Neither “AAA” nor “indie” tells you whether a game is worth its price. Compare the specific games at the prices and editions available to you, then weigh what each offers against the experience you want, your hardware, and your budget. A larger production is worth paying more for only if its particular features matter to you; a lower-priced game is not automatically better value.
Start with what you will actually pay
Check both games on the storefront and platform where you plan to play. Compare the same currency, region, platform, edition, and sale status. A launch price, discounted price, bundle, and deluxe edition are different offers, and prices can change. Valve’s Steamworks pricing guidance says developers set their own Steam prices and points to factors such as the experience offered, comparable products, customer expectations, and customer feedback. That guidance is about Steam; it is not a pricing rule for every store.

There is no universal price threshold at which a game becomes good or poor value, and the category labels do not establish that an indie game is always cheaper or an AAA game always costs a particular amount. Make the decision using the actual listings in front of you.

Compare the experience, not the label
Think about the kind of play you want rather than assuming a budget or production category guarantees particular qualities. Compare the games on the dimensions that matter to you:
#1 Best Overall
- Genre and mechanics: Do you want a familiar style of play, a new idea, a particular challenge, or a specific pace?
- Tone and story: Are you buying for a world, characters, narrative, atmosphere, or something else?
- Play pattern: Will you play in short sessions, pursue repeat runs, or focus on a single campaign? Use reliably documented playtime as context if available, not as a quality score.
- Accessibility and controls: Check for the features and input options you need rather than assuming they are present.
- Technical fit: Confirm that the game supports your device and platform, and check relevant performance, storage, and control details for that specific version.
Hours per dollar can be one useful lens, but it cannot measure whether a game is enjoyable or suited to you. A short, focused experience can be worthwhile; a long game can still be a poor fit.
Check what the listed price includes
Read the store page carefully before comparing totals. One listing may be for a base game while another includes add-ons, and extra content can change the eventual cost. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes several purchase models, including a full-game purchase, downloadable content, in-game microtransactions, and recurring subscriptions.
Rank #2
- Identify whether the listing is the base game, a bundle, or a special edition.
- Check which DLC, expansions, or other add-ons are included and which cost extra.
- Look for in-game purchases or subscription requirements where applicable.
- Check whether online access or an account is required for the way you intend to play.
Compare the cost of the content you actually want, not just the headline price of the edition.

Ask what else you would buy with the same amount. The most useful alternatives share relevant traits such as genre, intended audience, scope, or current price; simply comparing one AAA release with any indie title can obscure what you are choosing between. Use current storefront listings for those comparisons rather than treating a category-wide average as a buying rule.

Historical Steam best-seller data offers context for why it is worth checking current prices. GamesRadar reported GameDiscoverCo analysis on November 24, 2025, that compared the median price of new Steam best-sellers from February 2023 to October 2025. The report described a 20% median decline for games ranked by units sold and a 14% decline for games ranked by revenue. Those figures apply to the report’s particular samples and ranking methods, not every game or the price of either title you are considering. Read the GamesRadar report.

Refund eligibility depends on the storefront and the purchase. If you are buying on Steam, consult Steam’s Common Refund Questions for its current policy. Steam says eligibility information for in-game purchases is shown at purchase; a refund is not guaranteed. Do not assume Steam’s terms apply to another store.

Make the choice against your priorities
Choose the AAA release if the specific scale, presentation, franchise, or style of play is worth its extra cost to you. Choose the indie game if its particular design and current price better match what you want. If neither seems like a good fit at today’s price, waiting for a sale or choosing a different game is also a valid outcome.
