Get Claude to Answer Directly: Use Clear Instructions and Delimiters

A clear instruction can encourage Claude to answer directly. Use delimiters to distinguish your request from background, and specify when a follow-up is genuinely necessary.

To encourage Claude to answer without an unnecessary follow-up, state that preference explicitly and tell it what to do when information is missing. Delimiters such as XML-style tags can separate your instructions, background and question, but the tags alone do not guarantee a direct answer.

How to prompt Claude for a direct answer

Try this template, replacing the bracketed text with your own context and question:

<instructions>
Answer the request directly and concisely. Ask a follow-up question only if a missing detail is essential to give a useful answer. If it is not essential, state a reasonable assumption and proceed.
</instructions>

<context>
[Add only background that helps answer the request.]
</context>

<input>
[Ask the question here.]
</input>

The tags mark which parts are instructions, background and the actual request. The behavior you want comes from the words inside the <instructions> tag—not from the delimiters by themselves. Change the tag names if you like, but keep them descriptive and use them consistently.

Why the structure can help

Anthropic’s official Prompting best practices recommends clear, direct instructions and specificity about the desired output. It says XML tags can help Claude parse complex prompts unambiguously, particularly when they combine instructions, context, examples and variable inputs. Its examples include <instructions>, <context> and <input>.

This is most useful when a prompt contains several kinds of information that could otherwise be confused. For a simple question with no extra context, a short, explicit instruction may be enough; Anthropic’s guidance does not establish that tags are necessary for every prompt.

What to expect—and what not to assume

The template gives Claude a preference: proceed when a reasonable assumption will do, and ask only when a missing detail is essential. It does not ensure Claude will never ask a question. Anthropic’s guidance supports the broader principles of clear instructions and structured prompts, but does not report a measured reduction in follow-up questions or validate this exact template.
