New macOS Malware Masquerades as a Fake Zoom Installer

A fake Zoom-branded disk image can trick Mac users into bypassing Gatekeeper and entering their account password to install the CloudSyncD backdoor.

A fake Zoom-branded Mac installer is being used to deliver CloudSyncD, a two-stage backdoor that tricks users into overriding macOS security checks and entering their account password. The report concerns an impersonating disk image—not the legitimate Zoom app or Zoom’s systems. Jamf Threat Labs analyzed samples for both Intel and Apple silicon Macs, but its report does not establish how many people were infected.

What happened—and what the report does not show

Jamf Threat Labs says it first encountered CloudSyncD through routine VirusTotal monitoring on September 15, 2026. The initial build appeared to still be under development. After monitoring samples for two days, Jamf identified versions configured to communicate with live command-and-control infrastructure. Jamf published its analysis on September 30, 2026; Macworld’s incident report appeared the same day.

Those findings establish that Jamf analyzed malware samples and observed live infrastructure. They do not establish a campaign’s size: the cited reports provide no victim count, prevalence estimate, or financial-loss figure. How the fake Zoom installer works

Jamf’s analyzed samples use a familiar Mac installation layout to make the disk image appear credible. The danger comes not just from the app’s branding, but from instructions that persuade a user to bypass a macOS warning and supply a local account password.

  1. A Zoom-branded disk image opens. The mounted volume is named Zoom and displays an app icon beside an alias to the Applications folder.
  2. The disk image coaches the user to override Gatekeeper. Its background instructions direct the user to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and tell them to choose “Open Anyway.” Jamf says the app is ad-hoc signed, so macOS blocks an ordinary launch and the user is encouraged to override that protection.
  3. A fake authorization prompt asks for the Mac password. The first-stage app, named app_installer, validates the entered password against the local account using dscl. A counterfeit “Downloading Zoom…” progress window adds to the appearance of a normal setup process.
  4. The password is hidden in a decoy file. In the analyzed samples, the dropper stores the credential in base64 inside ~/.config/zoom/data.json. It surrounds the password with random filler in a cache string; zero-width Unicode characters appended to the visible version value encode where the credential is located.
  5. A second-stage payload is launched with elevated privileges. The dropper contains a universal Mach-O payload. Jamf’s analysis saw an initial attempt to execute it through /dev/fd fail; the sample then wrote a temporary file and launched the payload with sudo, using the validated password.

These steps describe Jamf’s analyzed samples, including behavior seen in its analysis environment; they are not a guarantee that every build or infected Mac will behave identically.

What CloudSyncD can do

Jamf reports that the second-stage payload supports both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. It gathers host and hardware information, checks in with command-and-control infrastructure, and can receive encrypted tasks carrying Mach-O executables or gzipped tar archives. In the live implant Jamf analyzed, the beacon interval was 8 to 16 seconds; that observed interval should not be treated as a universal behavior for every build.

What Jamf did not observe

In its analyzed session, Jamf did not observe the malware creating a LaunchAgent or LaunchDaemon, or moving the implant to its configured installation directory. The report therefore does not establish that persistence was successfully set up in that session.

Jamf also says it found no built-in functions in the analyzed malware for collecting browser credentials, Keychain data, or cryptocurrency-wallet contents. That does not make the threat benign: the installer phishes a local account password and uses it to launch a privileged second stage.

How to avoid the fake installer

  • Get Zoom and other software from the Mac App Store or directly from the developer. Avoid downloads from unfamiliar repositories, and inspect unexpected download links before opening them.
  • Treat an installer’s request to override Gatekeeper as a reason to stop and verify the app’s source independently. Do not follow setup instructions from an unverified disk image simply because its branding looks familiar.
  • Do not enter your Mac account password into an installer you did not obtain from a trusted source or cannot verify.

Gatekeeper is a security check, not a guarantee that every app is safe. Likewise, the cited reporting does not establish that any particular paid antivirus product detects or stops CloudSyncD. Jamf says organizations using its own threat-prevention, advanced threat-control, and web-protection capabilities can configure them to block and report similar threats; that is vendor guidance, not an independent effectiveness test.

If you entered your Mac password

If you entered your password into a suspicious installer, treat the Mac as potentially compromised and contact your organization’s IT or security team, or a qualified incident responder. Jamf’s report describes the analyzed malware but does not provide a consumer cleanup procedure that can be assumed to fit every possible infection.

What IT teams can check

Jamf’s report includes sample-specific SHA-256 hashes, command-and-control indicators, and file paths. Reported artifacts include the original Zoom.dmg, the app_installer first-stage app, ~/.config/zoom/data.json in the development build, and the implant path ~/.local/share/cloudsync/.config/logs/sync.err.
