Spotify can surface an automatic offline cache on the Android Auto Home screen. YouTube Music plays songs you have deliberately downloaded, and on Android it can also play audio files already stored on the phone. Amazon Music’s offline downloads are limited to its own app, and the official help documentation does not establish how they behave in Android Auto without a connection.
This comparison is built from each service’s official help and feature pages, not from a side-by-side road test. Where a claim depends on how a particular app behaves in the car, we say so. Plan names, limits, and interface labels change, and the Amazon help page cited below is hosted on Amazon’s UK domain, so check its tier details against your own market.

How the three apps reach Android Auto
Android Auto does not have its own music library. It plays media through compatible apps that you have installed and signed into on the phone. Google’s Android Auto media help says the app must be compatible and the user must be signed in, and it gives voice-command examples for Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music, such as “Play [song name] on Amazon Music”. Google’s Android Auto media guidance covers this general requirement.
For YouTube Music, Google says to sign in to the app and then open the Music tab in Android Auto. If the app shows an error, Google recommends checking that you are signed in first. YouTube Music’s Android Auto help page describes these steps.

Spotify lists Android Auto among the ways to connect the service to a car. Its car guidance recommends setting up Spotify before you drive and not interacting with the phone while the car is moving. Spotify’s in-car support page sets out those recommendations.
Offline availability at a glance
The three services use different offline models. The table separates what you choose to download from what the app keeps automatically, because that difference decides whether music is ready when the car has no signal.

YouTube Music: planned downloads and local files
Downloads for Premium members
YouTube Music Premium members can download songs, videos, and podcasts to a mobile device. Some podcasts have separate availability exceptions. Google says the phone must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads available, which means a car that sits unused for a month may need a quick reconnect beforehand. Smart Downloads choose content from your listening history, and playlists can refresh in the background over Wi-Fi. YouTube Music’s offline downloads help sets out these rules.
Device files on Android
On Android, YouTube Music can display and play audio files already saved on the phone, including when there is no connection. Google’s limit is that device files cannot be mixed into playlists that contain streaming songs. A playlist can hold device files only, or it can hold streaming songs only. YouTube Music’s Android help page documents this behaviour. The sources do not confirm that a device-file playlist appears in the car exactly as it does on the phone, so test it with your own car before a long trip.

Spotify: Offline Backup and downloads
Offline Backup in the car
Spotify’s Offline Backup is the most car-friendly offline feature in this group, because it does not require you to pick anything. Spotify says it contains music that can play offline without a separate user download. It works only when Offline listening is turned on and the songs are present in the phone’s cache. When the phone is offline, it appears on the Spotify Home screen in Android Auto. Spotify’s Offline Backup support page describes the requirements.
Spotify does not guarantee that your whole library is available. The support page lists these reasons Offline Backup may not appear:
- Not enough recent listening to build a cache
- Low storage on the phone
- A cleared cache
- A reinstalled Spotify app
Premium downloads
Spotify Premium also lets you download music, albums, and playlists. Spotify’s US Premium offline-downloads page says you can download up to 10,000 songs per device and keep downloads on up to five devices. That figure is Spotify’s own published claim for an undated page, not an independent measurement, and limits and plan terms can change. The same page says downloads need an internet connection at least once every 30 days. Spotify’s offline downloads feature page carries these numbers.
Amazon Music: tier-dependent downloads that stay in the app
Amazon’s offline help page says Prime subscribers can download All-Access Playlists for offline listening. Standard and Unlimited subscribers can download songs, albums, and playlists, and the page names Standard, HD, Ultra HD, and Spatial Audio formats. Downloaded subscription songs and All-Access Playlist songs can only be played inside the Amazon Music app. Amazon says they cannot be exported to other apps or devices, copied to CDs, or moved to external storage. Amazon’s offline downloads help page sets out these tiers. Because that page is on the UK domain, check the tier names and entitlements for your country.

Google’s Android Auto guidance confirms that Amazon Music can be used through voice commands, but it does not confirm that tracks downloaded for offline subscription listening play from Android Auto with no network. Treat in-car offline playback for Amazon Music as unverified until Amazon documents it.

The decision depends on what you want to be ready when the car has no signal.
- You want music to work without choosing anything: Spotify Premium, because Offline Backup plays from the cache without a separate download, provided you listen regularly and keep storage free.
- You want to choose exactly what plays offline: YouTube Music Premium, with deliberate downloads. Remember the 30-day reconnect rule.
- You already have a music library on the phone: YouTube Music on Android can play those device files offline, but you cannot mix them with streaming songs in one playlist.
- You are already an Amazon Music subscriber: Use it for streaming in the car. Prime’s All-Access Playlist downloads and Standard or Unlimited downloads stay inside the app and cannot be moved elsewhere. Check the in-car offline behaviour yourself before relying on it.
If Spotify’s offline music does not appear in the car
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm you are on Spotify Premium, and that Offline listening is turned on in Spotify’s settings.
- Listen to music while online for a while, so the cache has songs to store.
- Free up storage on the phone, since low space is a listed reason the cache may not appear.
- Update the Spotify app and Android Auto, as Spotify’s support page recommends when troubleshooting.
- If the cache was cleared or the app was reinstalled, allow time for it to rebuild by listening again while online.
What the sources do not settle
The official documents describe features and rules. They do not compare sound quality, interface usability, or reliability across these apps in a car, and they do not identify a single offline-first player that suits every reader. The local-file route on YouTube Music is documented, but a dedicated Android music-player app that works with Android Auto is a separate choice that this article does not verify. If you want to know which app sounds or feels best in your own vehicle, that comparison needs to be run with your own phone, car, and subscription.
