The control used to open the menu depends on your device, and Netflix can show only tracks offered for that title.
Turn on captions while watching
- Open Netflix and start a show or movie.
- Reveal the playback controls using the input for your device: tap or click the screen on a phone, tablet, or computer; press the up or down arrow on most TVs, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, game consoles, and streaming players; or swipe up or press the up arrow on an Apple TV remote.
- Select Audio & Subtitles. On some TVs, language options appear along the bottom of the screen without that icon. If you see Other, select it to view additional language choices.
- Choose the subtitle or closed-caption track you want.
Netflix’s controls can vary by device and model. Its general instructions are available in Netflix’s guide to subtitles, captions, and audio languages.

Choose between subtitles and closed captions
Subtitles generally show dialogue as readable text. Closed captions can also describe sounds, such as music or other audio cues. Netflix identifies titles with an SDH badge when checking a title’s details; SDH tracks may not be available for every season or episode. If SDH is unavailable, another subtitle track may show dialogue without sound descriptions.

If captions or language options are missing
- Check the title’s tracks: Open Audio & Subtitles during playback and review the options offered for that title. Netflix cannot add a language or caption track that is not listed.
- Check the episode or season: Caption and SDH availability can vary across episodes and seasons of the same show.
- Look for the SDH badge: If you want descriptions of sounds as well as dialogue, check the title details for SDH. A standard subtitle track may not include sound context.
- For a download, review the two displayed languages: Downloaded titles show only the two most relevant languages in the selector, so their list may be shorter than the options available when streaming.
Change caption appearance
Netflix offers settings for caption font, size, shadow, and background color, but the path and available controls depend on your device, language, and location. Netflix’s appearance guide gives device-specific instructions.
In a web browser
- Open the Netflix Account page.
- Under Profiles, choose a profile.
- Select Subtitle appearance, choose the settings, and save.
- Reopen Netflix to see the changes. If they have not appeared on a TV or streaming device, Netflix advises using Settings → Get Help → Reload.
On a TV or streaming device
Pause the title, open the player controls, and look for Settings to adjust Size and Style. If that option is absent, the device does not support appearance changes for that language. Connected TVs may offer fewer styling choices than a browser.

On an Android phone or tablet
Go to My Netflix → your profile name → Manage Profiles → choose a profile → Subtitle Appearance. Netflix says changes made in the Android app apply only to titles played on that Android device.
On Apple devices
Netflix directs Apple-device users to Apple Support for device-specific caption appearance guidance. Settings can also be unavailable in some countries where Arabic or Hebrew is the primary language, on older devices, or for certain languages on TVs. Do you need extra equipment?
No. If you already watch Netflix on a supported device, captions are enabled through the player’s built-in menu. Headphones, hearing aids, headsets, and neck loops may help with listening, but they are not required to turn captions on.
