Next.js Dynamic Import Lag: Preload Chunks the Right Way

Use a module-scope dynamic() declaration and literal import path in the Pages Router, then measure the production build to see whether first-use lag improves.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reduce delays when a dynamically imported component first appears, declare dynamic() at module scope and put a literal import() path inside its loader. In the Pages Router, Next.js documents that pattern as enabling it to match the dynamic call to its webpack bundle and module IDs so the chunk can be preloaded before rendering. It is framework behavior, not a guaranteed latency improvement: verify the production build and measure the component’s actual first use.

Fix the dynamic import pattern first

In a Pages Router project, write the dynamic import as a static, literal path inside the dynamic() call:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

import dynamic from 'next/dynamic'

const DynamicChart = dynamic(() => import('../components/Chart'), {
  loading: () => <p>Loading chart…</p>,
})

Keep the declaration at the top level of the module. Avoid constructing the import path from a variable or template string. Next.js says it needs the import inside dynamic() to associate the call with webpack bundle and module identifiers and preload the chunk before rendering. This guidance is documented in the Pages Router lazy-loading guide.

The loading component gives users visible feedback while deferred content becomes available. It does not make the request start earlier; the import pattern and the user’s route through the application determine when the chunk is requested.

Check the router and component boundary

Pages Router

The module-scope declaration with a literal import path is the documented pattern for allowing Next.js to match a dynamic call to its webpack bundle and preload it. If the project uses the Pages Router, check these two details before changing other loading behavior:

  • dynamic() is declared at module scope, not inside a component or function.
  • The loader contains a literal import path, not a variable-built path.

App Router

The App Router’s lazy-loading rules depend on whether the dynamically imported code is a Client Component or a Server Component. The current App Router lazy-loading guide describes next/dynamic as combining React.lazy() and Suspense and supports conditional loading patterns. But automatic code splitting is not supported when a Server Component dynamically imports a Client Component. Dynamically importing a Server Component also does not lazy-load that Server Component itself; only its Client Component children are lazy-loaded.

Distinguish a late chunk from a slow navigation

Chunk preloading for a dynamic component and route prefetching address different work. Dynamic-import preloading associates a component’s dynamic call with its chunk. Route prefetching fetches route assets ahead of navigation through a Next.js Link. Automatic route prefetch runs only in production, and its behavior differs for static and dynamic routes; see the route prefetching guide.

Identify which event is delayed before changing code: navigation to a route, the first render of a deferred component, or an interaction that triggers a library import. Inspect the relevant network request and its timing relative to navigation or user action. If the route itself is slow, dynamic-import preloading may not address the cause; if the chunk request starts only when a component is needed, route prefetch may not solve that first-use delay.

Choose between eager, deferred, and earlier loading

Lazy loading can reduce the JavaScript needed initially by deferring Client Components or libraries. The tradeoff is that the first use may wait for a chunk request. Compare the options against the experience you need:

Approach Initial client JavaScript When the request begins Potential user-visible effect
Load immediately More code may be needed on the initial path. As part of the initial loading path. Less deferred work at first use, at the cost of initial transfer.
Defer with a dynamic import Code not needed initially can be omitted from the initial path. When the deferred component is needed. First use can show a loading state or wait for the chunk.
Use the documented module-scope pattern Still defers the component rather than making it part of the initial path by default. Next.js can associate the dynamic call with its chunk for preloading before rendering. May help avoid a late first-use request; the actual latency effect depends on the application.

For an external library used only after an interaction, native import() can load it on demand and reduce initial client JavaScript. The request begins when that interaction path runs. Do not treat this as already preloaded unless the application separately arranges earlier loading.

Verify the result in production

Next.js documents code splitting and route prefetch as defaults and recommends considering lazy loading third-party libraries where appropriate in its production checklist. That guidance does not establish a benchmark for your application or guarantee that deferring a specific component improves perceived speed.

  1. Confirm whether the delayed request belongs to navigation, a dynamic component, or an interaction-triggered library.
  2. Check the router and, in the App Router, the Server/Client Component boundaries involved.
  3. For the Pages Router pattern, confirm the top-level declaration and literal import path.
  4. Build and run the production version. Automatic route prefetch behavior is production-only.
  5. Measure initial JavaScript transfer and the time from first use to usable content, including whether a loading state appears.

Compare the measured first-use experience with the initial JavaScript saved. Official documentation describes implementation behavior and constraints, but does not provide a named benchmark or percentage improvement for this technique. Check the documentation against the Next.js version installed in the project before relying on version-specific behavior; the cited guides identify themselves as updated February 27, 2026.
