AI toys are not risk-free, and no single age label or safety feature answers whether one is right for a child. A 2026 Common Sense Media assessment found harmful or unsuitable responses, privacy and security concerns, and technical problems in the three conversational toys it tested. Common Sense Media recommends avoiding AI toys for children age 5 and under and urges caution for ages 6–12. That is the organization’s advice—not a legal age limit, pediatric consensus, or verdict on every AI toy.
What counts as an AI toy—and what has been assessed?
An AI toy is a physical toy—such as a stuffed animal, doll, robot, or voice-activated device—that uses AI to converse with a child. Many connect to the internet and use voice recognition. Depending on how they work, they may collect information while a child plays at home.

Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute assessment, updated January 22, 2026, examined Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3. Researchers tested voice interactions, reviewed privacy policies and data practices, considered developmental fit and parental controls, and assessed content safety and technical performance. The assessment focused on conversational toys with voice interaction; it did not cover traditional electronic toys without AI or screen-based AI products. Its results should not be generalized to every toy or treated as a current ranking of the whole market.
What can go wrong during a conversation?
In Common Sense Media’s tests of those three products, 27% of AI-toy outputs were judged inappropriate for children. The assessment describes examples involving self-harm, drugs, mature topics, inappropriate boundaries, risky advice, and unsafe roleplay. This is a result from that assessment’s tested interactions—not a rate for all AI toys, all conversations, or every child’s experience.

The same assessment found voice-recognition problems, inappropriate activations, and inaccurate responses. A toy can misunderstand a child, answer confidently but incorrectly, or produce a response that does not fit the child’s age. The presence of content guardrails does not mean every interaction will stay within them.
Common Sense Media’s January 2026 press release also reported that, in its parent poll, 83% of surveyed parents expressed at least moderate concern about AI toys collecting personal information, 80% were at least moderately concerned about cybersecurity risks, and 79% were concerned about difficulty setting limits on children’s use. These are reported poll findings, not measures of how often a toy is actually compromised or causes harm.

How should parents interpret age guidance?
Common Sense Media recommends that children age 5 and under not use AI toys and urges caution for ages 6–12. The organization’s concern is that young children may have difficulty distinguishing an AI system from a real person while forming ideas about trust and relationships. It also raises concerns about companion-style designs and the possibility of displacing human interaction. These points are developmental concerns behind the organization’s guidance, not a universal medical or legal rule.

Do not rely on the package age label alone. Common Sense Media notes that some toys labeled 13+ may still have cuddly, colorful designs or marketing that appeal to younger children. Consider the actual conversation style and features, how the product is presented, its data practices, and the individual child’s maturity and needs. A toy that markets itself as a friend or confidant raises different questions from one that offers a narrowly defined play activity.

What to check before buying or allowing play
Read the product’s privacy information and terms rather than assuming an age label or child-friendly packaging settles the data questions. The FTC advises parents to investigate the product and company, look for complaints and security or privacy information, check for recalls, inspect microphones and cameras, review parental controls, and understand how information is collected, stored, shared, accessed, and deleted.
- Sensors and listening: Does the toy have a microphone, camera, or other sensor? What starts recording or listening, and can a child or adult see when it is active?
- Information collected: Does play generate voice recordings, transcripts, account details, location data, or behavioral data? Do not assume the toy only processes what is needed for a reply.
- Retention and access: Where is data stored, how long is it kept, who can access it, and with whom is it shared?
- Parent access and deletion: Can a parent review and delete recordings or other child data? Are controls available during setup and later use?
- Physical control: Can listening or connectivity be switched off on the device itself? Is there a clear indicator when listening or recording is active?
- Security and upkeep: Does the company explain how data is protected in transit and storage? Is information available about security issues, updates, complaints, or recalls?
- Conversation boundaries: How does the toy handle sensitive prompts, unsafe roleplay, or a child asking for help? Treat vague assurances about safeguards as different from clear information about how the toy behaves.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) warns that connected toys can affect privacy when they gather data in a child’s home without adequate transparency or safeguards, including through passive listening or sharing information across a device network. Its Children’s Code materials emphasize clear information at purchase and setup, defaults suitable for children, explanations of data use when relevant, and visible collection.

The ICO’s connected-toy design guidance identifies technical measures such as encryption in transfer, protection against unauthorized access or microphone takeover, visible recording or collection indicators, a clear signal when listening mode is active, and an easy way to switch listening or collection off. The ICO says this guidance is under review following changes made by the Data (Use and Access) Act; consult the live regulator guidance for its current status. It is guidance for providers, not certification that a particular toy is safe.

United States
FTC consumer guidance says that when a toy collects personal information from a child under 13, the company has to tell parents about its privacy practices, ask for consent, and provide a right to have the child’s personal information deleted. This is a summary of the FTC’s consumer guidance, not a complete account of every legal issue, and it should not be assumed to apply identically outside the United States.

The ICO’s Children’s Code materials address connected devices likely to be accessed by children and expectations around data handling, transparency, and security. Its connected-toy page currently says the guidance is under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act. These materials are regulator guidance, not an exhaustive legal opinion; the exact obligations depend on the circumstances.
How to compare two AI toys fairly
There is no universal safest model established by the available assessment. If you are comparing products, use the same questions for each rather than treating a brand name, age label, or a single safety claim as decisive.
| Compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Age and interaction design | Compare the stated age range with the marketing, conversation style, companion framing, and the child’s needs. |
| Microphone and listening | Find out when listening starts, whether activity is visibly indicated, and whether an adult can disable it on the device. |
| Data practices | Identify what is collected, how long it is retained, where it is stored, who can access it, whether it is shared, and how it can be deleted. |
| Parent controls | Check which controls are available during setup and ongoing use, and whether they are practical to use. |
| Security and updates | Look for clear information about protecting data in transit and storage, preventing unauthorized access, and maintaining the product. |
| Content and reliability | Look for information about handling sensitive prompts, unsafe roleplay, inaccurate replies, and voice-recognition problems. |
| Value to the child | Ask whether the AI feature adds a worthwhile play experience for this child relative to the data and relationship trade-offs. |
Common Sense Media’s assessment includes three products, but it does not establish a universal safest choice or a current comparative ranking. Grem, Bondu, and Miko 3 are examples in a risk assessment, not endorsements.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What if the toy is already at home?
- Review its privacy information and settings. Find out what it collects and what controls exist before letting the child use it.
- Set up parent controls and data choices. Where available, review collection, sharing, retention, access, and deletion options rather than leaving defaults unquestioned.
- Show the child the listening control. Explain when the toy can hear them, what its indicator means, and how to stop listening or disconnect it if the device allows this.
- Stay involved in play. Pay attention to how the toy responds, whether it invites private or dependent behavior, and whether a child treats its answers as authoritative.
- Stop use if a response or feature concerns you. Use the device controls to disable listening or connectivity, and review the company’s process for deleting collected information.
Traditional toys, books, and activities are reasonable alternatives or complements—particularly when the AI feature does not add clear value for the child.
