Neither wins by default. A last-generation flagship is usually the better value when it costs meaningfully less than the new model at the same storage and condition, has enough software support left for your planned ownership, and lacks no upgrade you specifically need. The new phone can be the better buy when the price gap is small or its improvements solve a real problem for you.
Compare the total cost, not the generation label
Start with the final price you would actually pay for each phone on the same day and in your market. A launch price is not a current offer, and a retailer listing or promotion can change quickly. Compare the same storage capacity and purchase condition—new with new, or used with used—and account for tax, carrier status, trade-ins, and other discounts consistently.

- Check whether each phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier, and compare the same seller type.
- Include any shipping, tax, trade-in credit, or required plan cost in the total.
- For a used or refurbished phone, account for its condition, warranty, return terms, and the seller’s reputation.
A lower sticker price is not automatically a better deal if it buys less storage, a weaker warranty, uncertain network compatibility, or a shorter period of useful support.

Decide which new features matter to you
Compare the differences that affect your use—not the fact that one model has a higher number. For example, TechRadar’s 2026 comparison of the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra lists the same 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate, stated 2,600-nit peak brightness, rear-camera resolutions, 12MP front camera, and 5,000mAh battery. It also reports several S26 Ultra changes that may matter to some buyers:

- Charging: 60W wired and 25W wireless charging, compared with 45W wired and 15W wireless on the S25 Ultra.
- Weight: 214g, compared with 218g.
- Camera apertures: the S26 Ultra has wider apertures, a refinement relevant to camera use, though the cited comparison alone does not establish how much better every photo will look.
- Privacy Display: a built-in feature that may be valuable if you often view sensitive information in public.
These are model-specific details, not a rule that newer phones always have meaningfully better hardware. If faster charging or Privacy Display would change your everyday experience, paying extra may make sense. If you would rarely notice the differences, the older phone’s lower price may be more compelling.
TechRadar records US 256GB launch prices of $1,299.99 for the S26 Ultra and $1,299 for the S25 Ultra, and UK 256GB launch prices of £1,279 and £1,249 respectively. These are historical launch-price figures, not current retail offers. Check the same-day price in your own market before drawing a value comparison. Check storage and configuration before judging the price
A generation-to-generation comparison can be misleading if the base storage changes. Android Authority’s 2026 guide reports that the US Galaxy S26 base model starts at $900 with 256GB, while the S25’s 256GB launch price was $850; it also notes that the S25 launched with a 128GB option at $800. The guide mentioned an approximately $700 Amazon listing for a global S25 model at the time it was written. That listing is a dated snapshot, not a verified current offer, and it should not be treated as equivalent to a current local price without checking the configuration and seller.

Make sure software support covers your ownership period
Before choosing the older phone, look up the official software and security support commitment for that exact model and region. Then compare the remaining support with how long you plan to keep the device. A general statement about a brand’s update policy does not establish the end date for an individual phone.
If you intend to keep a phone for several years, remaining updates are part of its value: a purchase discount may be less attractive if the older model’s support period does not cover your intended use. Android Authority’s discussion of last-generation phones highlights the importance of considering support and resale, but its examples do not establish a support end date for every model. Balance the savings against condition, warranty, and resale
Buying last year’s flagship can reduce the upfront cost, but the deal depends on what is being sold and what protection comes with it. Verify the phone’s condition, seller, return rights, warranty, and compatibility with your carrier and region. If buying used, confirm that the listed storage and model are the ones you intend to buy.
Resale value may also affect the eventual cost of ownership, but it varies by model and market. Do not assume the newer phone will recoup a particular amount, or that an older flagship’s purchase savings will necessarily be offset later. Treat resale as an uncertain part of the calculation, not a guaranteed discount.
Best Value
A practical decision rule
- Find current local prices. Compare the exact models on the same day, including tax and discounts.
- Match the configuration. Use the same storage capacity and comparable condition, seller type, and carrier status.
- List the upgrades you would use. Separate useful changes—such as faster charging or a privacy feature—from differences that will not affect your routine.
- Verify remaining support. Check the official commitment for each exact model and region against the period you expect to keep it.
- Review the purchase protections. Confirm warranty, return terms, seller reputation, and network compatibility before treating a lower price as a better value.
- Choose based on the trade-off. Favor the older flagship when its savings are substantial and its support and condition meet your needs; favor the new phone when the price gap is small or a specific upgrade is worth paying for.
There is no established market-wide statistic showing that one generation is generally better value. The answer depends on the specific pair, current prices, configuration, support period, and the features you will actually use.
