What does Geertruida’s versatility mean for cover?
Before the Manchester United match, head coach Régis Le Bris described Geertruida as versatile and said he could play in midfield, at left-sided centre-back or at right-back. Le Bris also said Sunderland had used different options during the season. That supports viewing Geertruida as a flexible squad option, but it does not prove he played all those roles while covering for Ballard or establish a particular formation for the United match. - August 2025: After Ballard was forced off against Burnley, Le Bris said the injury was “not too serious” and forecast an absence of two to three weeks. This was an estimate for that episode, not a present-day availability update. Sunderland AFC reported the comment on 26 August 2025.
- April 2026: Ahead of the Tottenham match, Le Bris said Ballard was close to returning from a hamstring issue but that the fixture would probably come too soon. That update applied to that match only. Tottenham Hotspur published the team news on 10 April 2026.
Is there a confirmed replacement for the 2026/27 season?
