A 2023 report from Armido Studer’s group at the University of Münster describes a silicon-based protecting group for alcohols that can be removed with blue visible light. The approach is a laboratory chemistry report, not evidence of a commercially available reagent or a routine-use procedure.
What the blue-light protecting group does
Protecting groups temporarily mask a reactive part of a molecule so a chemist can modify another part without affecting it. Silyl groups are commonly used to protect alcohols. The group reported by Studer’s team, benzoyldiisopropylchlorosilane, was designed to combine that familiar role with an acyl silane motif that decomposes under blue light.

In practical terms, the researchers report that the protected alcohol can be unveiled by photochemical deprotection using visible blue light. The proposal is to offer a light-triggered alternative to cleavage methods that use ultraviolet light.

Which alcohols and protecting-group combinations were reported?
The Chemistry World account describes demonstrations involving primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols, and reports that the new group can be used alongside other protecting groups with high orthogonality. That is evidence of demonstrated scope, not a guarantee that every alcohol or every combination of protecting groups will work. The account does not provide a complete compatibility matrix.

For a specific synthesis, compatibility depends on the substrate, the other functional groups and protecting groups present, and the conditions used. The published report and its supporting information are the appropriate sources for evaluating an individual reaction.
Why use blue light instead of ultraviolet light?
The clearest comparison is with the earlier sisyl protecting group, which the article says is removed using UV light. UV exposure can also cleave bonds a chemist intends to preserve. Visible-light cleavage may reduce that risk, which is why the Chemistry World article presents the wavelength choice as an advantage; it does not establish that blue light is universally safer or more selective across substrates.

The reported deprotection requires methanol. That creates a practical obstacle for applications involving biomolecules that need aqueous conditions. Solvent compatibility therefore matters alongside the light source and the molecule’s other functional groups when considering whether the method fits a synthesis.
