Varying three display primaries can create patterns of cone activity that the brain perceives as many colors—even though those primaries do not have to line up with cone sensitivity peaks or reproduce the exact spectrum of the scene.
What do the eye’s three cone classes do?
In bright-light, or photopic, vision, color signals begin mainly with three classes of cone photoreceptors: S, M and L, named for their relative sensitivity to short, medium and long wavelengths. Cones contain photopigments that absorb light and start a process called phototransduction. The visual system then processes signals from the cones to produce color perception. NCBI Bookshelf and a review in Nature Reviews Neuroscience describe this cone-based system.

The familiar labels “blue,” “green” and “red” are rough shorthand, not a map of one cone to each named color. Cone sensitivity curves overlap: light at a given wavelength can affect more than one class, and an L cone is not a dedicated red detector. Color depends on the pattern of activity across cone classes and how the visual system interprets it, rather than on a single cone identifying a color by itself. A technical treatment of cone sensitivities discusses both standard and individual variations: Formulae for generating standard and individual human cone spectral sensitivities.

A display emits light from three channels labeled red, green and blue. By changing each channel’s intensity, it changes the combined light reaching the eye and, in turn, the relative stimulation of the cone classes. The display does not send separate signals to three corresponding proteins: every primary can stimulate multiple cone classes, and the visual system processes the resulting signals together. RGB works as a practical way to generate many useful cone-response combinations, not because its primaries precisely match the three cone sensitivity peaks. Cambridge in Colour’s color-perception tutorial explains the relationship between display primaries and perceived color.

This also corrects a common premise behind the question “Why use RGB if it does not match the spectral sensitivity peaks?” A one-to-one match is unnecessary. What matters for a perceived match is the pattern of responses across the cone classes, not whether a display primary sits at a cone’s peak sensitivity.
How can a screen show a color without reproducing its spectrum?
Light from a real object or scene can have a different spectral distribution from light emitted by a display, yet both can produce similar cone responses and look alike to a standard trichromatic observer. Such perceptual matches between different spectra are called metamers. A screen can therefore represent a color without emitting the same full spectrum as the light from the scene it depicts. An overview of color and technology is available from the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists.

This is why saying a display “tricks” the eye can be a useful metaphor, but it is not literal physiology. The screen supplies light; cones absorb some of it and begin phototransduction; downstream visual processing produces the percept. The display is creating a color match for the visual system, not making three proteins independently “fire” in a prescribed ratio.
Why don’t RGB color matches work identically for everyone?
People can differ in cone spectral sensitivities and in ocular filters that affect the light reaching the retina. As a result, the same mix of display primaries may not produce precisely the same color match for every observer. Differences can be more apparent with narrow-band primaries. A paper indexed by PubMed examines the importance of individual differences in cone sensitivities and color-matching functions.

Three cone classes describe the usual starting point for human bright-light color vision, not an assertion that every person has exactly three normally functioning classes. Color-vision deficiencies and individual variation affect how color is perceived. In dim light, rods contribute more strongly and color discrimination is reduced; the three-cone explanation applies most directly to photopic vision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can an RGB screen reproduce every visible color?
No. A particular display is constrained by the spectra and operating range of its three primaries, so it can reproduce only a subset of visible colors. RGB is a useful method for producing many color matches, not a guarantee that a screen can represent every color a person can see. The exact range depends on the display; the sources cited here do not establish specifications for any particular model.
