In Next.js, opengraph-image is a recognized metadata route—not just an ordinary image filename—and a Proxy or authentication rule can redirect that request before the image is served. That is a likely explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis: the redirect could also come from a hosting access-control layer or another upstream rule.
Why the preview image request can end at login
Next.js supports static and generated Open Graph images in route segments. Its opengraph-image convention adds the relevant image metadata to the page head, and generated image routes are specialized route handlers. When a consumer follows the page’s og:image URL, it must be able to reach an image response to display the preview. If request handling instead redirects that URL to /login, the preview consumer may receive the login response rather than the intended image.

Next.js Proxy runs before routes are rendered and can redirect or rewrite requests. If a matcher or an authentication check treats the metadata image route as protected, an unauthenticated request may be sent to login. The Next.js metadata-file documentation specifically advises configuring Proxy matchers to exclude metadata files when Proxy is in use. See Next.js documentation for Open Graph image files, Proxy convention and behavior, and metadata file conventions.
The symptom by itself does not establish that Proxy caused the redirect. Without the application’s route configuration, Next.js version, response headers, and deployment setup, the redirect could also be introduced by hosting access controls or another upstream layer.

Trace the image URL and response
- Find the URL the page actually advertises. Inspect the rendered page metadata and record the exact URL in its
og:imagetag. Next.js can choose metadata from route segments; a more specific image in a deeper segment takes precedence over one higher in the route tree. The Next.js guide to metadata and OG images describes how these images are used for shared links. - Request that URL without a signed-in session. Check whether it returns image content or redirects to login. This reproduces the access condition relevant to a public link preview and distinguishes the image request from the page request.
- Inspect request interception and authentication. If the app uses Proxy, review its matcher and auth checks for the exact image path. Next.js authentication guidance shows redirecting unauthenticated visitors to
/loginand using matchers to exclude selected paths; compare the Next.js authentication guide with your own rules. - Check other layers if the app does not explain the redirect. Review deployment or hosting access controls and any other upstream request rules. A redirect observed at the image URL does not, on its own, identify which layer issued it.
- Repeat the unauthenticated request after a change. Verify the final URL and response directly. A successful check against your app does not by itself prove that every social platform’s preview fetcher will behave the same way.
Choose whether the image should be public
| Choice | What it means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Allow unauthenticated access to the preview image | Configure request handling so intended preview consumers can fetch the image, while keeping private application data protected. | Enables public link previews for that image; make sure the image itself is appropriate to expose. |
| Keep the image behind authentication | Retain the access restriction on the image route. | Unauthenticated preview consumers cannot fetch the protected image, so a public link preview may not show it. |
Choose based on whether the linked page’s preview image is intended to be public. Next.js cautions that Proxy should not be the only layer protecting data; excluding a public metadata asset from one auth check should not weaken protection for genuinely sensitive content. See the Proxy documentation and authentication guide.
