Start with MDN Web Docs’ free Getting started modules, then make a small website as you learn what HTML, CSS, and JavaScript each do. You do not need previous coding experience: MDN says, “There is no prerequisite knowledge for starting this course.”
Start with a beginner-friendly setup
MDN’s Getting started modules are designed to orient new learners before they take on more advanced material. They cover the basic software and environment, files and the command line, introductory web concepts, and the creation of a first simple site. You can begin without knowing how to code.
For the hands-on work, MDN’s core learning guidance points beginners toward a web browser and a code editor. You do not need to assemble a complicated development setup before learning the basics.
Build a small first website
Use MDN’s Your first website guide to plan and create a modest page. Decide what the page is for and what information it should contain before worrying about making it look professional. A simple page gives you a place to practice and see how the three foundational technologies work together.

Understand the three jobs
- HTML gives the page its structure and meaning, such as headings, paragraphs, and links.
- CSS controls how that content looks and is laid out.
- JavaScript adds behavior and interactivity.
These are different roles, but you do not have to master one completely before touching the others. A first project is a practical way to see how structure, presentation, and behavior fit together.
Strengthen the fundamentals
After your first page, follow MDN’s Core learning modules. They develop semantic HTML, CSS styling and layout, JavaScript fundamentals, and the surrounding skills involved in building an accessible basic web app. The MDN Curriculum also covers practices for managing and deploying code.

- It can be a gift option
As you work through the tutorials, attempt the challenges and skill checks rather than only reading. Then make deliberate changes to your own page: revise its structure, try a different layout, or add a small interactive feature. This turns the material into practice without requiring a large project.
Leave frameworks for a later stage
Frameworks and other specialized tools can be useful once the basic jobs of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are familiar. They are not prerequisites for starting web development. Learning the foundations first makes it easier to understand what a framework is helping you organize and when you actually need one.
Rank #3
MDN describes its learning path as taking a learner from beginner to “comfortable” with the fundamentals—not instantly to expert. Treat that as a useful first destination. You can choose a more specialized direction after you have built and understood a few small projects.

- Follow a lesson. Work through MDN’s beginner modules in order, setting up only what the lesson requires.
- Try the challenge or skill check. Use it to test whether you can apply the concept, not just recognize it on the page.
- Change your own site. Apply the idea to your project and inspect the result in a browser.
- Repeat with the core modules. Add semantic structure, improve the layout, and introduce behavior as the relevant lessons come up.
- Explore tools beyond the fundamentals when you have a reason. Consider a framework or a specialized topic after the underlying concepts make sense.
This route keeps the first milestone concrete—a small working website—while leaving room to build skills in accessibility, code management, and deployment as you progress.
