Nanofiltration for Better Energy Storage: A Look at Flow-Battery Membranes

Nanofiltration may help tune separators in all-vanadium flow batteries, but the evidence is a research finding, not proof of broad commercial deployment or a universal energy-storage boost.

Nanofiltration (NF) could improve one part of energy storage: the membrane separating the two electrolytes in an all-vanadium redox flow battery. A 2011 study reported that membranes with narrower pore-size distributions increased selectivity between vanadium ions and protons, and that cells using its membranes performed comparably to commercialized Nafion. That is a promising research result, not proof that NF separators are widely used in batteries today.

What nanofiltration means in a flow battery

Nanofiltration is a membrane-separation approach in which small pores help determine which substances can pass through a membrane. In the battery context discussed here, NF is not a way to filter or store electricity. It is a possible design for the separator between a redox flow battery’s positive and negative electrolyte compartments.

Those liquid electrolytes contain redox-active species that store and release energy as they move through the battery system. The separator has two competing jobs: restrict crossover of those active species, which can reduce performance, while allowing charge-balancing ions to pass so the battery can operate.

What the 2011 vanadium-battery study found

Zhang and colleagues examined NF membranes as an alternative to traditional ion-exchange membranes in all-vanadium redox flow batteries. Their proposed mechanism was pore-size exclusion: changing the membrane’s pore-size distribution changes the relative transport of vanadium ions and protons.

The abstract states: “The results showed that membranes show increasing vanadium ion/proton (V/H) selectivity with decreasing pore size distribution.” The authors also reported that cells assembled with their prepared membranes had performance comparable to commercialized Nafion. These are the study’s reported findings; they do not establish a quantified energy-storage gain, nor do they demonstrate present-day commercial adoption. Why selectivity is only part of the design

A separator that blocks more vanadium crossover is not automatically a better battery membrane. If it also impedes charge-balancing ions, the battery may lose ionic conductivity. Reviews of redox flow battery membranes identify several properties that must be considered together:

  • Selectivity and crossover: how well the membrane limits unwanted transport of redox-active species while permitting useful ion transport.
  • Ionic conductivity: whether charge-balancing ions can move readily enough for battery operation.
  • Stability: whether the membrane withstands the battery’s chemical environment and physical operating demands.
  • Water uptake and ion-exchange capacity: properties that affect membrane transport and behavior in aqueous systems.
  • Sustainability and cost: practical considerations alongside performance.

These are linked trade-offs, not independent scores. A meaningful comparison between NF and ion-exchange or other porous membranes therefore depends on operating chemistry and measures such as vanadium/proton selectivity, conductivity, active-species crossover, stability, electrolyte uptake, and cost. The reviews describe design considerations rather than a complete head-to-head ranking of commercial products. Why the result does not apply to every battery

The direct NF evidence described above concerns aqueous all-vanadium redox flow batteries. It should not be treated as evidence that the same membrane approach performs similarly in other battery chemistries.

Non-aqueous redox flow batteries add chemistry-dependent constraints. A 2022 review identifies solvent uptake, ion transport, and redox-species permeability as important membrane-design factors, and describes high-performance membranes as an ongoing challenge. A pore structure suited to an aqueous vanadium electrolyte cannot be assumed to work in a different solvent and electrolyte system. What is—and is not—established about deployment

The cited work establishes NF membranes as a research direction for redox flow battery separators and reports a favorable selectivity trend and comparable cell performance in the authors’ experiments. The available evidence does not establish how widely NF separators are used commercially today, whether a particular water-treatment NF membrane is compatible with battery electrolytes, or whether NF delivers a general improvement in energy storage.

For a battery application, a membrane must be designed and evaluated for the specific electrolyte chemistry and operating conditions. The word “nanofiltration” alone is not a compatibility specification.
