If Netflix plays on your iPhone but the projected video turns black, AirPlay or Screen Mirroring is usually the first thing to check: Netflix no longer supports either for playback from iPhone or iPad. Stop mirroring and try a compatible wired video connection, or run Netflix directly on a supported streaming device connected to the projector. The right fix also depends on your iPhone port, Netflix plan, projector input and HDCP support.
Why won’t Netflix play on my projector from my iPhone?
Netflix does not support AirPlay or Screen Mirroring for iPhone and iPad playback. Your phone’s menus may appear on the projector while the video itself goes black, or Netflix may show an error when playback starts. A different adapter or projector does not make Netflix AirPlay-compatible. For iPhone-to-projector playback, check whether a wired digital video path is supported; otherwise, use a Netflix-ready streaming device attached to the projector.
Why is my Netflix screen black when I mirror my iPhone?
Screen mirroring can show the iPhone interface without delivering protected Netflix video. Netflix states, “Airplay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported by Netflix.” If the image goes black as a title starts, turn off mirroring and test a supported wired connection instead. Do not treat the black screen alone as proof that the projector is defective.

Which iPhone adapter works with Netflix on a projector?
Choose based on the iPhone’s physical connector, then confirm the exact model supports wired video output. The adapter connects to the phone; the projector must also accept the resulting video signal, usually through HDMI.

Apple says a Digital AV or VGA adapter can connect an iOS device to a projector, but protected films, shows and streaming apps may require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. Apple’s adapter support page was published November 5, 2024. VGA does not carry audio, so a VGA setup may need a separate audio connection. Could my Netflix plan cause the projector error?
Yes. Netflix says watching on a TV from a mobile device is unavailable with an ad-supported experience or a Mobile plan. Its “The connected display is not supported. (10065)” guidance says the error can relate to the viewing plan or the output method. Check the plan and terms shown in your current Netflix account rather than relying on an old plan name or price. Netflix: “The connected display is not supported. (10065)”.
How to troubleshoot a wired iPhone-to-projector connection
- Turn off AirPlay and Screen Mirroring. Disconnect mirroring, then retry using a wired adapter or direct playback from a supported streaming device.
- Confirm the iPhone and adapter. Match Lightning or USB-C to the appropriate adapter, verify the adapter model where applicable, and check the iPhone’s specifications for wired video output support.
- Select the projector’s correct input. Use the projector’s input/source control to choose the HDMI or other input where the adapter is connected. If available, try another projector input.
- Check the protected-video connection. For USB-C video, Netflix says the cable or adapter must support HDCP 2.2. Apple notes that protected streaming content can require an HDCP-compatible digital connection. An HDMI connection that passes menus or other content is not, by itself, confirmation that the complete setup supports protected Netflix playback.
- Reconnect and simplify the cable path. Unplug and reconnect the adapter and cable, reverse the cable ends, and remove extension cables or converters. Apple also recommends checking the cable and keeping iOS up to date. Try the adapter and cable with another compatible display, or the projector with another compatible source, if available.
- Check the audio path separately. If video appears but sound does not, note that VGA carries no audio; use an audio-capable connection or a separate audio route.
These checks help isolate whether the problem is the phone, adapter, cable, projector input or protected-video compatibility; a failed test does not identify a defective component by itself. Netflix also provides guidance for black-screen playback and the AVF:11870;OS:61001; error.

Can I play Netflix directly on the projector instead?
Potentially. If your plan supports TV playback, Netflix advises using the Netflix app on a Netflix-ready TV or streaming device. A separate streaming device connected to the projector’s HDMI input avoids iPhone AirPlay, but confirm that the device supports Netflix, the projector accepts its output, and the plan is eligible before choosing this route. Netflix lists Chromecast (3rd generation or older without a physical remote), Google Nest Hub smart displays, and select cast-enabled Vizio and Compal TVs as compatible cast targets; that list does not mean a projector with wireless mirroring is a supported Netflix target.
