Netflix offers an in-player brightness control on Android phones, iPhones, and iPads. TVs likewise use their own picture controls. HDR is a separate playback and display setting, not a substitute for ordinary brightness.
Where to change Netflix brightness
| Where you watch | Ordinary brightness control | Netflix player slider |
|---|---|---|
| Android, iPhone, or iPad app | Netflix player slider or the device’s brightness control | Available |
| Computer web browser | Computer or monitor’s own display controls | Unavailable |
| TV or streaming device | TV/device picture controls; consult its manual or manufacturer | Unavailable on TV displays |
Netflix explicitly says its brightness setting is unavailable in web browsers and on TV displays. The device still has its own brightness controls; their location depends on the computer, monitor, TV, or streaming device. Netflix’s dark-picture guidance and mobile playback instructions explain the distinction.

Adjust brightness in the Netflix mobile app
- Start playing a show or movie on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad.
- Tap the screen to show the playback controls.
- Move the brightness indicator up or down. You can also adjust the device’s general brightness using its usual system control.
Netflix also documents an HDR Playback option in app settings for eligible users with a Premium plan and an HDR-compatible device. That option is conditional and concerns HDR playback, not the same in-player brightness slider. Check Netflix’s current guidance for availability on your device.
Adjust brightness on a computer
For Netflix in a browser, change the computer’s display brightness using the operating system’s display controls or the monitor’s physical/on-screen controls. There is no universal Windows or macOS menu path that applies to every computer and display, so use the instructions for your model rather than looking for a Netflix-player setting.

If the image seems wrong specifically during HDR playback, check that the computer and display support HDR and that HDR is configured appropriately. These requirements do not create a Netflix brightness slider:
Mac HDR playback
Netflix’s Mac HDR requirements call for the latest Safari, a compatible Mac with an HDR-capable display, macOS Catalina 10.15.4 or later, and supported HDR settings. Connected cables or adapters must also support HDR. The instructions refer to the Apple XDR Display preset or High Dynamic Range option and to turning off “Optimize video streaming while on battery.” These are HDR playback conditions; menu labels and requirements may change.

Windows HDR playback
Netflix’s Windows HDR requirements include Windows 11 with current updates, a supported browser or Netflix app, compatible graphics hardware, and an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled. Some Windows devices may require a separately purchased HEVC extension for HDR or Ultra HD playback. That extension is a playback-format requirement, not a brightness control.

Adjust brightness on a TV or streaming device
Use the TV’s or device’s picture settings for ordinary brightness. Menus differ by manufacturer and model, so Netflix directs viewers to the TV/device manual or manufacturer support for the exact steps.
Some Premium-plan, HDR-compatible TV setups expose an HDR On/Off option in Netflix’s help/video menu. Netflix notes that not every compatible TV shows this toggle. HDR is distinct from brightness, and turning it off is not guaranteed to make every picture brighter; treat it as a relevant setting to check when HDR content looks too dark, not as a universal fix. See Netflix’s guidance for the current details.

If Netflix still looks too dark
- Use the brightness control for the viewing setup: the Netflix slider on supported mobile apps, or the display’s own controls on a computer or TV.
- If HDR is involved, check the relevant HDR setting and compatibility for that device. HDR availability depends on the hardware and system configuration.
- If the picture remains too dark, Netflix advises contacting its support team through the dark-picture help page.
For Windows playback symptoms such as static or glitches, Netflix has separate video troubleshooting steps involving refresh rate and monitor connections. Those steps address particular display/playback problems; they are not brightness controls.
