The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is a capable 4K action camera with useful stabilization, front and rear touchscreens, strong battery potential, and waterproofing to 20 m without a housing. Its main trade-offs are mode restrictions—especially if you want high-frame-rate 4K and the strongest horizon correction at once—and runtime that varies sharply with recording settings. For deeper or extended underwater use, DJI’s rated waterproof case is the safer choice.
What the Action 5 Pro offers
DJI specifies a 1/1.3-inch sensor, a 155° field of view, and 4K recording in a 4:3 aspect ratio at up to 100/120 fps. The camera also has front and rear touchscreens, 64 GB of built-in storage (47 GB available), and a microSD slot supporting cards up to 1 TB. Those features make it flexible for action footage, vlogging, and short outings where carrying a card is inconvenient. DJI’s specifications list the supported modes and recommended card models.

Pros of the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
Waterproofing for ordinary supported use
DJI rates the camera for use to 20 m without a case, which is convenient for swimming and many water-sports situations. That rating is conditional: close the battery-compartment and USB-C covers fully, and tighten the glass lens cover. For extended underwater sessions or high water-impact pressure, DJI recommends its waterproof case, which carries a stated rating of 60 m. The listed options include RockSteady 3.0, RockSteady 3.0+, HorizonBalancing, and HorizonSteady. This gives you choices between smoothing motion and keeping the horizon level, but they do not all work with every resolution, aspect ratio, and frame rate. DJI’s mode table is the reference to check before planning a shot; electronic stabilization is unavailable in timelapse and slow motion. In particular, do not assume that the maximum 4K 4:3 frame rate and HorizonSteady can be combined. DJI’s specifications detail the supported combinations.

Useful built-in storage and screens
The 47 GB of available internal storage can cover some short sessions without a memory card, while microSD expansion up to 1 TB supports longer shoots. The front and rear touchscreens are practical when framing yourself or operating the camera from behind. For long days, select a card from DJI’s current recommended models rather than assuming every card will perform equally.
Battery life can be a strength
DJI advertises up to 240 minutes of recording, but that is a laboratory result under a specific setup: 25°C, 1080p at 24 fps, RockSteady on, Wi-Fi off, and the screen off. It is not a promise of four hours at 4K. Tom’s Guide reported 112 minutes in its own 4K/60p test in a 2026 roundup; that is a separate test with different conditions, not a direct contradiction of DJI’s figure. DJI’s product page gives the qualified maximum, and Tom’s Guide’s roundup reports its test result.

Cons and cautions
Headline video modes do not combine freely
The 4K 4:3 100/120 fps option is a specialized high-frame-rate mode, not a guarantee that all image formats and stabilization features remain available. If your priority is level horizons, check DJI’s supported combinations against the exact frame rate and aspect ratio you intend to use. That matters most when you are choosing settings before a ride, dive, or other shoot where you cannot easily repeat the action.
Water resistance has real limits
The 20 m caseless rating depends on properly closed covers and a tightened lens cover. DJI warns against hot springs, extreme underwater environments, and unknown or corrosive liquids; damaged seals or high-impact water can also change the risk. For deeper use or longer underwater sessions, follow the manual and use the rated case rather than treating the bare-camera rating as universal protection. Actual battery runtime depends on how you record
Higher-resolution and higher-frame-rate recording, active screens, wireless features, and conditions unlike DJI’s laboratory setup can reduce usable runtime. Plan around your intended settings and bring a charged spare for a long shoot; use the 4K/60p independent result as one publication’s test, not a guaranteed runtime for every user.
Current value depends on the deal
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup describes the Action 5 Pro as a value option after the Action 6 launch. That is a dated reviewer assessment, not proof that it is the best buy at today’s price. Regional pricing, stock, and a like-for-like comparison with the Action 6 are not established here, so compare current offers and included accessories before deciding.

Who should buy it?
- Good fit: You want a compact 4K camera for action or travel, value several stabilization choices, and appreciate usable internal storage and front/rear screens.
- Good fit with a card: You record long sessions or high-bitrate footage and want removable storage beyond the built-in 47 GB available.
- Use with care: You film underwater. The bare camera’s 20 m rating is conditional; deeper or extended sessions call for the rated case and adherence to DJI’s cautions.
- Compare before buying: You need a particular high-frame-rate mode with horizon correction, or you are choosing between the Action 5 Pro and the newer Action 6. Verify mode compatibility, runtime needs, water ratings, storage, current price, and included accessories rather than relying on a broad “better” claim.
Verdict
The Osmo Action 5 Pro’s strongest case is its combination of practical waterproofing, flexible stabilization, useful screens, and storage, alongside battery performance that can be good when settings are appropriate. Its drawbacks are manageable if you check mode combinations before shooting, treat battery figures as setting-dependent, and respect the limits of its water rating. Whether it is the right value now depends on the price and alternatives available where you live.
