How a Netherlands VPN gives you a Dutch IP address
A VPN routes a connection through a VPN server. When you select a Netherlands exit server, a destination can see that server’s IP address rather than your ordinary public IP. Proton explicitly describes its Netherlands servers as an exit-point option for obtaining a Dutch IP. This establishes what the provider offers; it does not show that every geolocation database will classify every endpoint as Dutch, or that a particular website will accept it.

For example, Smart DNS Proxy lists an Amsterdam VPN endpoint. That listing confirms the provider names an endpoint in Amsterdam, not that an independent geolocation check has verified its IP or that streaming platforms currently accept it. Smart DNS Proxy server locations
What Smart DNS does—and does not do
Smart DNS is intended to help reach regional websites and media supported by the provider. SmartyDNS says its service authenticates customers using their IP address and may require them to validate their current IP. It also says Smart DNS does not change or hide that IP and does not encrypt traffic. If you need a Dutch IP for general browsing, a Smart DNS subscription is therefore not a substitute for a Netherlands VPN server.

Smart DNS access does not include a paid streaming subscription. SmartyDNS says customers must separately subscribe to paid media services. Check the provider’s current content list and setup instructions for your particular TV, console, phone, or computer before subscribing.
Which option should you choose?
Choose a VPN if the Dutch IP is the requirement
- Look for a VPN provider that currently lists Netherlands exit servers.
- Check its supported devices, privacy documentation, and the settings needed to route the apps or traffic you care about.
- For a particular website or streaming app, confirm current compatibility where possible; a server location alone is not proof of access.
Consider Smart DNS for supported content without changing your IP
- Confirm that the provider supports the specific service and device you intend to use.
- Understand the trade-off: the cited SmartyDNS service leaves your IP unchanged and does not encrypt traffic.
- Check whether you must validate your current IP and maintain a separate subscription to the media service.
Do not treat branded features as interchangeable
Product names can blur the distinction. NordVPN describes SmartDNS as a way to access streaming content on supported smart TVs, while its separate SmartPlay documentation describes a feature that works as part of a NordVPN connection. Why a Dutch VPN server may not unlock a service
Streaming platforms can detect and block VPN endpoints, and their rights and availability vary by country. VPN Nederland says a service may reject a VPN server and suggests trying another server; changing servers may help in some cases, but is not a guaranteed fix. Keep the goal precise: a VPN can provide an exit IP associated with the Netherlands, but that does not guarantee acceptance by a particular site or streaming app. Smart DNS access is likewise limited to the provider’s supported services and devices. No independent Dutch VPN-versus-Smart-DNS speed comparison or success-rate measurement is established by the cited sources, so avoid choosing on the assumption that one is universally faster or more reliable.
