What do free and strong safeties have in common?
Both are defensive backs in the secondary. NFL Football Operations describes safeties as players who defend the pass, support the run and may sometimes rush into the offensive backfield. The NFL says they line up about 10–15 yards from the line of scrimmage, though their actual alignment depends on the defense’s call and the offensive formation. How does a free safety differ?
A free safety usually aligns farther from the line of scrimmage and follows the ball, reacting to the quarterback. From that deeper position, the player can help cover a receiver over the top or provide extra coverage support for a cornerback. How does a strong safety differ?

Free safety vs. strong safety at a glance

Why the distinction can change from play to play
“Free” and “strong” describe typical responsibilities and alignment tendencies rather than a safety’s permanent spot on the field. A defense’s call and the offensive formation can change where either player lines up and what the player is asked to do. In practical terms, think “deeper coverage help” for the free safety and “closer to the tight end, with run support” for the strong safety, while allowing for exceptions.
