A Docker healthcheck, a KPI endpoint, and a “Próxima acción” (“Next action”) strip solve different problems in a Vite/React and NestJS monorepo. In Roberto Luna’s August 28, 2026 DEV Community post, the reported CI fix was to change the API probe from localhost to the Compose service name api. That may test a useful network path, but it is not a universal replacement: choose the probe address according to whether you want to test the container locally or reach the service over the Compose network.
What the reported change does—and what it does not prove
Luna’s post describes three related pieces of work: a Docker Compose healthcheck for a NestJS API, a condo KPI endpoint, and a shared priority-action strip intended for three portals. The post characterizes the strip as “real-time,” but the displayed material does not establish streaming updates, and its React component excerpt ends before a complete working component is shown. Treat the code and fix as the author’s project report, not as an independently reproduced result.

The distinction matters because a healthcheck, a dashboard endpoint, and a user-facing action strip measure or present different things. A passing HTTP probe says something about a chosen endpoint at a chosen address. It does not, by itself, prove that the database is ready, that KPI figures are correct, or that a user is authorized to see particular actions.
Why the localhost probe reportedly failed
The post says a CI probe to http://localhost:3001/health resolved to IPv6 loopback, [::1], and returned 404, even though the NestJS API listened on 0.0.0.0. The author reports trying 127.0.0.1 and a curl variant without success in that setup, then changing the probe to http://api:3001/health with wget. The reported settings were a 30-second interval, 5-second timeout, and three retries. These are details of that project’s report; they should not be read as evidence that Docker always resolves localhost to IPv6 or that this exact change will fix another stack.

Choose the target based on the question
- Container-local check: A loopback address probes the API from inside its own container. This is appropriate when the goal is to know whether the local process can answer a request. The address and listener configuration must agree in the actual container environment.
- Compose-network check: A Compose service name such as
apiprobes through service discovery and the container network. This can confirm that the API is reachable by that route, but adds network-path and name-resolution behavior to what the probe tests.
So, use the service name when service-to-service reachability is part of the desired signal; use a local target when the intended signal is local process responsiveness. How Compose uses a healthcheck
A healthcheck periodically runs a command and updates a container’s health status. Docker Compose can use that status to control dependent-service startup: when a dependency is configured with condition: service_healthy, Compose waits for its healthcheck to pass before starting the dependent service. Compose exposes settings including interval, timeout, retries, and start period; the values need to match the application’s startup and recovery behavior. Docker Compose startup order documentation.

A useful implementation check is to verify the exact command, target hostname, port, path, and installed probe utility inside the image. Then inspect the container’s health status and logs when the check fails. A failure can indicate a bad address, a missing executable, an endpoint returning an unexpected status, or an application that has not reached the expected state—not just an API crash.
Define what “healthy” means for the NestJS API
An endpoint that returns successfully can establish that an HTTP handler is responding. It does not necessarily establish that the service can perform its essential work. NestJS Terminus describes health checks as summaries of health indicators, including indicators for databases and external services. Add dependency checks only when those dependencies are part of the service’s readiness requirements, and decide whether an unavailable dependency should make the API unhealthy or merely degraded. NestJS deployment guidance makes a related distinction: health checks and logs help indicate whether an application is up, while observability helps identify route latency, slow classes, and errors. A health endpoint is not a telemetry dashboard. NestJS deployment documentation.
What the KPI endpoint reports
The post’s excerpt describes a GET /complex/kpis endpoint that calls getIncomePaid() and getExpensePaid() concurrently and returns balance, incomePaid, and expensePaid. It also says the controller was registered in AppModule. However, the same post earlier names the route /condos/kpis, while the displayed controller decorator and method imply /complex/kpis. It also describes rounding the balance and later says the calculation has no rounding side-effects. Those inconsistencies cannot be resolved from the excerpt; check the repository’s actual controller and calculation before adopting either route or rounding behavior.

For a maintainable contract, choose one route that reflects the resource and keep the response fields and numeric semantics explicit. Document whether amounts are stored and returned in major or minor currency units, how rounding is applied, and whether the totals include only paid transactions. As the rules grow, moving aggregation and business logic into a service can keep the controller focused on HTTP concerns; that is implementation guidance, not a feature the post says it completed.

The shown NestJS controller exposes GET /priority-actions and returns an in-memory mock array. Each example object has id, title, dueDate, and isStale. The example returns all mock actions when the query parameter is role=admin; for other roles, it excludes stale items. The post says no database table is used for this mock.

This is a demonstration of response shape and filtering, not production access control. A client-supplied ?role=admin parameter is not trustworthy authorization. Derive roles from an authenticated identity or session and enforce access on the server. The post’s commenter Kane Lim also recommends ordering actions by priority or due date and keeping the API contract stable. Decide and document the sort order rather than relying on the incidental order of an array.
Putting the frontend and backend together
The intended product flow is straightforward: the condos homepage requests KPI totals, while a shared strip requests the next recommended task for a portal. The available React excerpt is truncated during state setup, so it does not provide enough to claim a complete component implementation or specify loading, error, refresh, or cross-portal behavior.
For the Vite frontend in Docker, Docker’s React guide shows configuring server.host: true, a fixed port, and strictPort: true. The host setting exposes the development server outside the container; strict port behavior makes a port conflict fail instead of silently moving the server to another port. Practical validation checklist
- Decide whether the healthcheck is meant to test local API responsiveness or service-network reachability, and set its target accordingly.
- Confirm that the healthcheck command exists in the API image and that the configured endpoint returns the expected response from the same network context as the probe.
- If another Compose service must wait for the API, use a dependency condition of
service_healthyand choose timing values based on real startup behavior. - Choose and verify one KPI route; check the paid-income and paid-expense definitions and rounding rules against the actual implementation.
- Treat mock priority actions and query-parameter role filtering as examples only; derive production permissions from authenticated identity and define a stable sort rule.
- Keep health status distinct from observability: use telemetry and logs to diagnose latency and errors rather than expecting a basic health response to explain them.
