Its wider ecosystem adds reusable components, development tools, testing workflows, and platform-specific packaging—but shared code does not eliminate each platform’s build, provisioning, testing, or distribution requirements.
What the .NET MAUI ecosystem includes
.NET MAUI is a .NET framework for building native cross-platform mobile and desktop applications. Microsoft’s overview describes a common C# codebase and project system for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Microsoft’s .NET MAUI overview also points to packages and components that extend what a project can use.

In practice, the ecosystem is broader than the framework itself: it includes reusable NuGet packages, IDE and build workflows, testing options, and different ways to package and deliver an app for each operating system. A shared project helps organize code and configuration; it does not make platform capabilities or release processes interchangeable.
Reusable components and packages
.NET MAUI Community Toolkit
The free, open-source .NET MAUI Community Toolkit provides reusable animations, behaviors, converters, effects, and helper features, distributed as NuGet packages. Teams can add these capabilities rather than building every common interaction from scratch. The toolkit documentation lists these minimum platform versions, last updated March 20, 2025; check the current documentation when selecting a target because support requirements can change.
#1 Best Overall
| Platform | Minimum version listed |
|---|---|
| Android | Android 5.0 / API 21 |
| iOS | iOS 15 |
| macOS via Mac Catalyst | macOS 12, using Mac Catalyst 15 |
| Windows | Windows 10 version 1809 or later, and Windows 11 using WinUI 3 |
| Tizen | Tizen 7 or later |
See the .NET MAUI Community Toolkit documentation for package guidance and current compatibility information.
When to look beyond the toolkit
Microsoft’s overview also names Syncfusion as a package example. That makes it one vendor to investigate, not a recommendation or a guarantee about current product features or licensing. Evaluate any third-party component against the actual controls your app needs, its licensing, accessibility, platform coverage, support, and maintenance. If the toolkit already covers the requirement, adding another dependency may not be worthwhile.

Development and testing are still platform-specific
MAUI’s single-project system helps manage shared configuration and packaging, but each target still has distinct build and validation needs. Microsoft’s deployment and testing guide covers unit testing, UI automation with Appium, performance considerations, and trimming with ILLink. Those tools complement—not replace—testing on the operating systems and devices that matter to your users.
Android
An Android emulator lets developers simulate device configurations and iterate quickly. A physical Android device is also useful for finding behavior that may depend on real hardware or a particular device configuration. Android packages differ by destination: APK is used for installation, while AAB is used for store publication.
Rank #3
iOS
iOS builds require Apple’s build tools on a Mac. Visual Studio running on Windows can connect to a network-accessible Mac through Pair to Mac, but that connection does not remove the Mac build-host requirement. Test with both a simulator and a physical iOS device when appropriate; physical-device testing requires provisioning. The documented distribution artifact is an IPA archive with a provisioning profile.
Microsoft’s deployment guide details the build-host workflow and platform-specific deployment requirements.
Rank #4
Mac Catalyst
Mac Catalyst has its own provisioning and delivery considerations. Distribution can use an app bundle or a pkg installer, so choose a route based on how users will receive the app and the requirements of the release.

Windows
Windows apps can be tested locally after enabling Developer Mode. Distribution options include folder deployment and MSIX packaging. These are distinct routes, not interchangeable labels for the same release artifact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a workflow based on release needs
There is no single workflow that is best for every MAUI team. Use the project’s target operating systems, minimum versions, build-host access, provisioning needs, and distribution route to decide what to validate and how to ship.
- Emulator or simulator versus physical device: virtual devices support repeatable configurations and fast iteration; physical devices help expose real hardware and device-specific behavior.
- Build-host availability: confirm access to the required platform tools, including a Mac for iOS builds.
- Provisioning: account for provisioning where required, particularly for physical iOS testing and relevant Apple-platform distribution.
- Artifact and destination: select the package format that matches installation, store submission, or deployment needs.
- Dependencies: add third-party controls only when their concrete capabilities justify the cost, licensing terms, and maintenance burden.
| Target | Testing or setup detail | Documented distribution route |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Emulator and physical-device testing | APK for installation; AAB for store publication |
| iOS | Mac build tools; physical-device testing requires provisioning | IPA archive and provisioning profile |
| Mac Catalyst | Platform-specific build and provisioning workflow | App bundle or pkg installer |
| Windows | Local testing after enabling Developer Mode | Folder deployment or MSIX |
The exact toolchain and platform support can change. Use Microsoft’s deployment documentation for current build and packaging steps, and verify package requirements against their maintained documentation.
