Instead of selecting each show from a library, you tune in to a channel’s current scheduled program. You do not need a traditional cable feed for that service, but you do need internet access and a device it supports.
What does live TV streaming mean?
Live TV streaming is the internet delivery of television programming as a live or linear channel stream. A channel follows a schedule, so you watch the program that is airing when you tune in. You may join after it has started rather than beginning automatically at the opening.

In the United States, one common form is a paid package of streaming channels. Free, ad-supported services also offer linear channels, and some services combine live channels with a library of on-demand shows and movies. “Live TV streaming” describes how programming is delivered; it does not guarantee one price or business model.
How is live TV different from on-demand streaming?
| Viewing type | How you watch |
|---|---|
| Live or linear TV | You tune in to a channel’s current program, which follows a schedule. |
| On-demand video | You choose a particular title and start it when you want. |
A service can provide both. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs) as offering consumers a package of streaming linear channels. That is useful regulatory terminology for a channel-package model, not a universal consumer definition of every live video service. The FCC also distinguishes linear channels from on-demand categories in its 2024 notice.

Do you need cable to stream live TV?
No. A live-streaming service delivers its channels over the internet, so you do not need a traditional cable feed for that service. You still need a broadband connection and a device compatible with the service’s app or website. A streaming stick is one possible way to connect a television, not a requirement if you already have a supported smart TV, computer, phone, tablet, or other device.
For a concrete U.S. example, Hulu lists computers, mobile devices, and select connected-TV platforms, including some Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices. Its Hulu + Live TV page says a compatible device and high-speed broadband are required. Those are provider-specific requirements, not a universal speed specification for all services. Hulu’s additional terms also note that HD playback or concurrent streams may need more bandwidth and that streaming may count toward data usage. Check your provider’s current device and connection requirements.

What does the legal terminology mean?
U.S. law defines “video programming” as programming provided by, or generally considered comparable to programming provided by, a television broadcast station. That statutory definition appears in Title 47, Section 522 of the U.S. Code; it is legal context, not a complete plain-language definition of live TV streaming.
Likewise, the FCC’s vMVPD description refers to packages of streaming linear channels. It helps explain one category of service, but should not be read as establishing that every internet-based live video service falls into the same legal category.
