But survey expectations are not proof of safe, widespread autonomous operations. For network teams in 2026, the practical question is not whether AI can act; it is whether the system has enough visibility, explainability and control to act safely within a defined scope.
How AIOps changes network automation
Traditional network automation executes predefined rules and workflows: apply a configuration, enforce a policy or respond to a known condition. AIOps adds AI-assisted analysis to help identify unusual behavior, correlate events across systems and suggest a likely cause or response. Agentic NetOps extends that approach toward software agents that can take actions toward assigned goals under configured controls.

These are distinct capabilities, not a single switch from manual operations to autonomy. An AI system that can identify an anomaly has not necessarily diagnosed it correctly; a plausible recommendation has not necessarily been validated; and execution does not establish that the network recovered as intended.

The four stages to evaluate
- Telemetry and detection: Collect relevant signals and identify deviations from expected behavior.
- Correlation and diagnosis: Connect events across devices or domains and suggest likely causes.
- Recommendation or change generation: Propose a response or produce a candidate configuration change.
- Execution and verification: Apply an approved action, check its actual effect, and stop or reverse it if the result is unsafe.
Capability at an earlier stage does not demonstrate reliable end-to-end autonomy. Teams need to establish what data the system sees, what it may change, how it explains its decisions, who approves actions and how operators can audit and reverse them.

What the 2026 evidence shows
The available figures describe forecasts, survey responses and expectations—not an audited count of successful autonomous deployments or proof of improved reliability. The studies differ in respondents and scope, so their percentages should not be treated as directly comparable.
| Source and evidence | Reported finding | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Gartner, forecast published September 18, 2024 | 30% of enterprises would automate more than half of their network activities by 2026. | A dated forecast about expected adoption, not confirmation that the target was reached. Gartner’s forecast |
| Dimensional Research surveys conducted in 2024 and 2025; reported in Broadcom’s 2026 State of Network Operations report | 92% planned to use AI-enabled networking solutions; 71% did not fully trust AI to make network operations decisions; 37% reported mature automation practices; 95% lacked visibility into network segments. | Survey findings from more than 1,350 IT professionals with networking, operations or cloud responsibilities—not a census or evidence that planned use became deployment. The report also identifies cloud and internet environments as visibility challenges. Broadcom and Dimensional Research report |
| Omdia survey of 1,000 IT and network operations leaders at organizations with 500 or more employees, summarized in Cisco’s September 23, 2026 announcement | 82% were comfortable with AI making at least some production network changes without prior approval; 84% expected an AI-led operating model within 12 months; 86% considered a single integrated platform the most effective path; 69% required detailed explainability for agent-driven actions. | Reported attitudes and expectations among survey respondents, not independently verified operational outcomes. The findings are Omdia research as summarized by Cisco. Cisco’s summary of Omdia’s survey |
| EMA survey of 458 IT professionals across North America and Europe, summarized by Broadcom on January 30, 2026 | 93% had allocated budgets for AI-driven NetOps; 35% reported complete success with AI-driven NetOps; 47% of users frequently encountered false or mistaken AI insights requiring human oversight. | Survey results reported in a Broadcom-hosted summary; they are not universal rates or a comparative product test. Broadcom’s summary of EMA research |
The contrast between willingness to allow some changes and demands for explainability is important: openness to autonomy does not mean operators want to surrender oversight. The reported visibility gaps, limited mature automation and mistaken insights also make broad claims of safe, network-wide agent action difficult to justify from these surveys alone.

Gartner’s January 2026 abstract, The Future of NetOps Is Agentic, argues that infrastructure and operations leaders should act to capture agent benefits safely. The accessible abstract supports that general direction; it does not establish a detailed implementation framework or measured outcomes.
What agentic operations should—and should not—mean
Agentic NetOps is a shift from software that mainly advises toward agents that can perform actions within assigned goals and controls. Omdia Chief Analyst Jim Frey described it this way in Cisco’s release: “The findings point to a broader shift from the advisory model of AIOps to agent-powered operations, AgenticOps, that can take action.” That describes a direction of travel, not proof that autonomous operation is reliable across networks or vendors.

Deterministic automation remains useful for repeatable work such as configuration consistency, routine policy application, compliance enforcement and established response workflows. AI-generated diagnoses and changes are different: their outputs need evaluation, and any permission to execute them should be bounded. Teams should define who owns the policy, who reviews exceptions, what evidence is logged and how an operator regains control.

- Visibility and data coverage: Does the system see the network segments and cloud or internet paths relevant to the service? Can it correlate evidence across domains, or is its view limited to selected devices and tools?
- Integration and scope: Does it fit the network, cloud and operational systems your teams actually use? An integrated platform may be an organizational preference, but that alone does not prove complete coverage or better outcomes.
- Explainability and audit: Can an operator inspect the evidence behind a diagnosis, the rationale for a proposed action, the action history and the result afterward? Can those details be retained for audit?
- Permission boundaries: Can permissions be limited by device, change type, impact, time window or approval policy? Can lower-risk actions be separated from changes that could disrupt service?
- Verification and recovery: Can the system check whether a change produced its intended result, halt further actions if it did not, and support a tested reversal?
- Accuracy monitoring: How will the team detect mistaken insights, evaluate performance as models or data change, and feed production outcomes into ongoing review?
A staged path from advice to bounded action
The following is a practical implementation approach, not a universal standard or a guarantee of success. Expand autonomy only when the team can observe the system’s decisions and verify their effects.
- Establish a measurable baseline. Record incident volume, time to diagnose, change failure rate and service impact for the workflows under consideration. Without a baseline, improvement claims are difficult to assess.
- Fix telemetry and workflow gaps. Confirm that the system can see the relevant network segments and that routine workflows are repeatable. Do not treat an AI-generated explanation as a substitute for missing operational visibility.
- Start in observation mode. Let the system detect, correlate and recommend without changing production. Have operators review where its insights are useful, mistaken or unsupported by available evidence.
- Test bounded actions outside production. Validate proposed changes in a lab or replay environment. Specify the permitted scope, expected result and failure conditions before enabling execution.
- Introduce approval gates in production. Require human approval for production changes while teams verify the system’s reasoning and outcomes. Log the evidence, decision, approver and post-change result.
- Expand selectively. Consider autonomous execution only for well-understood, limited-risk workflows with verification and recovery controls. Use canaries for changes that may affect availability, and ensure operators know how to stop or reverse an action.
What success should look like
Evaluate results against the baseline rather than against adoption intentions or the label “agentic.” Track whether diagnosis time, incident volume, change failure rate or service impact actually improves for the workflows in scope. Also review false or mistaken insights, approval overrides, failed verifications and reversals: these show where the system needs tighter boundaries or better data.
