Network Drive Won’t Open? Check the Host, Path, and Permissions

Find out whether a network drive problem is caused by an unreachable host, a bad path, discovery settings, credentials, permissions, or sign-in timing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a mapped network drive will not open, first find out whether the host is reachable, whether Windows can discover it, or whether the share is refusing your account. Those are different problems—and changing discovery or security settings will not fix a wrong path or missing permission. The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 connecting to an existing shared folder; remote workplace access and managed networks may require help from your IT team.

Start by identifying what fails

Before changing settings, note what happens when you open the mapped drive letter or enter the share path. Record the exact error, when it appears, and whether the problem affects one person, one computer, or several users. That helps distinguish a network problem from a share or account problem.

  • The computer or share is missing from Network: Windows discovery or the network connection may be involved.
  • A known path does not open: Check the server name, share name, and whether the host is available.
  • Windows repeatedly asks for credentials, or says access is denied: Check which account is being used and whether it has permission.
  • The drive works until sign-out or restart: Check the reconnect setting and whether the network is ready when Windows reconnects.

These symptoms help narrow the cause; they are not an exhaustive diagnostic tree.

Check the host, network, and share path

Confirm the destination is available

Make sure the computer or server containing the shared folder is powered on and connected. Ask the share owner or administrator whether the folder still exists and whether you have the correct server and share names. Do not guess a server name or substitute a different share.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Use the intended network

For a local share, the computer you are using and the host generally need to be on the appropriate same network. If you are away from a workplace, use only the remote-access method your organization approves, and ask IT whether that share is meant to be available off-site. VPN setup and access policies vary by organization.

On Wi-Fi, check that you are connected to the expected network. For Ethernet, make sure the cable is firmly connected at the computer and network equipment. A cable check only helps with a wired connection; it cannot fix an incorrect share path, credentials, permissions, or a protocol problem. See Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.

Enter the exact UNC path

A network drive is a remote folder assigned a drive letter for convenient access. If the owner or administrator provided a path such as \servershare, use that exact path rather than relying on a browse result. Microsoft’s Windows file-sharing guide explains how to map a network drive and connect to a shared folder.

Map or reconnect the drive in Windows

  1. Open File Explorer and select This PC.
  2. Select More (the three-dot menu), then Map network drive. In some Windows layouts, the option appears directly on the toolbar.
  3. Choose an unused drive letter and enter the exact folder path in Folder.
  4. Select Reconnect at sign-in only if you want Windows to try to restore this mapping when you sign in again.
  5. Select Finish. If prompted, provide the credentials authorized for that share.

If the mapping fails, note the error instead of repeatedly trying different names or accounts. A mapping gives a folder a drive letter; it does not create access rights to the folder.

Separate Network Discovery from access permission

Network Discovery controls whether Windows can find and display devices in File Explorer’s Network view. It is not the same as permission to open a share: a device can be visible while access is denied, and a direct path can sometimes work even when browsing does not show the device.

If Windows says Network Discovery is off, enable discovery and file sharing only when connected to an appropriate trusted or private network, following the Windows prompt. Do not turn on discovery for a network you do not trust just to test a drive.

If discovery will not stay enabled, Microsoft identifies stopped services and firewall restrictions as possible causes. The documented services include DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. On a managed computer, ask IT to check the relevant services and whether the needed discovery exception is allowed for the current network profile. Do not disable the firewall broadly. See Microsoft’s SMB troubleshooting guidance for administrator-level network and file-sharing context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolve credential prompts and access-denied errors

Confirm that Windows is using the intended account, then ask the share owner or administrator to verify that the account has both the relevant share and folder permissions. Do not send credentials to other people or lower access protections as a test. Finding a server through Network Discovery does not grant access to its files.

Some shares have special behavior. A WebDAV share may produce an authentication error that differs from an ordinary SMB share; Microsoft documents that case in its article on authentication errors on mapped web shares. Administrative shares on Windows computers also have specific access restrictions; see Microsoft’s guidance for administrative-share errors. If either situation applies, follow the relevant administrator guidance rather than applying an unrelated password or registry workaround.

When a mapped drive disappears after sign-in

First check whether Reconnect at sign-in was selected when the drive was mapped. Also consider whether the server or network is available when Windows attempts the reconnection—for example, a workplace connection may not yet be established at sign-in.

Mapped-drive behavior can depend on Windows version and how an application is launched. Microsoft has documented a historical reconnection issue for Windows 10 version 1809, as well as a case where mapped drives are unavailable to an elevated prompt when User Account Control is configured to prompt for credentials. Those are specific scenarios, not a reason to edit the registry or install a startup script routinely. For a managed sign-in script, Group Policy, VPN timing, or elevated application issue, contact IT. See Microsoft’s articles on the Windows 10 version 1809 reconnection issue and mapped drives in elevated prompts.

When basic checks do not resolve it

SMB is a common protocol for accessing files over a network. A failure that remains after checking the host, path, network, and permissions may involve name resolution, network transport, protocol negotiation, or the server’s file-sharing service. Diagnosing those issues can require administrator access and information from both the Windows client and the server.

Microsoft’s SMB troubleshooting checklist and advanced SMB guide cover deeper investigation, including client and server network traces.

Do not enable SMBv1 as a routine compatibility fix. Microsoft notes that it is no longer installed by default and advises against treating it as a casual remedy. If an older server may require it, have IT assess the server and a secure path forward rather than weakening protocol protections on your own.
