Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your router is working normally, leaving it on without manually restarting it is not shown to cause harm by itself. A restart briefly disconnects your devices and may fix some connection problems, but it is not a guaranteed cure or a maintenance requirement for every router.
What happens when you restart a router?
A restart, also called a reboot or power cycle, turns the router off and starts it again. Your internet and local network are unavailable while it restarts, so connected devices may briefly lose access. NETGEAR says Wi-Fi settings are retained when rebooting the models covered by its instructions; that detail should not be assumed for every router. NETGEAR support

Restarting can sometimes resolve common connection issues. Google gives that qualified guidance for Nest Wifi and Google Wifi: it may help, but it is not a promise of faster service or a fix for every fault. Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi restart instructions
A reboot is different from a factory reset. A factory reset restores the router’s settings and can erase configuration, such as custom network settings. Do not choose a reset option when you only mean to restart.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Is there a reason to restart it on a schedule?
There is no universal weekly or monthly restart schedule established for all routers. Some models offer scheduled reboots, but availability and the manufacturer’s rationale are model-specific. TP-Link says its feature clears cache to enhance performance in the models covered by its guide; that statement does not establish that every router needs regular reboots. TP-Link reboot guide
If your router is stable, you do not need to restart it just because it has been running for a long time. Follow the instructions for your exact model and hardware revision if you do need to reboot it; controls, menu names, and timing vary.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
How to reboot it safely
- Use the router’s documented restart control. Depending on the model, this may be a power button, an app, a web interface, or a power cycle.
- Allow it to finish starting up. For covered NETGEAR models, the maker says to wait 30 seconds after switching the router off, or 10 seconds after unplugging models without a power button; rebooting may take up to two minutes. These are NETGEAR-specific directions, not timings for all routers. NETGEAR support
- Check the connection afterward. If the same problem returns, investigate the underlying issue instead of relying on repeated restarts.
What if the router keeps restarting by itself?
Repeated unexpected restarts are different from never manually restarting a stable router. They can point to a power, heat, firmware, or configuration problem. TP-Link lists these as possible causes and recommends checking the outlet and supplied adapter, improving ventilation, checking for an enabled auto-reboot schedule, and updating firmware for the correct model. TP-Link troubleshooting guide
- Power: Check that the router is firmly connected to a working outlet and use the supplied power adapter. NETGEAR also suggests trying another outlet; it lists a UPS as a possible troubleshooting step when power instability is suspected, not as a routine accessory for every router. NETGEAR support
- Heat: Ensure the router has ventilation and is not surrounded or covered in a way that traps heat.
- Firmware and settings: Check for an update intended for the exact router model and hardware revision, and review whether an automatic reboot schedule is enabled.
- Factory reset: Consider this only after other troubleshooting and after consulting the model’s instructions. It can clear settings, so make sure you understand what will need to be configured again.
If slow speeds, frequent disconnects, or dead zones continue despite troubleshooting and placement changes, replacement may be worth considering. TP-Link’s blog suggests considering replacement for a router five or more years old in that context; this is the manufacturer’s product guidance, not a universal lifespan rule. TP-Link blog
