Their two-step process embeds gold particles in yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG), then uses scanning femtosecond laser pulses with a continuously changing polarization direction to reshape selected particles into oriented nanorods. The resulting asymmetric arrangements respond differently to left- and right-circularly polarized light.
The experimental study, published in Opto-Electronic Science on 7 September 2026 as “Femtosecond laser inscribed 3D optical chirality” (DOI: 10.29026/oea.2026.260017), points to an internal-writing route for polarization-control components. It demonstrates the physical effect, but not yet a qualified commercial device.

How the laser creates chirality inside YAG
1. Gold nanoparticles are embedded first
The team began with yttrium aluminum garnet, a durable inorganic crystal, containing near-spherical gold nanoparticles. This arrangement puts the optical material inside a solid host rather than on an exposed surface. The host remains in place while selected particles are modified by the laser.
2. Femtosecond pulses reshape selected particles
Researchers scanned the loaded crystal with ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses. Because the energy is delivered in highly localized bursts, the process can alter nanoparticles at chosen positions and depths. The near-spherical particles were reshaped into gold nanorods, and the rods acquired different orientations through the scan.

3. Asymmetric geometry breaks mirror symmetry
Chirality means that a structure and its mirror image cannot be superimposed. In this experiment, the three-dimensional arrangement of differently oriented nanorods lacks mirror symmetry. That geometric asymmetry produces a chiroptical response: the structure interacts differently with opposite circular polarizations.
| Process stage | What is controlled | Structural result | Optical consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Particle loading | Gold nanoparticles distributed in YAG | Metal inclusions are enclosed in the crystal | Provides the material platform for localized writing |
| Laser scanning | Femtosecond-pulse exposure at selected locations and depths | Near-spherical particles become nanorods | Creates a programmable internal nanostructure |
| Polarization evolution | Direction in which the laser polarization rotates | Rod orientations form one handedness or its opposite | Sets the sign of the chiroptical response |
| Processing conditions | Laser-writing parameters, including the scan process | Particle morphology and arrangement change | Shifts the response across visible and near-infrared wavelengths |
Handedness can be switched by reversing polarization rotation
The writing beam does more than supply heat and pressure to the nanoparticles. Its polarization is varied continuously during the scan, and the direction of that rotation determines the handedness of the written structure. Reversing the rotation direction produces nanostructures with the opposite chirality.

This is a fabrication-level form of control: the researcher can choose which mirror-related version of the structure is written instead of accepting a fixed handedness from a preassembled pattern. Changing the processing parameters also tunes the optical response from visible wavelengths into the near-infrared. The publication release does not provide a single numerical wavelength range or a performance curve, so the result should be understood as demonstrated tunability across those spectral regions rather than as a specified operating band.

A waveguide test shows polarization-dependent output
The team incorporated the written structures into optical waveguides, including a ridge-waveguide geometry formed from asymmetric nanoparticle arrays in the crystalline host. When circularly polarized light traveled through the device, left- and right-circularly polarized inputs produced different output intensities.

That observation links the internal nanostructure to a usable photonic function: a waveguide can distinguish polarization states through its transmitted signal. The available publication information does not state a numerical extinction ratio, insertion loss, propagation length or device efficiency. The demonstration therefore establishes differential output, not a finished specification for a polarization filter or sensor.
Why writing inside a crystal is different from surface fabrication
Most nanoscale optical fabrication places patterns on a surface or assembles particles before encapsulation. This method modifies particles after they are embedded, allowing the chiral arrangement to be constructed within the volume of YAG.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Stronger polarization discrimination: the intensity difference between the two circular polarizations must be increased for applications that need a clear binary signal.
- Lower waveguide loss: optical propagation losses must be reduced so that useful signals survive transmission through the written component.
- Large-area uniformity and reproducibility: the same morphology and optical response must be produced consistently over larger regions, not only in individually selected locations.
- Predictive process models: quantitative relationships are needed between laser power, scan speed, polarization evolution, nanoparticle shape and the resulting optical response.
These issues are coupled. A parameter change that improves rod reshaping or chiral contrast could also increase scattering, alter absorption or make the process less repeatable. Reliable scale-up therefore requires measurements that connect the laser recipe to both morphology and device-level loss.
Where the research could go next
Future work described with the study includes testing metals and host crystals beyond the gold-in-YAG combination, writing more complicated three-dimensional arrangements, extending operation to additional wavelength bands and using parallel writing to increase throughput. Parallelization could address the speed limits of serial scanning, but it would also make uniform control of pulse energy and polarization across many writing points more demanding.
What the 2026 study establishes
The joint team from Shandong University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Swinburne University of Technology and Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf provides an experimental demonstration that embedded nanoparticles can be reshaped into a controllable chiral architecture. The key capabilities are internal three-dimensional placement, reversal of handedness by changing polarization-rotation direction, visible-to-near-infrared response tuning and polarization-dependent waveguide output.
