What is the difference between Factory Method and Abstract Factory?
The key difference is how much product variation the pattern coordinates and where that decision lives:

| Question | Factory Method | Abstract Factory |
|---|---|---|
| What does it create? | An implementation of one product type. | Several distinct, related product types. |
| Where does the choice belong? | In a creator subclass that overrides a creation method. | In a replaceable factory object selected for a product family. |
| What problem does it address? | Different creator variants need different implementations of a product. | Products must be selected as a coordinated, compatible set. |
| What does the client depend on? | The creator and product interfaces, rather than concrete product classes. | The abstract factory and product interfaces, rather than concrete factories or products. |
Refactoring.Guru defines Factory Method as a pattern that provides an object-creation interface in a superclass while allowing subclasses to change the type of object created (Factory Method). It describes Abstract Factory as a way to produce families of related objects without naming their concrete classes (Abstract Factory).

How Factory Method works
A base creator declares a factory method and usually contains a broader workflow that uses the product. Subclasses override the method to supply the implementation that fits their variation. The client can work with the product through a shared interface without selecting its concrete class itself.
#1 Best Overall
For example, a logistics application might have a transport workflow in a base creator. A road-logistics subclass creates a truck transport; a sea-logistics subclass creates a ship transport. The workflow stays shared, while the creator subclass determines the transport implementation.
This pattern is a good fit when the creator hierarchy is already a useful extension point and the creation choice belongs naturally inside that creator’s work. Its trade-off is that supporting variants may require additional subclasses.

How Abstract Factory works
An abstract factory declares creation methods for multiple product types. Each concrete factory implements those methods for one variant or family, so products selected through the same factory belong together. A client receives the factory through configuration or environment setup and uses its interface to create the products it needs.

A platform factory can create both kinds of component in a consistent style. The application code asks the factory for abstract buttons and checkboxes rather than constructing concrete platform classes or mixing variants.
Abstract Factory makes the family boundary explicit when mismatched products would be invalid or surprising. The cost is more structure: typically several product interfaces and concrete factory classes, which may be excessive for a small design.
Which pattern should you choose?
- Count the product types that vary. If the decision is about one implementation of one product type, Factory Method may be enough. If several related types need coordinated variants, consider Abstract Factory.
- Check whether the products must match. If components from a selected variant must be compatible, Abstract Factory expresses that constraint through a family-specific factory.
- Place the variation where it belongs. Choose Factory Method when a creator subclass should alter a product used by its inherited workflow. Consider Abstract Factory when creation methods for multiple products are accumulating and a separate factory object would clarify responsibility.
- Weigh the added structure. Factory Method can increase subclass count; Abstract Factory can add product interfaces and factory classes. If there is no meaningful variation or compatibility problem, a direct constructor or simpler creation method may be clearer.
- Let the design evolve if needed. A system can begin with Factory Method and later adopt Abstract Factory if it grows into coordinated product families. That is one possible evolution, not a requirement for every Factory Method design.
Is a simple factory the same as Factory Method?
No. “Factory” is a broad, sometimes ambiguous term. A simple factory is a creation helper or method, but it is not automatically the named Factory Method pattern. Factory Method specifically involves a superclass creator whose subclasses vary the product-creation method. Abstract Factory, in turn, coordinates several related product types through a family-oriented factory interface. Identify the structure and responsibility before labeling a design.

Common design mistakes
- Using Abstract Factory for a single, unrelated choice: If only one product implementation varies and no family compatibility is involved, its extra interfaces and classes may add complexity without solving a real problem.
- Calling every creation helper Factory Method: A method that constructs an object does not by itself have the subclass-variation structure of the pattern.
- Creating a family factory without a family constraint: Abstract Factory is most useful when the products belong together; otherwise, the family abstraction may be unnecessary.
- Building subclass hierarchies solely to avoid a direct constructor: Factory Method pays off when creator variation is meaningful, not simply because a design pattern is available.
