if needed, or select an existing one. YouTube may load previous stream settings; you can also create a custom stream key for reuse.
- Copy the stream URL and the matching stream key shown in the stream settings. Use the URL as the destination server/endpoint and the key in the stream-key field of the relay configuration. The exact endpoint shown in your Live Control Room should control your setup.
YouTube calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Never publish a real key in documentation or screenshots, commit it to source control, or leave it in unsecured logs. If you believe it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update the relay with the new key afterward. See YouTube’s stream settings and key guidance.

Configure Nginx as a relay
Nginx RTMP is the relay component, not the place where you retrieve a YouTube key. The usual arrangement is for an encoder to publish to an Nginx RTMP application, which then pushes the incoming stream to YouTube. The module supports live publishing and push/pull relay models, but the precise directive syntax and protocol support depend on the module and build in use.
- Configure an RTMP application on the Nginx server to accept the encoder’s incoming publishing connection.
- In the encoder, set the destination to the Nginx server and application, and provide the publishing name/key expected by that application.
- Configure the application’s remote push destination using the YouTube stream URL and the matching YouTube key, following the push syntax documented for your installed module version.
- Confirm that the Nginx process can reach the YouTube ingest endpoint and that the chosen endpoint uses the protocol your build supports. For RTMPS, verify TLS client support for that exact build and environment.
- Protect the configuration and any logs that might contain credentials. Restrict access to the server and rotate the YouTube key if it is disclosed.
The project’s module documentation describes application blocks and remote push behavior, but it does not validate one universal configuration or RTMPS support across all installations. For NGINX Plus, follow the separate NGINX Plus RTMP module instructions for package installation, module loading, configuration testing, and reloads. Do not apply one variant’s installation steps to the other without checking its documentation.

Choose encoder settings and test the stream
Set the encoder for a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to your production and available upload bandwidth. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations include RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. Bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the relevant row in YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table instead of carrying one bitrate across formats.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom rather than using all available upload bandwidth.
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream ahead of the event. Check that the encoder publishes to Nginx and that Nginx forwards the feed to the selected YouTube endpoint.
- Open Live Control Room and check the incoming preview and stream health before making the stream public. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview, then click Go live in Studio when ready.

Troubleshoot common connection failures
YouTube receives no video
- Check the source-to-relay leg: confirm the encoder is publishing to the correct Nginx server and application, and that the application is accepting the publish connection.
- Check the relay-to-YouTube leg: verify the endpoint and key copied from the selected Studio stream, and inspect Nginx and encoder logs without exposing credentials.
The relay cannot connect to the YouTube endpoint
- Confirm whether the configured URL is RTMP or RTMPS and whether the installed module build supports that outbound protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS; do not assume an RTMP relay module automatically supports an RTMPS client connection.
- Check server network access to the endpoint and use a compatible TLS-capable path if the build cannot connect securely.
The key is rejected
- Make sure the key belongs to the stream selected in Live Control Room and was copied without extra characters.
- If the key was reset or exposed, replace it in the Nginx destination configuration and protect the updated credential.
The preview is unstable or quality degrades
- Check stream health in Live Control Room and compare encoder settings with YouTube’s current recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Test upload bandwidth and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. A setting that consumes the connection’s full upload capacity can leave insufficient room for stable delivery.
