Test the same Wi-Fi connection on another device, note the Nest app or device error, and then follow troubleshooting steps for the specific product. Start with reversible actions; a factory reset can erase settings or video history.
First, find out how much of your home is affected
If several Nest products are offline, check for a power outage and test internet access on another device connected to the same Wi-Fi. On a phone, turn off cellular data during the test so it does not silently use mobile internet. Google recommends restarting the router when multiple Nest products are offline.

- The other device also cannot reach the internet: The problem may be with your internet connection. Contact your internet service provider if restarting the network equipment does not restore access.
- The other device can reach the internet: Focus next on the router’s settings or compatibility, the Nest service status, and then individual devices.
Google says Nest products periodically try to reconnect automatically. That does not identify the cause or replace troubleshooting when a device remains offline. See Google’s Wi-Fi and connection troubleshooting guide.
Check the app, message, and connection before changing settings
Update the Google Home or Nest app and read any error message or help code shown in the app or on the device. The distinction matters: a thermostat that has Wi-Fi but will not connect to an account has a different problem from one that cannot reach the network.

- The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory
- Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home. Lock feature: No
- Programmable thermostat that lets you create an energy efficient schedule in the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone

For setup or pairing, confirm the phone is connected to the intended Wi-Fi and that Bluetooth and local-network permissions are enabled as required by the setup flow. Move the phone and Nest device closer to the router while pairing. Restarting the modem or router and the affected Nest device is a reasonable low-risk first step. Use the instructions for the exact device and error rather than applying one product’s pairing steps to another.
Google’s pairing troubleshooting guide includes a charge check for thermostat pairing: the thermostat should have at least 3.8 V. This is a product-specific requirement, not a general fix for all Nest devices.

If a Nest thermostat is offline or will not connect
- Check whether another device on the same Wi-Fi can access the internet.
- Restart the router and any Wi-Fi extenders or repeaters.
- Restart the thermostat, then try reconnecting it to Wi-Fi.
- If it remains offline, reset the thermostat’s network connection and reconnect it to the app using the steps for your model.
If the thermostat connects to Wi-Fi but will not add to your account, use Google’s separate instructions for connecting a Nest thermostat to the app. For an offline thermostat, see Google’s thermostat troubleshooting sequence.
If a Nest camera or doorbell lost its connection
Try a restart before considering a factory reset. Restarting preserves settings and is intended to let the device reconnect to the same Wi-Fi. A factory reset is different: it erases personalized settings and the entire video history, does not reconnect the device automatically, and requires setup again. Save any clips you need before removing or resetting the device.

If the Wi-Fi name or password changed, Google says camera and doorbell network details cannot be updated in the Home app. A factory reset and setup again may be necessary. Check the exact model’s instructions before proceeding, and see Google’s guides for restarting or resetting a camera or doorbell and changing its Wi-Fi network.
If a Nest speaker or display is not responding
Check its connection and try troubleshooting and rebooting before a factory reset. A factory reset clears device data, cannot be undone, and disconnects the device from home members. Follow the instructions for the specific speaker or display model in Google’s factory-reset guide only if less destructive steps have not worked.

When a factory reset is—and is not—the next step
A reset is not a general-purpose first fix for an offline Nest device. Restarting a device or network connection is less destructive; factory-reset consequences vary by product. For cameras and doorbells, reset deletes video history and requires setup again. For speakers and displays, it clears device data and is irreversible. Confirm the model-specific steps and preserve anything you need before proceeding.
