Why drying can help with shoe odor
Danner’s footwear-care guidance says odor-causing bacteria thrive in moist conditions and recommends drying footwear after it gets wet. That makes drying one useful part of shoe care, not a guaranteed cure for every odor. The guidance is about footwear care, not a medical diagnosis.

A shoe dryer moves air through footwear or warms its interior, depending on its design. A hanging dryer suspends shoes and directs airflow into them; an insert-style dryer places heating elements inside. These are different approaches, and the product pages cited below do not provide independent comparative performance tests.

How to dry shoes without damaging them
- Check the care instructions. Follow the footwear maker’s guidance and the dryer manufacturer’s directions. Take extra care with leather, adhesives, and other heat-sensitive materials.
- Remove excess moisture gently. Danner suggests newspaper as a non-appliance option for wet footwear.
- Use a purpose-built dryer if appropriate. Danner describes gently warmed-air boot dryers as one option. Choose settings and duration that the shoe and dryer makers allow.
- Let the shoes dry fully before wearing or treating them. Danner recommends using its odor-eliminator spray inside dry boots.
Avoid extreme or uncontrolled heat. Danner warns against campfire or strong direct heat, putting boots in a clothes dryer, and placing boots over a home heater or vent, which can also create a fire hazard. Its guidance is explicit: “Please do not put your boots in your clothes dryer.”

Other ways to manage shoe odor
- Removable footbeds: Danner recommends replacing removable footbeds yearly as an odor-care practice. This is the brand’s guidance, not a guarantee.
- Baking soda: Danner describes it as an inexpensive option for dry boots.
- Odor-eliminator spray: Danner says its spray is intended to inhibit odor-causing bacteria and recommends applying it inside dry boots.
- Everyday habits: Tetra Corporation suggests breathable footwear, moisture-wicking socks, changing socks daily, and alternating pairs rather than wearing the same pair on consecutive days. These are company recommendations, not independent clinical findings.
Panasonic’s 2018 announcement about its MS-DS100 concerned a shoe deodorizer, not a hanging dryer. Panasonic reported that odor intensity fell by 1.5 after five hours in a company test, while noting that the test was not conducted under actual-use conditions and that results vary with conditions, odor, and textile. The announcement does not establish that a hanging dryer works or that the device is currently available. The same announcement described a June 2018 internet survey of 2,000 people in Japan: about 62% of surveyed sneaker wearers said they took measures to remove shoe odor, and about half were dissatisfied with their methods. What a hanging dryer can—and cannot—solve
If dampness is contributing to odor, drying footwear regularly is a reasonable care step, and a hanging dryer is one possible tool. It does not establish that every shoe odor has the same cause, nor that any one dryer will eliminate it. The specific model and firsthand results implied by the headline are not established here; use the footwear maker’s care instructions and avoid uncontrolled heat.
