Yes—but first distinguish “my PC has no Bluetooth” from “I want to avoid Bluetooth.” A USB Bluetooth adapter fixes the first problem while still using Bluetooth. For a genuinely non-Bluetooth wireless connection, use the controller’s included 2.4GHz receiver, a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter, or a supported PlayStation adapter. If your controller has no receiver option, your practical choices are a USB data cable, a Bluetooth adapter, or a replacement controller.
The four ways to connect a controller
| Method | Wireless without Bluetooth? | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included 2.4GHz USB receiver | Yes | PC-focused third-party controllers | Usually paired to one model or controller family |
| Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows | Yes | Compatible Xbox Wireless Controllers | Does not work as a universal gamepad receiver |
| USB Bluetooth adapter | No—this adds Bluetooth | Bluetooth-only controllers and other peripherals | Still subject to Bluetooth pairing and interference |
| USB cable | No—it is wired | Reliable fallback, firmware updates and troubleshooting | Restricts movement; a charge-only cable will not carry controller data |
Microsoft lists a USB Bluetooth adapter as an option for PCs without built-in Bluetooth, while Xbox Wireless uses a separate proprietary wireless connection. See Microsoft’s Windows controller guidance and the Xbox Wireless technical documentation.
Identify your controller’s wireless standard
| Controller | Non-Bluetooth option | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows | Use an adapter compatible with the Xbox Wireless generation; ordinary Wi-Fi or generic 2.4GHz dongles are not substitutes |
| Xbox 360 wireless controller | Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows | It belongs to a different ecosystem from newer Xbox Wireless Controllers |
| DualSense | USB cable, or Bluetooth | Sony’s current Windows documentation establishes USB and Bluetooth, not a general-purpose official 2.4GHz adapter |
| DUALSHOCK 4 | Official DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor, where available | Older accessory with uncertain current availability; do not assume it supports DualSense |
| Third-party controller marked “2.4G” | Its included manufacturer receiver | Receiver pairing is normally model-specific |
| Bluetooth-only controller | USB Bluetooth adapter, USB cable or replacement controller | A generic 2.4GHz receiver cannot convert it |
Sony documents DualSense support on Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 through USB and Bluetooth at its DualSense guide. Sony separately documents the DUALSHOCK 4 adapter in this instruction manual.
Connect a 2.4GHz controller to Windows
- Plug the supplied receiver directly into a USB port. Avoid a hub while testing.
- Charge the controller fully or install fresh batteries.
- Set the controller to PC, 2.4G or XInput mode—not Bluetooth, Switch, Android or console mode.
- Turn it on and wait for the receiver and controller indicators to become steady, or for Windows to report that the device is ready.
- Confirm detection in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices or Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Open Windows’ game-controller panel and test every stick, trigger and button before launching a game.
Exact mode switches and pairing buttons vary by model. For example, 8BitDo’s Ultimate 2C instructions require Windows 10 version 1903 or later and specify the 2.4GHz PC setup at this manual. Its Xbox 3-mode instructions are at this page.

- Supports ultimate software - customize button mapping, adjust stick & trigger sensitivity, vibration control and create macros with any button combination.
Pair an Xbox controller with the Xbox Wireless Adapter
- Insert the compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter into USB.
- Press the adapter’s pairing button until its indicator flashes.
- Turn on the controller and hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Wait for both indicators to stop flashing.
- Test the controller in Windows, then launch a game with controller support.
If Windows does not install the adapter automatically, run Windows Update and inspect Device Manager. Reinstall the adapter through Windows rather than downloading drivers from an unofficial site. The adapter is for compatible Xbox Wireless controllers and accessories; it is not a receiver for PlayStation controllers, arbitrary Xbox-branded pads or third-party 2.4GHz controllers. Microsoft describes the controller’s Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth capabilities at Xbox.com.
Do not confuse Xbox generations
An Xbox 360 wireless controller needs an Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows. That receiver should not be presented as interchangeable with an adapter for Xbox Wireless Controllers used by newer Xbox generations. Check the label and exact model before buying hardware.

What to do with a Bluetooth-only controller
- Add a USB Bluetooth adapter: best if you only lack Bluetooth and also want to connect headphones, keyboards or mice. This remains a Bluetooth connection.
- Use a USB data cable: dependable for play, firmware updates and diagnosis. USB-C cables marked for charging only will not work for wired controller data.
- Replace the controller: choose a PC model that includes a 2.4GHz receiver if avoiding Bluetooth is essential.
Software alone cannot create a missing radio connection. Sony’s official PC guidance for DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 is available at PlayStation Support; it does not establish a current universal DualSense 2.4GHz adapter.
Fix a receiver that does not work
- Verify that the controller and receiver belong to the exact same model or supported family.
- Switch to the documented 2.4G/PC/XInput mode and power-cycle the controller.
- Use a motherboard USB port instead of a hub. If a USB 3.x port causes interference, try USB 2.0.
- Move the receiver away from the metal case and nearby USB 3.x devices with the supplied extension cable, if any.
- Recharge the controller or replace its batteries.
- Use the manufacturer’s firmware utility and follow its re-pairing procedure.
- Check Device Manager and Windows Update for driver problems.
When Windows sees it but the game does not
Windows detection and game support are separate. Xbox/XInput controllers are commonly recognized by PC games, but no game supports every controller. For a Steam game, open the game’s controller settings and enable or adjust Steam Input. A non-Steam game may need native support, a compatibility layer or manufacturer software.

| Your situation | Recommended route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already have a 2.4G PC controller and its receiver | Use the included receiver | Usually the simplest Bluetooth-free setup |
| You own a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows | Preserves Xbox-style Windows/XInput behavior and the dedicated Xbox Wireless protocol |
| Your controller is Bluetooth-only | USB Bluetooth adapter, USB cable or replacement | No generic 2.4GHz receiver can convert it |
| You want the easiest new PC purchase | Controller with an included 2.4GHz receiver | Avoids separate receiver shopping and Bluetooth pairing |
| You need maximum reliability or are troubleshooting | USB data cable | Removes radio pairing and interference from the equation |
As one current example, 8BitDo’s official shop listed the Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for PC at $29.99 USD when crawled in July/August 2026; price and stock can change: 8BitDo’s 2.4G controller collection. Other 8BitDo Xbox-focused models are listed at Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox and Ultimate 3E Controller for Xbox. Do not buy a listing that merely says “universal 2.4GHz receiver” unless it explicitly names your exact controller model.
