You generally cannot selectively block a neighbor’s Wi-Fi, and using a jammer is not a safe or lawful fix in the United States. If your connection is slow or unreliable, first check whether the cause is weak coverage, crowded Wi-Fi channels, nearby electronics, or an internet-service problem. Then improve your own network by testing different locations and bands, adjusting router placement or channel, and securing your Wi-Fi separately.
Can you block a neighbor’s Wi-Fi signal?
Not selectively with ordinary home-router settings. Your router can manage your own network, but it cannot stop another access point’s radio transmissions from reaching your home. A neighbor’s Wi-Fi may add congestion, particularly on a busy channel, but a weak or erratic connection can also come from distance, walls, poor router placement, nearby electronics, or a problem with your internet service.

Do not use, buy, or sell a Wi-Fi jammer. In the United States, GPS.gov says federal law prohibits jamming equipment that interferes with authorized radio communications and that there is no residential-use exemption. The FCC’s 2015 order also discusses enforcement warnings against intentional Wi-Fi interference, including the advisory titled “Warning: Wi-Fi Blocking is Prohibited”. These are US federal sources; they are not a survey of every country’s laws.
How to diagnose and improve your connection
Change one thing at a time and repeat the same checks afterward. That makes it easier to tell whether the adjustment helped rather than guessing that a neighbor’s network is responsible.
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
- Record a baseline. Test your connection in several rooms and at the locations where you normally use it. Note where performance is poor before changing router settings.
- Check distance and obstructions. Try moving the device closer to the router. Place the router in a central, elevated, open location rather than behind furniture or among major obstacles. Microsoft recommends comparing performance in multiple locations before and after changes.
- Look for nearby interference sources. Keep the router away from potential sources such as microwaves, power cables, fluorescent lights, wireless video cameras, and cordless phones. Apple also advises checking for sources of wireless interference in its Wi-Fi interference guidance.
- Compare available Wi-Fi bands. If both your router and device support them, test 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; try 6 GHz only if both support it. The best choice depends on the distance, obstacles, compatibility, congestion, and measured performance where you use the connection.
- Inspect channel use. A Wi-Fi analyzer can show nearby access points and signal strength. On 2.4 GHz, compare channels 1, 6, and 11, which Microsoft identifies as non-overlapping choices. On 5 GHz, look for a channel with fewer nearby access points at relevant signal strengths. Router channel availability varies, and automatic channel selection may help but is not guaranteed to choose best for every home.
- Consider a coverage extender only for a coverage problem. If the router cannot be moved and your own signal is weak in a particular area, an extender may help extend coverage. It does not block a neighbor’s network.
- Rule out service or equipment trouble. If changes to placement and channels do not help, troubleshoot the router and devices and contact your internet or wireless provider.
Which Wi-Fi band should you try?
These are general tradeoffs, not a promise of a particular speed or range in your home. Router and device support also determine which bands you can use. Microsoft summarizes the differences in its Wi-Fi connection guidance.
| Band | Range and obstacles | Throughput and congestion | When to try it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Generally reaches farther and passes through obstacles better. | Generally slower, with fewer non-overlapping channel choices. | When range, wall penetration, or compatibility matter more than peak throughput. |
| 5 GHz | Generally shorter range and weaker wall penetration than 2.4 GHz. | Can offer faster throughput and may be less congested. | When your device is relatively close to the router and needs more throughput. |
| 6 GHz | Generally shorter range; use depends on compatible router and client devices. | Can be fast and less congested nearby. | When both devices support it and you use the connection relatively close to the router. |
How to choose a less congested channel
Channel congestion is only one possible cause of poor Wi-Fi. Use an analyzer if available to check nearby access points, and compare signal strength where the connection matters. Microsoft recommends channels 1, 6, and 11 as the non-overlapping choices for 2.4 GHz; for 5 GHz, select a channel with fewer access points for the signal strength. The choices shown in your router may differ by model and local availability.

Router menus vary, so use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact controls. If you see an automatic channel-selection option, you can try it, then repeat your baseline tests in the same locations. Keep the change only if it improves your actual connection.
Secure your Wi-Fi separately
Network security controls who can connect to your network; it does not block nearby radio signals or reduce interference. The FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, setting unique Wi-Fi and router administrator passwords, and keeping router software current. See the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance for details.

When to report suspected jamming
Do not assume that a slow connection proves deliberate interference. GPS.gov advises checking with your provider and troubleshooting ordinary equipment and connectivity issues first. If those problems have been ruled out and you have reason to suspect deliberate jamming, GPS.gov says you can submit a complaint to the FCC through its jamming guidance.
