Choose Nest if you want to manage a compatible indoor chime, temporarily quiet indoor alerts, or use Google speaker and display announcements. Choose Ring if you want separate app alert sounds for doorbell presses and motion, with optional Ring Chime devices adding another indoor sounder. The important distinction is where the sound plays: at the doorbell, on a phone, through an existing wired chime, or on a connected speaker or plug-in chime. Which options work depends on the doorbell model and installation.

What sound are you trying to change?
A “doorbell sound” can mean several different things. The sound played by the doorbell itself is not the same control as a phone notification, the home’s wired chime, a Ring plug-in Chime, or an announcement from a smart speaker. Before changing a setting—or buying an accessory—identify which endpoint you want to hear and check that your exact doorbell model supports it.

- At the door: the sound heard near the doorbell. Google seasonal themes, when available and enabled, can affect this sound.
- On a phone: an app notification. Ring documents separate app tones for button presses and motion; Google’s referenced help covers phone notifications separately from indoor chime controls.
- Inside the home: an existing wired chime, a compatible speaker or display, or a plug-in chime accessory.
How Nest handles chimes, themes and quieting
Adjusting a Nest indoor chime
In the Google Home app, open the doorbell’s tile and settings, then look under the doorbell controls for audio or chime options. For supported wired Nest doorbells, Google documents a setting to adjust how long a digital chime rings. An indoor-chime on/off control is separate from the temporary Quiet Time feature. Menu names and setup paths can differ by device generation; some older devices or configurations may use the Nest app. See Google’s audio-settings instructions for the applicable setup.

Using Quiet Time
Open the doorbell’s controls in Google Home and choose Quiet Time to select a duration; you can end it early. During Quiet Time, the visitor still triggers the normal sound outside, while the indoor chime and speaker or display visitor announcements are silenced. Google says the app may still send a visitor notification, so Quiet Time should not be treated as a promise that your phone will be silent.
Seasonal doorbell themes and Google announcements
Google says seasonal themes may appear around some holidays. When a theme is enabled, it plays at the doorbell and, if visitor announcements are configured, in the home; after the holiday, the theme disappears from the app and the doorbell returns to its default tone. Availability is time- and potentially region-dependent, so check the app rather than assuming a particular theme is offered now. Google’s doorbell settings guidance describes the feature.

To hear visitor announcements, a compatible Google speaker or display must be set up in the same Home as the doorbell. Google explains visitor-announcement behavior.

Choosing different app alert tones
In the Ring app, open the doorbell’s Alert Settings and App Alert Tones controls. Ring’s instructions let you choose one sound for doorbell rings and another for motion alerts. Setting up a Ring Chime or Chime Pro
A Ring Chime-family device is an optional indoor sounder, not a requirement for every Ring doorbell. In the Ring app, link the Chime or Chime Pro to the doorbell, choose whether it should respond to Rings or Motion Detected, preview a tone, and save the selection. Supported Chime devices also offer snoozing for Chime alerts. Confirm compatibility for the specific doorbell and Chime generation before buying. Ring’s Chime setup guidance covers linking and tone controls.
Will the doorbell ring your existing chime?
That depends on the model and wiring, not just the brand. Google’s digital-chime controls require a supported wired Nest doorbell; battery-powered Nest models cannot use a digital chime. For wire-free Nest installations, Google recommends a compatible speaker or display for indoor visitor announcements.
Ring’s support information says existing in-home chime support varies by model and identifies doorbells that do not support one. Depending on the model, alternatives may include Ring Chime, Chime Pro, or a compatible Alexa Echo. Check Ring’s current in-home chime guidance for your exact device and region before relying on the wired chime.
Quick Recap
Which one is better for your sound preferences?
- Pick Nest for temporary quieting of indoor alerts. Its Quiet Time control covers the indoor chime and visitor announcements, with phone notifications handled separately.
- Pick Ring if event-specific app tones matter most. Ring documents separate phone sounds for a button press and motion detection; compatible Ring Chime devices can also distinguish those events indoors.
- For a battery-powered installation, check the indoor alert route first. Nest battery models cannot use a digital wired chime, while Ring’s existing-chime support is model-dependent. Verify the exact device and consider compatible smart-speaker or dedicated Chime alternatives only where supported.
- Do not compare seasonal themes directly with alert-tone selectors. Nest’s seasonal sounds are temporary doorbell themes; Ring’s documented controls are selectable event alerts in the app and on supported Chime devices.
