In a bug report about Next.js 16.2.4, developer Daniel Pertu found text that looked correctly spaced in JSX but rendered without a space. He traced the reported loss to a narrow combination of line layout and HTML entities, then counted 166 matching text runs in 88 files across 898 TSX files in his project. Those are Pertu’s project-specific findings—not evidence of a defect in every Next.js or SWC build.
What happened in the reported Next.js bug?
Pertu says a visual audit of CogniPrep surfaced the phrase “Word analogiesgive a pair…” even though the source appeared to include a space. His investigation focused on the SWC bundle used by Next.js 16.2.4. In his tests, the space disappeared only when three conditions appeared together:

- The JSX text run began on the same line as a previous sibling element.
- The text run continued across a newline.
- The run contained an HTML entity, whether named or numeric.
In Pertu’s variant tests, removing any one of those conditions preserved the leading space. He also reported that an ' entity after an inline link triggered the behavior, while a literal quote character did not. These results describe his tests in that version context; they do not establish the same behavior in other Next.js releases or compiler configurations. Daniel Pertu’s report

JSX source is transformed before it becomes the output shown in a browser. A visible space in the source file is therefore not, by itself, proof that the compiled output or rendered text contains that space. When a sentence appears joined despite apparently correct JSX, inspect the output at the stage where the mismatch occurs rather than relying only on the source view.

Pertu summarized the distinction this way: “The source looks right” is not evidence; the compiled output is. That is his conclusion from the reported investigation, not a general claim that source inspection is useless.
What did the compiler comparison establish?
Pertu says the same test case preserved the space with standalone @swc/core 1.16.13, unlike the SWC bundle in his Next.js 16.2.4 context. This comparison points to a difference between those specific environments; it does not show that standalone SWC always behaves differently, or that every Next.js build loses whitespace. When investigating a similar issue, record the exact Next.js version, whether the build uses Next’s bundled SWC, the standalone package version if applicable, and the JSX layout being tested.

How many cases did the project scan find?
To look beyond the first visible sentence, Pertu wrote a scan using the TypeScript compiler API. It searched for JSX text nodes matching the reported pattern: leading whitespace, a newline in the text, an entity, and same-line placement after a previous sibling.

The counts are the author’s results for one codebase, not an independently audited statistic. The scan was tailored to the suspected mechanism; the report does not establish it as a universal linter or as a way to detect every possible JSX whitespace problem.

How did Pertu fix the spacing?
He made the intended whitespace explicit with a JSX expression container. For example:

For a suspected match in your own code, verify the rendered or emitted text after changing it; the scan’s criteria reflect this particular report, not every possible whitespace edge case.

How to investigate a similar missing-space issue
- Confirm the symptom: check the rendered sentence and identify the exact boundary where the space is missing.
- Inspect the JSX around that boundary: note whether text begins on the same line as a preceding sibling, spans a newline, and contains an entity. Those are the three conditions in Pertu’s report.
- Record the compiler context: capture the exact Next.js version and whether you are testing Next’s bundled SWC or a standalone SWC package. Results from one context should not be assumed to apply to another.
- Make the intended separator explicit if needed: add
{' '}between adjacent JSX elements or text where a literal space is required, then check the output again. - Search for related cases carefully: a targeted TypeScript compiler API scan can help find text runs matching defined criteria, but its results depend on those criteria and need validation.
