Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi report that a new algorithm can forecast Arctic sea-ice extent as far as nine months ahead. Called the Random Analogue Predictor (RAP), it searches historical sea-ice records for patterns similar to current conditions and uses what followed those past patterns to create a range of possible forecasts. The researchers propose RAP as a transparent benchmark for evaluating more complex forecasting methods—not as a replacement for them.
What does the algorithm forecast?
RAP forecasts Arctic sea-ice extent: the area of the Arctic Ocean covered by sea ice. It does not predict the full Arctic climate or the timing and effects of climate change. According to NYU’s October 8, 2026 release, its reported forecast lead time reaches nine months.

The work is described in a peer-reviewed paper titled “Random analog prediction provides a benchmark for seasonal Arctic sea ice extent forecasting,” published in Scientific Reports (DOI: 10.1038/s41598-026-72959-0), as identified in the university release distributed by EurekAlert.

Rather than simulate the atmosphere, ocean and sea ice, RAP uses the historical record of Arctic sea-ice extent. It looks for earlier patterns resembling present conditions, then draws on the outcomes that followed those historical analogues to generate an ensemble of possible futures.

- Rich Polar Ecosystem Model Set: the package includes 1 diorama model box, 15 polar animal models, 6 mini pine tree decorations, 4 water ripple stickers, 1 polar-themed background card and 1 "Polar" sticker, 10 snowflake decorations, 1 pack of artificial snow powder and 1 pack of cotton decorations, totaling 40 pieces, enough to meet your needs(This product is suitable for people aged 15 and above)
- Appropriate Size: the diorama model box measures 11.81 x 7.87 x 1.97 inches/30 x 20 x 5 cm, These polar animal models range in height from 0.59 to 2.17 inches /1.5 to 5.5 cm, the pine tree decorations measure 2.95 to 5.12 inches/7.5 to 13 cm, and the snowflake models are 0.98 inches/2.5 cm and 0.79 inches/2 cm respectively, the background card measures 7.87 x 11.22 inches/20 x 28.5 cm, and the sticker measures 4.33 x 1.18 inches/11 x 3 cm
- Realistic Design: miniature pine trees of varying sizes are arranged in a staggered pattern, and snowflake decorations, combined with artificial snow and cotton, recreate the pure texture of snow and ice; Realistic models of polar animals can be arranged to create various dynamic scenes; Water ripple stickers are applied to simulate the polar coastal ecosystem and can be cut to size; Combined with polar background cardstock and stickers, this creates an immersive recreation of a arctic world
- Safe and Reliable: the polar animal models are made of quality resin with smoothly polished edges and no sharp corners, providing a delicate touch; The mini pine trees and snowflake decorations are made of flexible and durable plastic that is not easily broken or deformed; The stickers and background cards are sturdy and thick, remaining securely in place during use, providing a comfortable experience for scene building, display, and other various needs
- Versatile Usage Scenarios: featuring realistic polar animal figurines and complete scene components, this set is suitable for various applications such as creating polar-themed projects, building arctic models, desktop decoration, and educational props; It comes with a dedicated display box and can also be applied as a winter holiday gift, a collector's item for polar enthusiasts, a competition prize, or a decoration for themed parties
The range across that ensemble serves as an estimate of forecast uncertainty. It gives users a way to see how widely the algorithm’s possible outcomes vary, rather than receiving only a single forecast. The release does not establish that this uncertainty estimate is calibrated to a particular accuracy standard.
How its reported performance compares
NYU says RAP’s forecast skill was comparable to that of models used by the Sea Ice Prediction Network. For September sea-ice extent, the release reports that RAP’s forecast error was comparable to the errors of 34 models used for seasonal forecasting. This is a reported comparison, not evidence that RAP outperforms those models or is ready to replace operational forecasting systems.

The news release does not provide a full metric table or detailed evaluation period. A rigorous comparison among forecasting approaches would need to specify the target region and season, lead time, error or skill measure, evaluation period, treatment of uncertainty, and model complexity. Without those details, the reported result is best read as evidence that a relatively simple method can provide a useful comparison point—not as a definitive ranking.

Why a simple benchmark could matter
Forecasting systems built from physical processes and those built with AI or other data-driven techniques can be difficult to compare fairly. RAP’s proposed role is to offer a clear, interpretable reference: if a more complex system cannot improve meaningfully on a method that uses historical analogues, researchers have reason to examine what the added complexity contributes.

Francesco Paparella, inaugural director of Mubadala ACCESS at NYU Abu Dhabi and the study’s senior author, said the method’s value is not replacing sophisticated models, but providing “a clear standard against which they can be tested.” That framing matters: the release presents RAP as a benchmark for evaluating future forecasting approaches, not as a finished substitute for them.

Sea ice reflects some incoming solar energy back into space, while darker ocean water absorbs more. Changes in sea ice can also influence atmospheric and oceanic patterns beyond the Arctic. Better forecasts of extent could therefore help researchers study a feature of the climate system with effects that reach beyond the region.
