One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a budget-conscious Next.js SaaS, compare logging options by the amount of data you ingest, how long you retain it, and how often you query it—not by the advertised starting price alone. Better Stack and Axiom are hosted logging platforms with documented Next.js integrations; Pino is a structured logger library that needs a separate destination and search system. OpenTelemetry can help keep your instrumentation portable if you later change providers.
What counts as a production logging platform?
A logger creates structured events; a hosted platform receives, stores, and searches them. That distinction matters when comparing Pino with services such as Better Stack and Axiom: adopting Pino does not by itself give a team hosted retention or searchable logs.

Next.js has built-in logging options in next.config.js for development output, including fetches, incoming requests, server functions, and browser-to-terminal logs. The framework documentation says incoming-request logging is development-only and does not affect production builds, so these options are not a production log-management service. How should a Next.js team compare the options?
- Instrumentation portability: Next.js recommends OpenTelemetry and describes it as platform-agnostic. It supports OpenTelemetry instrumentation out of the box, which can make changing destinations easier without rewriting all instrumentation. Next.js OpenTelemetry guide.
- Application coverage: Check support for the parts of your app that emit useful events: server components, route handlers, edge code, and client-side code. Verify instructions for your deployed Next.js version and router.
- Billing dimensions: Compare ingestion, compute, storage, retention, and query allowances together. A starting price or platform fee alone does not show the likely bill.
- Operational ownership: A hosted platform handles log storage and search as a service. A library-first setup can offer control, but you must also choose and operate a destination and collection/search infrastructure.
- Privacy and delivery: Check redaction controls, avoid sending secrets or unnecessary personal data, and ensure telemetry delivery problems cannot break application responses.
What do Better Stack and Axiom offer for Next.js?
Both vendors document Next.js integrations, but the published pricing figures use different billing dimensions and allowances. The figures below are vendor-published pages accessed October 7, 2026; they are not independent estimates, guarantees of a bill, or a like-for-like cost comparison.
| Option | Next.js approach | Published pricing details | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Better Stack | @logtail/next documentation covers client, edge, and server-side files, route-handler wrappers, client and server component logging, log levels, and sensitive-field redaction. Better Stack Next.js logging guide. |
The pricing page lists a free personal-project allowance of 3 GB of logs retained for 3 days. Logs & Traces ingestion is listed at $0.10 per GB, with retention at $0.05 per GB per month. Better Stack pricing. | The documentation warns that browser telemetry sent through the default rewrite can produce a 500 on the application domain if the ingest endpoint is slow or unavailable. For package version 0.4.0 or higher, it describes a proxy route handler that forwards telemetry with a five-second timeout, responds with 204, and logs delivery failures server-side. Follow the current package instructions for your app version. |
| Axiom | The vendor recommends @axiomhq/nextjs for sending data from a Next.js app without Vercel Drains and documents logging and error-capture setup. Axiom Next.js guide. |
The Personal plan is listed at $0/month and includes 500 GB/month of data-loading compute, 10 GB-hours of query compute, 25 GB of storage, and 30-day retention. Axiom Cloud is listed at $25/month plus usage and includes larger free allowances. Axiom pricing. | The pricing page describes usage-based pricing, so the platform fee does not represent a complete team cost. Its documentation notes that Next.js 16 renamed middleware to proxy; middleware.ts still works in Next.js 16 but is deprecated. |
When does Pino make sense?
Pino is a Node.js structured logging framework that produces JSON by default. It can be a sensible library choice when a team wants structured events and control over where they go, but Pino is not a hosted log-search platform. A Pino-based production setup still needs a destination or a self-managed collection, storage, and search stack. The cited implementation guide covers contextual logging, transports, timestamps, error stacks, and redaction. Its performance comparisons are published by the guide’s vendor and should not be treated as independent benchmark results. Pino logging guide.

How can you choose without guessing the monthly cost?
- Estimate ingestion: use your expected production log volume, not a development-day snapshot. Separate routine informational events from bursts caused by errors or incident debugging.
- Set a retention target: decide how far back you need to investigate an incident, then compare that period with included retention and any storage or retention charges.
- Estimate query use: consider how frequently engineers search logs and how intensive those queries are, especially where query compute is a billed dimension.
- Check app coverage and failure behavior: confirm the integration handles the deployed Next.js version and relevant runtimes, and test how telemetry behaves when delivery is delayed or unavailable.
- Choose an ownership model: compare the cost and operational effort of a managed platform with the infrastructure and maintenance required for a self-managed destination.
- Recalculate against live terms: apply your workload assumptions to the vendors’ current pricing pages. The published allowances and unit rates above can change and do not establish a universal cheapest provider.
