NextDNS vs Control D: What Changes When You Switch, and How to Decide

Switching from NextDNS to Control D is a configuration change, not a hardware purchase. Here is how the two DNS filtering services compare on filtering, profiles, logs and deployment, and what to verify before you move.

Moving from NextDNS to Control D is a change to the DNS settings on your devices or router, and it requires no new hardware. Whether it is the right move depends on four things: the filtering and controls you rely on, how you group devices into profiles, how much query history you need to keep, and how DNS is deployed in your home. This guide walks through each one so you can test the switch on your own network instead of taking a verdict on trust.

The headline is a personal conclusion, and nothing here measures speed, reliability or privacy for either service. What follows is what each provider documents, where the sources are secondary or plan-specific, and what to check before you cut over.

What you are actually switching

NextDNS and Control D are both configurable DNS filtering services. Your devices send name lookups to the provider instead of your internet service provider, and the provider decides which lookups to block, allow or redirect based on the settings in your account. Because the change happens at the DNS layer, it can be reversed by pointing the same devices back to the old service.

DNS filtering also has limits. It can block domains that are known to serve ads, trackers, malware or unwanted content, but it cannot inspect traffic that never performs a DNS lookup, such as a hard-coded address inside an app. Treat any filter as a reduction in exposure rather than a guarantee that ads, malware or tracking are fully blocked.

How the two services compare on the documented points

The table below separates what the providers state directly from what comes from a secondary comparison. Where a value is not stated in the sources reviewed, the cell says so.

Area NextDNS Control D
Filtering categories The official service homepage lists security threat blocking, ad and tracker blocking, parental controls, analytics and logs. Not stated in the official business pricing page reviewed. The business plans list rules, profiles and analytics as features.
Traffic redirection Not stated in the sources reviewed. Described as a feature in a secondary comparison by Dnsium, published August 22, 2026. Confirm against Control D’s current documentation.
Per-device profiles Profiles are described in the NextDNS help center community thread, which is lower-confidence than official documentation. The CLI requires a profile ID for setup. Per-device profiles are described in the Dnsium comparison. Official personal-plan documentation was not verified.
Free tier Described as emphasized by the Dnsium comparison. Exact free-tier limits were not verified from official pages. Not stated. Personal-plan terms were not verified from official pages.
Query logs The NextDNS API supports log queries filtered by date bounds, device, status and search terms. On the business plans shown on the official pricing page (accessed October 8, 2026), raw query data is kept for 30 days and analytics for up to one year. These figures apply to business plans only.
Deployment options The NextDNS project wiki on GitHub describes an optional CLI that acts as a DNS53-to-DoH proxy with local caching and can run on a single host or at router level. Not stated in the sources reviewed.

The gaps matter. The most useful comparison of personal plans, free-tier limits and privacy policies has to come from each provider’s own plan and policy pages, which were not available as a complete set when this guide was prepared.

The four questions that decide the switch

1. Which filtering and controls do you actually use?

List the controls you turn on today: security blocking, ad and tracker blocking, parental controls, custom allow and deny rules, and any redirection you depend on. Check each one against both services’ current feature pages. A feature that appears in a secondary comparison but not in the provider’s own documentation should be verified before you rely on it.

2. How do you group devices?

If you apply one policy to the whole household, profiles matter less. If you apply different rules to a child’s tablet, a work laptop and a smart TV, confirm how each service identifies a device. Write down the device list and the policy each one needs before you start, because re-creating profiles on the other service is the step most likely to be skipped and later noticed.

  • Interfaces and deployment: 2.5Gb and 1Gb Ethernet with SFP or SFP+ fiber for clean aggregation and segmented backhaul at the edge.
  • Performance and scale: UTM up to 710 Mbps with inspection on; flexible VPN topologies for hub and spoke or mesh designs.

3. How much query history do you need?

Query logs are useful for troubleshooting, such as finding out which domain a blocked app tried to reach. They are also data you hold about your household. Decide how long you need to keep them and whether you need filtering by device or status. The NextDNS API documents those filters. Control D’s published business retention figures (30 days of raw queries, up to one year of analytics) apply to business plans, so do not assume the same retention on a personal plan without checking.

4. Where will DNS be set?

There are three common layers: each device, a client running on a host machine, or the router. Setting DNS on the router covers every device that connects through it, but it also means devices that bypass the router’s DNS setting, such as those on a VPN or with hard-coded resolvers, will not be filtered. Confirm that your router allows you to change its DNS server and that your devices use it.

How to make the change without losing coverage

Use this order so you always have a working path.

  1. Record your current setup: the DNS server on each device or on the router, the profile or policy names, and any allow or deny rules you have added.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Create the new account and profile on Control D, and recreate the same rules. If you use NextDNS’s CLI, note the profile ID it uses so you can remove it cleanly later.

  3. Change DNS on one device first, such as a laptop you use often. Load a few sites and check that they resolve and that the filters behave as expected.

  4. Move the remaining devices in groups. If you deploy at the router, do this last, because a mistake there affects every device on the network.

  5. Keep the previous service active until every device has been tested and you have confirmed the logs you need are available.

  • A site fails to load on one device only. That device may still use the old DNS server or a cached address. Check its DNS setting, then restart its network connection.

  • A site fails on every device. Check the new service’s blocking rules first, because a broad category or a stale allow rule is a more likely cause than a provider outage.

  • Devices ignore the router’s DNS setting. Some devices use their own encrypted DNS settings or a VPN. Turn those off for testing, or accept that those devices sit outside the filter.

  • Logs do not show the device you expected. Confirm the device is using the new profile, since traffic is attributed to the profile it resolves through.

Price, plans and speed

Personal-plan prices, free-tier limits and any differences in filtering reliability were not verified from current official pages for this guide. Check both providers’ plan pages on the day you decide, because limits change.

No speed or reliability comparison supports one service over the other here. If you test latency yourself, record the location of your connection, the resolver setting used, the number of lookups and the time of day. A few lookups from one location are not enough to show a difference that will hold on your network.

The Bottom Line

Switch only after you have listed your filters, device groups, log needs and deployment layer, and confirmed each one on the provider’s current plan page. If those match what Control D offers on the plan you would use, moving to it is a reversible change that you can test device by device.
