If your Nginx RTMP stream reaches YouTube but has no sound, trace the audio track through the full path: source → encoder → Nginx/FFmpeg relay → YouTube ingest → playback. Find the first hop with no audio and fix that point; Nginx cannot forward a track that the encoder never sent. Then test again and check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
1. Check that the source and encoder have audio
Confirm the source
Play the source locally. Check that the correct application or operating-system input is selected, the device is not muted, the input has permission to be used, and the intended channel is assigned. If the source itself is silent, fix its selection or capture settings before changing Nginx.

Confirm the encoder output
Use the encoder’s output status or a local monitoring copy to verify that an audio track exists and its level moves when sound is produced. If the encoder output has no track, the fault is at capture or encoding—not in the relay. If audio is present there, continue to the next hop.
2. Check Nginx RTMP and any FFmpeg relay
Inspect the active Nginx RTMP application block and any related exec, exec_push, or FFmpeg command. Follow the actual stream path rather than assuming that a configuration example matches your setup.

- Confirm the FFmpeg input points to the intended local RTMP stream.
- Check that audio has not been disabled with
-an. - For an output with explicit stream mapping, confirm the intended audio stream is mapped as well as video.
- Check that audio output is enabled and uses a codec YouTube accepts.
- If passing audio through without re-encoding, make sure the incoming codec and container combination is compatible with the next hop. Otherwise, configure audio encoding.
- If transcoding, verify the installed FFmpeg build supports the requested encoder and review its runtime logs for audio mapping or encoder errors.
The nginx-rtmp documentation includes FFmpeg examples that explicitly encode both audio and video; they illustrate what to check, but are not evidence of your own command’s behavior. Adapt syntax to your command and installed FFmpeg build. nginx-rtmp module documentation.
3. Compare the outgoing audio with YouTube’s settings
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance accepts AAC or MP3. For ordinary stereo, its recommended settings are a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. These are recommendations, not proof that any deviation causes silence. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026.

| Audio format | YouTube guidance for RTMP/RTMPS |
|---|---|
| Stereo | AAC or MP3; recommended 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps |
| 5.1 surround | AAC only; recommended 48 kHz and 384 Kbps |
If your stream is 5.1, check the codec as well as the bitrate and sample rate: YouTube says RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only for AAC. Use the configuration appropriate to your audio; do not change unrelated video settings when the evidence points to a missing audio track.
4. Check YouTube’s ingest health
Run a controlled test stream and open YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual event, then monitoring stream health. A health message can help distinguish an ingest-side audio problem from a fault earlier in your pipeline.

If you use the YouTube Live Streaming API, inspect the LiveStreams resource’s status.streamStatus, status.healthStatus, and reported configuration issues. The API documents issue categories that include audio bitrate problems; act on the specific reported issue rather than guessing. YouTube LiveStreams resource.
5. Distinguish an ingest issue from silent playback
If YouTube indicates that audio is present and healthy but a particular player is silent, test another browser or device. Check the player’s mute state, volume, and selected audio track. If the health display instead reports absent or misconfigured audio, return to the earliest pipeline hop where the track is missing. A silent player alone does not establish that Nginx caused the problem.

6. Check RTMPS transport only if there are connection errors
An RTMPS endpoint or connection problem is more likely to prevent or disrupt ingest than to explain a stream with video but no audio. If logs show transport errors, verify the endpoint, port, and SNI hostname against YouTube’s current guide. YouTube specifies port 443 for the ingestion server.
