Is AI Coding Faster After You Count Testing and Review?

AI may make code arrive sooner, but reliable delivery still depends on review, testing, debugging, and integration. Here’s how to assess whether it helps.

AI can speed up drafting code without speeding up the work of delivering dependable software. Generated code still has to pass the same functional, security, and reliability requirements as code written by a person. The extra work may show up in review, testing, debugging, and integration—not necessarily as a fixed number of additional test hours.

Does AI-generated code need more testing?

It needs appropriate testing, just like any other code. There is no established universal amount of extra testing caused by AI assistance, and the evidence does not show that every generated change is defective. The practical issue is whether a team can verify a change well enough to trust it, including its behavior in the surrounding system.

AI can make a first draft arrive sooner, but a draft is not a verified change. Tests can catch many functional regressions, but they do not automatically detect every security, reliability, or design problem. Human review and other checks remain part of the quality process.

Why can coding feel faster while delivery does not?

Writing code is one part of a larger workflow. A generated change may still need someone to understand what it does, check whether it fits the codebase, test expected and unexpected cases, diagnose failures, and resolve integration issues. If those downstream tasks grow or become more difficult, faster drafting may not translate into faster delivery.

DORA’s 2024 report describes this tension at the delivery-system level: it says AI adoption significantly increases individual productivity, flow, and job satisfaction, while negatively affecting software delivery stability and throughput. DORA also emphasizes fundamentals such as small batch sizes and robust testing. Individual productivity and the performance of the delivery system are related, but they are not interchangeable measures.

What do the productivity findings actually measure?

Results that appear to disagree often concern different tasks, people, tools, and outcomes. A bounded new-project task is not the same as modifying a mature repository, and perceived speed is not the same as measured completion time. The figures below should be read as separate findings, not combined into a general estimate of how much faster or slower AI makes software development.

Source and finding What it indicates Important qualification
Peng et al. (2023), as summarized in Montana Research Foundation’s 2026 synthesis: developers completed a scoped greenfield task 55.8% faster with Copilot. AI assistance can accelerate a bounded coding task. This result concerns that task and study, not maintenance work or end-to-end delivery across teams.
METR (2025), as summarized in the same 2026 synthesis: experienced maintainers took 19% longer on real repository issues using early-2025 tools, while believing they were 20% faster. Perceived speed can diverge from measured time, especially in existing codebases. This was a separate study under different conditions from the greenfield task; the two percentages should not be averaged or treated as a direct comparison.
GitHub’s 2024 account of its Copilot/Accenture research: coding was reported as up to 55% faster, and 85% of developers said they felt more confident in code quality. Vendor-reported results include both a speed claim and a confidence measure. The 85% figure reflects confidence, not measured defect rates or reduced need for testing; the speed figure is vendor-reported.
TechRadar’s June 2026 report on GitLab’s AI Accountability Report: 79% of more than 1,500 surveyed developers believed software delivery had not accelerated as much as individual productivity, and 85% agreed review and validation had become the bottleneck. Survey responses point to downstream review and validation as perceived constraints. These are respondents’ perceptions, not instrumented measurements of delivery time or proof of a universal bottleneck.

A 2026 CHI study, “When Help Hurts: Verification Load and Fatigue with AI Coding Assistants,” examined verification load and fatigue among 60 professional software engineers and advanced computer science students. It provides evidence that checking and fixing assistant output is a meaningful subject of study, not a universal estimate of how many hours verification adds to a project.

How should a team tell whether AI is helping?

Measure the whole path from proposed change to dependable release, rather than using code volume or drafting time as the sole measure. Establish a baseline before changing the workflow, compare similar work where possible, and look for changes in both speed and outcomes.

  • Separate drafting from completion. Track time to produce a change and time until it has passed review, testing, and integration.
  • Track verification effort. Record review time, test failures, fixes after review, and debugging or rework. These measures help reveal whether effort has shifted downstream.
  • Watch delivery outcomes. Monitor throughput and stability alongside individual coding speed; a faster draft is not a win if changes are less reliable or harder to recover.
  • Compare like with like. Distinguish new work from maintenance, and account for task difficulty, team experience, tool version, and the period being measured.
  • Keep testing standards intact. Do not treat AI assistance, developer confidence, or generated tests as evidence that a change is safe without checking whether the tests and other controls cover the relevant risks.

IBM Research’s 2025 enterprise study also describes varied perceptions of AI’s impact and continuing questions around responsibility and ownership. Teams therefore need clear accountability for understanding and validating changes, even when an assistant produced much of the initial code.

What should change in the workflow?

Use AI where it helps, but make verification part of the plan rather than work that is assumed to disappear. DORA recommends experimental continuous improvement: try a workflow change, evaluate its effect on delivery, and adjust based on results. Keep changes small enough to review and test effectively, and make sure the person responsible for a change can explain and validate it.

If code generation accelerates but review queues, test failures, rework, or recovery problems worsen, the constraint has moved rather than vanished. If those costs remain controlled while delivery improves, the tool is helping the workflow—not merely producing code faster.
