When choosing a next-generation firewall (NGFW) in 2026, check for application-aware policy, integrated intrusion and threat prevention, controlled visibility into encrypted traffic, identity and device context, and management that fits your deployment. These five capabilities form a practical evaluation framework—not an official standard or certification checklist. Compare products only under conditions that match your traffic, sites, cloud footprint, security policy, and staff capacity.
1. Application-aware policy and Layer 7 control
A conventional network rule can allow or block traffic by address, port, and protocol. Application-aware policy adds the ability to make decisions based on the application or its function. That can make rules more closely reflect what an organization intends to permit, rather than relying only on the network path an application uses.

CISA and partner agencies identify application identification and control as a core NGFW capability in their joint guidance on modern approaches to secure network access. For cloud deployments, Google Cloud documents Layer 7 application control for traffic entering or leaving a VPC and for communication between VPC resources in its Cloud NGFW overview.
What to verify
- Whether the firewall can identify the applications and application functions your policies need to distinguish.
- Which relevant traffic paths it covers, including communication between cloud resources if that is part of your environment.
- How application-based rules interact with existing address-, port-, and protocol-based rules.
2. Integrated intrusion and threat prevention
CISA’s joint guidance describes built-in intrusion prevention for detecting and blocking network anomalies, as well as advanced threat protection and integrated threat intelligence. The feature names alone do not tell you what protection is active in a particular configuration.

What to verify
- Which intrusion-prevention, threat-protection, and threat-intelligence functions are included in the option you are evaluating.
- Whether any functions require a separate license or depend on a cloud service.
- Throughput and latency with the protections you intend to enable, measured using a representative mix of your own traffic.
There is no neutral, comparable performance benchmark established here. Vendor throughput figures should not be treated as an apples-to-apples result unless the test conditions and enabled protections match your intended deployment.
3. Visibility into encrypted traffic
Encrypted-traffic inspection is a capability to evaluate, not a rule that all encrypted traffic should be decrypted. Inspection may help apply security controls to traffic that would otherwise be less visible, but its usefulness depends on the organization’s policy, the traffic involved, and how exceptions are handled. The available product documentation and buyer guidance do not establish one universal inspection policy or provide legal guidance.
Rank #2
- APPLIANCE ONLY: Hardware unit sold without a service subscription — security services, firmware updates and support are NOT included and must be purchased separately to activate protection.
- PERFORMANCE: Up to 2.5 Gbps firewall inspection, 1 Gbps threat prevention and 1.2 Gbps IPSec VPN throughput driven by SonicWall's patented Reassembly-Free Deep Packet Inspection (RFDPI) engine.
- CONNECTIVITY: 8x1GbE + 2x1G SFP in a desktop form factor; zero-touch deploy and manage on-box or via cloud Network Security Manager (NSM).
- THREAT PROTECTION: SonicOS 8 delivers intrusion prevention, gateway anti-malware, application control, TLS/SSL decryption, Capture ATP multi-engine sandboxing (RTDMI) and reputation-based content & DNS filtering with an active service subscription.
- BUILT FOR SMALL BUSINESS & BRANCH: Secure SD-WAN, IPSec and SSL VPN plus Zero-Trust Network Access through Cloud Secure Edge keep distributed sites and remote workers protected.
What to verify
- Which encrypted traffic can be inspected and how inspection policies are configured.
- How the firewall handles sensitive traffic and policy exceptions.
- What operational impact inspection has in your environment, including its effect on the performance measurements you collect.
Vendor documentation, including the Next-Generation Firewall documentation from Palo Alto Networks and Check Point’s NGFW buyer guide, treats encrypted-traffic visibility as an evaluation area. Use those materials to understand the vendors’ descriptions of their own products, not as independent proof of comparative performance.

A policy based only on network location may not express which user, application, or device should have access. Zero-trust architecture offers a broader approach that can use identity and context alongside network information; it is an architectural approach, not a product label or a single required firewall design.
NIST’s NCCoE materials describe identity, device, network discovery, traffic inspection, and access-policy concepts in implementation examples. NIST also notes that “There is no single approach for migrating to ZTA that is best for all enterprises” in its introduction to the guide. Its architecture materials provide further implementation context.
What to verify
- Which user and device context the firewall can use in policy decisions.
- Whether that context integrates with the access policies and identity systems relevant to your organization.
- How policies behave when identity or device information is unavailable or changes.
Product terms are not interchangeable with general standards: Palo Alto Networks, for example, uses the terms User-ID, App-ID, and Device-ID for capabilities in its own platform. Treat those names as vendor terminology and verify the specific functions they provide in the vendor documentation.

An NGFW needs to fit the places where your organization actually enforces policy. Depending on your environment, that may include branch offices, data centers, cloud resources, or traffic between them. Check whether administration, policy handling, and log visibility work across the deployments you need to operate—not just in a demonstration of one environment.
Cloud services may divide capabilities among service tiers. Google Cloud’s documentation distinguishes Essentials, Standard, and Enterprise Cloud NGFW tiers; check the current service documentation for the capabilities included in the tier under consideration rather than assuming “NGFW” denotes one fixed bundle. Check Point’s buyer guide also raises hybrid cloud security, automation, and unified management as evaluation themes. Those are vendor-published buyer-guide topics, not independent evidence that a particular product is superior.
What to verify
- Whether the available form factor and service model fit your environment: appliance, virtual deployment, cloud service, or a combination.
- How policy administration and log visibility work across the specific sites and environments in scope.
- Whether the people responsible for operating the system can manage the proposed deployment and its policy model.
Compare options under the same conditions
Before shortlisting products, write down the traffic paths, applications, protections, and deployment locations that matter. Then compare each option against the same requirements and test conditions.
| Evaluation area | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Application and traffic coverage | Does it identify the applications you need to control and cover the relevant traffic paths, including east-west cloud traffic where applicable? |
| Threat prevention | Which intrusion-prevention and threat-intelligence functions are enabled, licensed, or dependent on a cloud service? |
| Encrypted traffic | What inspection policies and exception controls are available, and how will they fit your security policy? |
| Identity and device context | Can it use the identity and device information your access policy requires? |
| Deployment and operations | Does its appliance, virtual, or cloud-service model fit your sites, and can your team administer policy and review logs across them? |
| Performance | What throughput and latency do you measure with your traffic mix and the protections you will actually enable? |
Because no neutral comparable benchmark is established here, do not use unsupported vendor figures as a substitute for measurements under matched conditions. A useful comparison keeps the traffic mix, deployment scope, and enabled protections consistent across the options being assessed.
