Netrasemi has moved its edge-AI program beyond chip design: the Thiruvananthapuram startup says its 12nm NETRA A2000 has completed silicon bring-up and that engineering samples and development platforms are now being evaluated by selected customers. That is a meaningful step toward a product, but it is not the same as volume production. Netrasemi is targeting commercial production around 2027, while early surveillance and automotive trials remain the company’s route to design wins.

Who is Netrasemi?

Founded in 2020 by Jyothis Indirabhai, Sreejith Varma and Deepa Geetha, Netrasemi is a fabless semiconductor company based at TrEST Research Park in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, with an office reported at KINFRA Park. It designs silicon but depends on an external foundry for manufacturing. Its target markets include smart cameras, surveillance, industrial IoT, automotive systems, robotics, sensors and smart infrastructure. EE Times reported 83 employees in August 2025; a December 2024 report put the team at 61, so headcount depends on the date of measurement. EE Times and Moneycontrol provide those dated figures.

What “edge AI” means in this strategy

Edge AI runs inference on or near a device instead of sending all raw sensor data to a cloud server. For cameras and industrial equipment, local processing can reduce latency and bandwidth use, make response times more predictable and limit the amount of sensitive video leaving the site. Those benefits still depend on memory bandwidth, model support, thermal design and the quality of the complete software pipeline.

Netrasemi is not positioning these products as cloud-training processors. Its stated focus is constrained, real-time workloads such as video analytics, computer vision, sensor fusion and smart-device inference.

What Netrasemi means by “full-stack”

“Full-stack” is Netrasemi’s positioning, not a claim that it owns every layer from wafer fabrication to operating systems. The publicly described stack is:

Layer What is publicly described Status
Application architecture Designs aimed at vision, imaging and sensor workloads Netrasemi-developed positioning
Silicon IP Neural processing, computer vision, ISP, security and acceleration blocks Company-described in-house IP
SoCs Complete chips integrating processing, imaging, codecs, memory and I/O functions A2000 in customer evaluation; other products at earlier stages
Tools and software NETRA Edge Studio, compiler tools, drivers, SDK components and sample applications Existence reported; ecosystem breadth and adoption are not independently established
Manufacturing External wafer fabrication, including TSMC’s 12nm process for A2000 Foundry-dependent
Customer enablement Reference designs and application support for OEMs and ODMs Company’s intended engagement model

EE Times describes NETRA Edge Studio as a low-code/no-code development environment with precompiled models. Later coverage mentions sample applications, compiler tools, drivers and supporting software. There is not yet independent evidence that it matches the model coverage, documentation or community support of CUDA, TensorRT, Qualcomm AI Stack or major Linux embedded ecosystems.

NETRA A2000: the first silicon milestone

The A2000 is Netrasemi’s flagship edge-AI SoC. Reports describe a TSMC 12nm device with approximately 8 TOPS of AI performance, a neural-processing unit, vision-processing unit, image-signal processor, security functions and other acceleration blocks. It is intended for smart cameras, video-analytics gateways and edge-AI boxes, and supports H.264/H.265 video encode and decode according to the 2025 EE Times report. EE Times

In May and June 2026, Netrasemi reported that A2000 silicon had been brought up and that engineering samples and development platforms were entering selected-customer evaluations. Economic Times reported early surveillance and automotive trials. The company is targeting commercial production around 2027, with one report specifying mid-2027. EE Times’ 2026 report and Economic Times describe this stage.

Coral Dual Edge TPU Adapter for Coral m.2 Accelerator - M.2 2280 B+M Key PCIe x1 Gen2 Adapter Board with Mounting Screw
  • Designed exclusively for Coral M.2 Accelerator with Dual Edge TPU modules to maximize AI inference performance.
  • Fits standard M.2 2280 B-key or M-key slots (PCIe protocol only - not compatible with SATA M.2).
  • Bidirectional Gen2 bandwidth: Upstream: ×1 PCIe Gen2 (5Gbps) Downstream: Dual ×1 PCIe Gen2 lanes
  • Includes stainless steel mounting screw for vibration-resistant PCB fixation.
  • Explicitly incompatible with Raspberry Pi CM4/USB enclosures - prevents buyer errors.

“Brought up” means the design is functioning in manufactured silicon. It does not establish production yield, long-term reliability, pricing, certifications, software maturity or volume design wins. The A2000 is designed in India but manufactured on TSMC’s process; calling it “made in India” without explaining that distinction would be misleading.

R1000, A4000 and R4000: the roadmap

NETRA R1000

The R1000 is described as an AI-capable microcontroller-class SoC delivering about 1 TOPS. It uses a modified RISC-V core for efficiency and targets smart sensors and IoT devices. Netrasemi developed it with the College of Engineering, Trivandrum, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s Chips to Startup programme. Coverage in 2026 said fabrication had begun at TSMC’s 12nm node. EE Times

A4000 versus R4000

The naming is not settled. The 2025 EE Times article calls a future product A4000; the 2026 update refers to an R4000 chiplet-based processor. Economic Times describes an advanced edge-AI server chip called A4000 and says it was expected to become fabrication-ready in the second quarter of 2027. These could be renamed products or different variants, but Netrasemi has not publicly confirmed that they are identical.

Reported roadmap claims include higher performance than A2000, an in-house die-to-die interconnect, multi-die or chiplet scaling and up to approximately 100 TOPS. Those are roadmap targets, not verified shipping specifications. Economic Times

What “in-house IP” does—and does not—mean

Netrasemi says it designs reusable hardware blocks for AI and computer vision, optimized for low-light imaging, sensor fusion and edge inference. It describes A2000 as integrating its complete set of in-house IP, including the NPU, VPU, ISP, security and acceleration blocks. EE Times

PNY NVIDIA RTX A6000
  • NVIDIA Ampere Architecture-based CUDA Cores - Double-speed processing for single-precision floating point (FP32) operations and improved power efficiency provide significant performance improvements for graphics and simulation workflows, such as complex 3D computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE), on the desktop.
  • Second-Generation RT Cores - With up to 2X the throughput over the previous generation and the ability to concurrently run ray tracing with either shading or denoising capabilities, second-generation RT Cores deliver massive speedups for workloads like photorealistic rendering of movie content, architectural design evaluations, and virtual prototyping of product designs. This technology also speeds up the rendering of ray-traced motion blur for faster results with greater visual accuracy.
  • Third-Generation Tensor Cores - New Tensor Float 32 (TF32) precision provides up to 5X the training throughput over the previous generation to accelerate AI and data science model training without requiring any code changes. Hardware support for structural sparsity doubles the throughput for inferencing. Tensor Cores also bring AI to graphics with capabilities like DLSS, AI denoising, and enhanced editing for select applications.
  • Third-Generation NVIDIA NVLink - Increased GPU-to-GPU interconnect bandwidth provides a single scalable memory to accelerate graphics and compute workloads and tackle larger datasets.
  • 48 Gigabytes (GB) of GPU Memory - Ultra-fast GDDR6 memory, scalable up to 96 GB with NVLink, gives data scientists, engineers, and creative professionals the large memory necessary to work with massive datasets and workloads like data science and simulation.

That does not mean every component is invented internally. A fabless chip company can still rely on licensed processor architectures, standard interfaces, memory technology, packaging and testing partners, process-design kits, electronic-design-automation software and the foundry itself. “In-house” should therefore be read as ownership or internal development of key application IP, not total supply-chain independence.

Why build a complete SoC instead of an accelerator?

An accelerator alone does not solve the embedded-video system problem. A camera product also needs sensor input and synchronization, image processing, video compression and decompression, memory and I/O management, security and power control. Integrating those functions can reduce board-level component count and may improve latency, power or cost, but those benefits must be shown on complete customer systems rather than inferred from TOPS.

Netrasemi also describes a patented heterogeneous graph-stream parallel-processing architecture that runs multiple models concurrently with reduced cycle loss. The company says it is intended to preserve efficiency as models become more complex. Available coverage does not provide a patent number, independent benchmark or silicon-versus-simulation methodology. Important unanswered questions include supported operators, compiler graph representation, scheduling under memory contention and performance against GPU, NPU or DSP alternatives.

Security and power claims need deployment evidence

The company says its designs include secure boot, a chain of trust through runtime, hardware firewalls, firmware-integrity protection, power gating, domain-specific power-management units and software-controlled pipeline bypassing. These features could matter in surveillance and industrial systems, including fanless or sealed enclosures.

Buyers should still ask for the threat model, hardware-root-of-trust details, key provisioning, lockable debug paths, side-channel protections, security standards, independent testing and typical and maximum power under representative workloads. No public evidence in the available coverage establishes a “best-in-class” security position.

India’s policy context

Netrasemi has been associated with MeitY’s Design Linked Incentive scheme and the Chips to Startup programme. EE Times reported that it was among the first four startups selected under DLI; Economic Times reported ₹15 crore of DLI support in 2023. These programmes support design and ecosystem development. They do not mean that A2000 wafers are fabricated in India or that one startup represents a complete domestic semiconductor supply chain.

Netrasemi describes A2000 as India’s first indigenous AI SoC. That superlative depends on the definition of “indigenous”—Indian-designed, fabricated domestically, commercially available, production-ready or compared with academic prototypes—so it should remain attributed to the company rather than presented as an independently settled fact. Netrasemi

Commercial reality: from working silicon to volume deployment

For an OEM, the meaningful sequence is engineering sample, software integration, pilot, production qualification, volume manufacturing and sustained support. Netrasemi has publicly reported the first two and early customer trials; named high-volume production customers have not been established in the available reporting.

What could make the platform compelling

  • Lower total system cost than a CPU plus discrete accelerator.
  • Better performance per watt on real-time video workloads.
  • Strong ISP, codec and multi-camera integration.
  • Reliable model-porting, profiling and quantization tools.
  • Long-term software, security and product-lifecycle support.
  • Predictable supply, packaging, testing and warranty arrangements.

Risks a technical evaluation should test

  • Unsupported model operators or accuracy loss after quantization.
  • Memory bandwidth bottlenecks and thermal throttling in sealed products.
  • Sensor, codec, driver or Linux/RTOS compatibility gaps.
  • SDK updates lagging behind AI frameworks.
  • Low-volume pricing, foundry or packaging delays.
  • Pilots that do not convert into production orders.
  • Confusion over A4000 and R4000 product definitions.
  • Customer preference for established ecosystems despite theoretical efficiency advantages.

How it compares with established alternatives

Netrasemi’s proposition is an application-specific SoC and OEM co-development path. Buyers needing an immediately available developer platform may instead evaluate NVIDIA Jetson, while dedicated-accelerator designs can consider Hailo. Qualcomm offers broader integrated IoT and edge platforms through its IoT portfolio. None should be declared faster, cheaper or more efficient without matched workloads, precision, memory, software and power measurements.
