Standard with ads costs less and still provides 1080p video for two simultaneous viewers, but it inserts commercials, excludes a small number of titles, and limits downloads more sharply. Premium is worthwhile when you have a 4K/HDR television, need four simultaneous streams or downloads on up to six devices, or want Netflix spatial audio.

Netflix plans at a glance
Netflix currently lists three consumer tiers in its comparison: Standard with ads, Standard and Premium. The former Basic tier has been discontinued. The table shows the entitlements Netflix displays; actual picture quality still depends on the program, your device, your screen and your internet connection.
| Plan | Ads and catalog | Simultaneous viewing | Maximum resolution | Download devices | Displayed US price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | Commercial breaks; a small number of titles may be unavailable because of licensing | 2 | 1080p Full HD | 2 | $8.99 per month — Netflix plan table accessed 2026 |
| Standard | No ads | 2 | 1080p Full HD | 2 | $19.99 per month — Netflix plan table accessed 2026 |
| Premium | No ads | 4 | 4K Ultra HD and HDR | 6 | $26.99 per month — Netflix plan table accessed 2026 |
“Simultaneous viewing” means the number of supported devices that can watch at the same time. It is not the number of devices on which you may sign in. The download-device column is also separate: it identifies how many devices may be authorized for downloads, not how many individual episodes or films each device can hold.

Which Netflix plan is best for you?
Choose Standard with ads for the lowest displayed price
Standard with ads is the least expensive displayed US option at $8.99 monthly. It is also a 1080p plan with two simultaneous streams, so the core video resolution and concurrent-viewing allowance match Standard. The trade-offs are commercial breaks, a small number of unavailable movies and shows, and stricter offline-download limits.
This tier fits a viewer who mainly watches at home, accepts advertising and does not depend on every title in Netflix’s catalog. It can also suit a two-person household that uses Full HD screens rather than a 4K television. Check device support before changing plans if Netflix runs on an older smart TV, Blu-ray player or streaming box.
Choose Standard for uninterrupted 1080p viewing
Standard costs $19.99 monthly in Netflix’s displayed US table. It removes advertising and the licensing-related title gaps associated with the ad experience while retaining 1080p Full HD and two simultaneous streams. Its two-device download allowance is the same as Standard with ads, but its offline limit is considerably higher: Netflix’s download guidance allows up to 100 active downloads per device on ad-free plans, subject to the plan’s device count.

For many homes, Standard is the practical middle ground. It is the right upgrade when ad breaks interrupt long films or series, when a particular title is unavailable on the ad tier, or when two people need a substantial offline library on phones or tablets without paying for Premium’s 4K and four-stream benefits.
Choose Premium for 4K, four viewers or six download devices
Premium is listed at $26.99 monthly. It is the only displayed tier with 4K Ultra HD and HDR, four simultaneous streams, downloads on up to six devices and Netflix spatial audio. Premium is most useful when those specific capabilities will be used: a compatible 4K/HDR display, a household with up to four concurrent viewers, or several phones and tablets that need offline access.
Premium’s higher resolution is an entitlement, not a guarantee that every title appears in 4K or HDR. The title must be mastered and delivered in that format, and your television, streaming device, app and network must support it. Netflix describes spatial audio as available on any device without additional equipment; headphones or speakers can improve the listening experience but are not a Premium requirement.

What the ad-supported plan changes
Commercial breaks
Standard with ads inserts advertising during viewing. The exact number and placement of commercials can vary by program and viewing session, so the plan should be considered ad-supported rather than a fixed number of minutes of advertising.
Some titles are locked
Netflix says a small number of movies and television shows are unavailable on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions. A lock icon or prompt identifies an affected title. This is a catalog limitation, not a temporary playback error; switching to an ad-free plan is the relevant remedy when that title is essential.
Older devices may not support the ad experience
Netflix warns that a few otherwise supported devices cannot be used with an ad-supported experience because their Netflix app or device software cannot be updated. This issue is separate from picture resolution. A television can be capable of 1080p yet still be unable to run the ad-tier software.
Before switching, update the Netflix app and the device firmware, then check whether the device appears on Netflix’s current supported-device information for the ad experience. If the device cannot receive the required update, use a newer streaming device connected to the television or watch through a supported phone, tablet, computer or smart-TV app.
Resolution, HDR and spatial audio explained
1080p on both Standard tiers
Standard with ads and Standard both list 1080p Full HD. Moving from the ad tier to Standard does not increase resolution; it changes advertising, catalog access and download rules. A Full HD television will therefore show no plan-based resolution improvement when moving between these two tiers.

4K Ultra HD and HDR on Premium
Premium raises the plan entitlement to 4K Ultra HD plus HDR. To see that quality, all of the relevant pieces must align:
Rank #3
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- The title must have a 4K and/or HDR version available.
- Your television or monitor must support the applicable 4K and HDR formats.
- Your streaming device and Netflix app must be compatible.
- Your connection must sustain the higher-quality stream without repeatedly falling back to a lower bitrate.
If any link in that chain is limited, Premium can still play the title, but the visible result may be below 4K or HDR. Plan resolution should therefore be treated as the maximum Netflix makes available, not a promise about every playback session.
Premium spatial audio
Netflix’s Premium announcement describes spatial audio as available on any device with no additional equipment required. It is an included audio feature, not a requirement to buy special headphones, a soundbar or an AV receiver. Optional audio hardware may change how the effect is heard, but it does not unlock the feature itself.
How simultaneous viewing works
Netflix lists two supported viewing devices for Standard with ads and Standard, and four for Premium. Those numbers apply to concurrent playback: two people can watch at once on either Standard tier, while up to four can watch at once on Premium.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSigning in on additional televisions, phones or computers does not automatically consume a simultaneous-viewing slot. The limit matters when playback overlaps. If a fifth person starts a stream on Premium, or a third person starts one on Standard, Netflix can display a message that too many people are watching. Stopping one of the existing streams frees a slot.
Concurrent viewing is also distinct from household rules. Netflix states that an account cannot be shared outside the household. A plan’s stream count is not permission to distribute an account among unrelated homes.
Downloads: devices versus titles
How many devices can download?
Standard with ads and Standard each support downloads on two devices. Premium supports downloads on six devices. The allowance is useful for choosing which phones, tablets or computers can be prepared for offline travel; it does not mean that only two or six titles may be saved.
Rank #4
- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group

How many titles can each device store?
Netflix’s download guidance gives different per-device limits:
- Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month.
- Ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads per device, subject to the plan’s download-device count.
The 15-download figure is a monthly total for each device, while the 100-download figure describes active downloads on ad-free plans. Neither figure changes the number of devices authorized by the plan. Downloads can also be subject to title-specific expiration or viewing restrictions inside the Netflix app.
Which plan suits offline viewing?
A single traveler who downloads a few episodes to one phone may find either Standard tier sufficient. A family preparing several phones and tablets for a trip benefits from Premium’s six-device allowance. If the family uses the ad tier, each authorized device also faces the 15-download-per-calendar-month limit, which can become restrictive when several people refresh large libraries.
Household rules and extra members
Netflix says an account cannot be shared outside the household. This rule applies regardless of whether the account has two or four simultaneous streams. People in the same household can use their permitted devices, but a stream allowance is not a substitute for separate accounts for people who live elsewhere.
In Netflix’s displayed US table, Standard can add one extra member and Premium can add up to two. Netflix notes that eligibility and pricing may vary by country or when the subscription is supplied through a package or add-on. The table does not establish an extra-member option for Standard with ads, so check the account’s local offer before relying on one.

Device compatibility checklist
Use this checklist before selecting a plan or upgrading a television:
Best Value
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Identify the screen’s native resolution. A 4K plan cannot make a 1080p panel display 4K detail.
- Check whether the television or streaming device supports HDR if Premium’s HDR capability matters to you.
- Update the Netflix app and device firmware, especially before choosing the ad-supported tier.
- Confirm that your streaming device can output the required resolution to the display; an older HDMI path can limit 4K or HDR.
- For downloads, install the current Netflix app on each phone or tablet and count how many devices need offline access.
- Check your local Netflix account page for the country-specific price, package restrictions and extra-member eligibility.
When an older smart TV cannot run the ad experience, an external, up-to-date streaming device is often the simplest way to retain that television while meeting the app requirement. The external device must itself support Netflix and the resolution you intend to use.
Common plan-selection mistakes
Paying for Premium without a 4K path
Premium’s 4K/HDR entitlement has little visible benefit if the television is Full HD, the title is not offered in 4K, or the playback chain cannot pass HDR. In that situation, choose Premium for its four streams, six download devices or spatial audio only if you genuinely need one of those features.
Assuming Standard with ads has the same catalog
The ad tier is not simply Standard at a lower price. Licensing restrictions leave a small number of titles unavailable, and commercials are part of playback. Verify that the programs your household watches most are available before downgrading.
Confusing download devices with download capacity
Two download devices does not mean two saved titles, and six download devices does not mean unlimited storage. Count both the number of devices and the per-device allowance, particularly the 15-download monthly limit on ad-supported plans.
Ignoring the country and billing channel
The dollar amounts in this article are the US figures Netflix displayed when accessed in 2026. Netflix says prices and extra-member eligibility can change by country and may differ when Netflix is provided through a package or add-on. Your account’s local plan page is authoritative for the amount you will be charged.
A practical decision path
- Need 4K/HDR, four simultaneous viewers or six download devices? Select Premium if your devices and titles support the desired quality.
- Need uninterrupted playback and the complete catalog in 1080p? Select Standard.
- Want the lowest displayed price and accept commercials, title locks and the 15-download monthly device limit? Select Standard with ads.
- Using an older smart TV? Confirm ad-tier software compatibility before choosing Standard with ads; update the device or plan to use a newer streaming device.
- Buying through a bundle? Review the bundle’s Netflix terms instead of assuming the direct US prices or extra-member rules apply.
The meaningful differences are therefore not just screen resolution. The ad tier trades price for advertising, a smaller catalog and tighter offline limits; Standard removes those interruptions while remaining 1080p; Premium adds 4K/HDR, four concurrent streams, six download devices and spatial audio for households equipped to use them.
