NetApp vs. Dell PowerStore: Which Enterprise Storage Platform Fits Your Workloads?

NetApp ASA, AFF, and Dell PowerStore serve different storage roles. Compare the exact models, supported protocols, recovery design, and workload results before deciding.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no evidence-based winner between “NetApp” and Dell PowerStore without specifying the array and workload. NetApp ASA is positioned for block storage, while NetApp AFF is presented as a broader ONTAP platform for block, file, and object management. Dell PowerStore is a family of unified NVMe systems supporting block, file, and VMware vVol workloads. The practical choice depends on the exact models, protocols, recovery needs, operating environment, and like-for-like commercial terms.

Start with the exact products—not the brand names

“NetApp” is not a single array to compare with PowerStore. NetApp’s cited comparison with Dell addresses ASA A-Series, and its separate ASA C-Series material covers that family. AFF is a distinct product line with broader ONTAP positioning. A decision framed simply as “NetApp vs. PowerStore” can therefore compare unlike systems before the evaluation even begins.

Dell PowerStore is also a family rather than one fixed configuration. Model, protocols, media, ports, and deployment characteristics can vary. Dell’s current product specifications and deployment guidance should be checked for the exact system being quoted. The comparison below reflects the product positioning in vendor materials, not a head-to-head performance test.

How the platforms differ by workload and capability

Decision area NetApp ASA NetApp AFF Dell PowerStore What to verify
Product positioning ASA A-Series is described by NetApp as block-optimized and ONTAP-powered. NetApp’s competitive material also discusses ASA capabilities. NetApp presents AFF as an ONTAP platform for block, file, and object management. Dell presents PowerStore as a unified NVMe platform for block, file, and VMware vVol workloads. Compare specific models and intended workload roles, not family names alone.
Protocols NetApp’s ASA comparison mentions NVMe/TCP. The cited AFF page describes ONTAP use across workload types; it does not establish every protocol supported by a particular model and release. Dell’s PowerStore T page lists FC, NVMe/FC, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP, NFS, and SMB, with protocol versions specified by Dell. Confirm exact protocol and version support, host interoperability, and any configuration constraints for the quoted system.
Architecture and scaling NetApp describes ASA A-Series as all-NVMe and scale-out; scale claims are vendor statements. The cited AFF page positions the family around ONTAP; it does not provide a directly comparable scaling test against PowerStore. Dell describes end-to-end NVMe, active-active dual controllers, clustering, and model-dependent performance. Check current node and capacity limits, expansion path, workload placement, and failover behavior in technical documentation for the selected configuration.
Data protection NetApp materials promote ONTAP snapshots and ransomware protection; some claims are specific to the competitive material or ASA C-Series. NetApp presents ONTAP as supporting hybrid-cloud data management; confirm the features and licensing applicable to the chosen AFF configuration. Dell describes local, remote, and cloud-based protection, as well as metro replication with automatic failover. Map required recovery time and recovery point objectives to topology, immutable copies, application consistency, and tested recovery procedures.
Efficiency and availability claims Not established as directly comparable in the cited materials. NetApp publishes product-family efficiency guarantees with differing figures and workload categories. Dell product material describes data-reduction guarantees that may differ by model or current program, as well as design availability claims. Review the contractual scope and assumptions. Do not treat vendor guarantees as independent workload benchmarks.
Operations ONTAP is presented as unified management across NetApp systems and cloud services. ONTAP is presented as a common management foundation across NetApp systems and cloud services. Dell says required storage and management software is included for PowerStore and describes non-disruptive upgrades. Assess staff skills, automation, support model, lifecycle terms, and migration effort in your own environment.

Which system is a better fit for a particular workload?

Block-focused storage

Evaluate ASA when the requirement is primarily block storage and ONTAP capabilities are important to the design. NetApp’s ASA positioning is block-optimized, and its competitive comparison mentions NVMe/TCP. Confirm that the exact ASA model and software release support the host connectivity and operational features your applications require.

Mixed workload management with ONTAP

Evaluate AFF when the goal is to manage block, file, and object workloads within NetApp’s broader ONTAP approach. That positioning does not establish that every AFF model, protocol, or feature is interchangeable; check the intended configuration and current documentation.

Unified block and file, including VMware vVols

PowerStore merits evaluation where its unified block-and-file capabilities and VMware vVol support match the design. For PowerStore T, Dell lists FC, NVMe/FC, iSCSI, NVMe/TCP, NFS, and SMB. Verify the relevant protocol versions and interoperability for the exact system and release rather than assuming that a family-level list guarantees support in every configuration.

Databases and other performance-sensitive applications

The cited sources do not establish which platform is faster for a given database or application. Vendor architecture descriptions and performance claims are not substitutes for testing representative data, I/O patterns, concurrency, and protection settings. Compare the systems under the conditions that matter to the application, including during expected failover and recovery events.

Compare protection and operating requirements against recovery objectives

Feature names alone do not show whether a system will meet a recovery objective. Translate each application’s requirements into a design and test plan: how much data loss is acceptable, how quickly service must return, what must be protected from deletion or ransomware, and whether recovery must preserve application consistency.

Do not compare efficiency guarantees as if they were benchmark results

NetApp and Dell publish efficiency and availability claims with different product scopes and terms. NetApp’s AFF page lists family-level efficiency guarantees across workload categories; Dell’s product material describes data-reduction guarantees that may depend on model or program, alongside design availability statements. The cited evidence does not provide a common workload, measurement method, or matched contractual scope that makes those figures directly comparable.

For capacity planning, model the customer’s data and expected reduction using the same assumptions for both vendors. Separate raw from usable capacity, account for protection and growth, and ask each supplier to document the guarantee’s eligibility, exclusions, measurement method, and remedy in the proposed contract. Treat availability statements similarly: establish exactly what is covered and what architecture and operating conditions are required.

A practical evaluation before choosing

  1. Define the candidate systems. Record the NetApp family and model (ASA or AFF), the PowerStore model, the deployment mode, and the software versions under consideration.
  2. Map application requirements. For each workload, document protocols, host and hypervisor compatibility, capacity, performance behavior, data-protection needs, and recovery objectives.
  3. Run representative tests. Use realistic data, I/O patterns, concurrency, and protection policies. Include the operational scenarios that could affect performance or availability, and record the test conditions so results are comparable.
  4. Validate the design with current technical documents. Check protocol versions, interoperability, expansion limits, clustering or failover behavior, and feature prerequisites for the exact system and release.
  5. Exercise recovery. Test the intended local, remote, or cloud recovery path and measure whether application-level objectives are met.
  6. Request equivalent quotes. Compare usable capacity, support, licensing, protection, expansion, lifecycle terms, and migration costs—not just array purchase price or a reduction ratio.
  7. Review operational fit. Consider the team’s ONTAP or Dell experience, automation, monitoring, upgrade process, support escalation, and the cost of moving existing data and workflows.

Conditional recommendation

Put ASA on the shortlist for block-focused requirements where its ONTAP approach fits. Put AFF on the shortlist when broader ONTAP management across workload types is central. Put PowerStore on the shortlist when its unified NVMe model, supported protocols, deployment characteristics, and Dell operational fit align with the design. Choose only after model-specific compatibility checks, representative workload testing, recovery validation, and comparable commercial proposals; the available vendor descriptions do not support declaring one platform universally superior.
